Ministry of the Twelve

11NowG1161 He calledG4779 the twelveG1427 togetherG4779 and gaveG1325 them powerG1411 and authorityG1849 overG1909 allG3956 the demonsG1140, and the power to healG2323 diseasesG3554. 2And He sentG649 them outG649 to 2proclaimG2784 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316 and to performG2390 healingG2390. 3And He saidG3004 to them, “3TakeG142 nothingG3367 for your journeyG3598, 4neitherG3383 a staffG4464, norG3383 a 5bagG4082, norG3383 breadG740, norG3383 moneyG694; and do not even haveG2192 twoG1417 6tunicsG5509. 4And whateverG3739 houseG3614 you enterG1525, stayG3306 thereG1563 7untilG2532 you leaveG1831 that cityG1564. 5And as for allG3745 whoG3745 do not receiveG1209 you, when you leaveG1831 that cityG4172, 8shakeG660 the dustG2868 offG660 your feetG4228 as a testimonyG3142 againstG1909 them.” 6And as they were leavingG1831, they began goingG1330 9throughoutG1330 the villagesG2968, 10preachingG2097 the gospelG2097 and healingG2323 everywhereG3837.

711NowG1161 12HerodG2264 the tetrarchG5068 heardG191 about allG3956 that was happeningG1096; and he was greatlyG1280 perplexedG1280, becauseG1223 it was saidG3004 by someG5100 that 13JohnG2491 had risenG1453 from the deadG3498, 8and by someG5100 that 14ElijahG2243 had appearedG5316, and by othersG243 that oneG5100 of the prophetsG4396 of oldG744 had risenG450. 9HerodG2264 saidG3004, “I myselfG1473 had JohnG2491 beheadedG607; but whoG5101 is thisG3778 ManG3778 aboutG4012 whomG3739 I hearG191 suchG5108 thingsG5108?” And 15he kept tryingG2212 to seeG3708 Him.

1016When the apostlesG652 returnedG5290, they gaveG1334 anG1334 accountG1334 to Him of allG3745 thatG3745 they had doneG4160. 17And takingG3880 them with Him, He withdrewG5298 privatelyG2398 to a cityG4172 calledG2564 18BethsaidaG966. 11But the crowdsG3793 were awareG1097 of this and followedG190 Him; and He welcomedG588 them and began speakingG2980 to them aboutG4012 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316, and curingG2390 thoseG3588 who hadG2192 needG5532 of healingG2322.

Five Thousand Men Fed

12NowG1161 the dayG2250 19was endingG2827, and the twelveG1427 cameG4334 upG4334 and saidG3004 to Him, “DismissG630 the crowdG3793, soG2443 thatG2443 they may goG4198 into the surroundingG2945 villagesG2968 and countrysideG68 and findG2647 lodgingG2647 and getG2147 20somethingG1979 toG1979 eatG1979; becauseG3754 hereG5602, we are in a secludedG2048 placeG5117.” 13But He saidG3004 to them, “You giveG1325 them something to eatG2068!” But they saidG3004, “We have noG3756 moreG4183 thanG2228 fiveG4002 loavesG740 and twoG1417 fishG2486, unlessG1487G3385 perhapsG3385 we goG4198 and buyG59 foodG1033 for allG3956 theseG3778 peopleG2992.” 14(For there were aboutG5616 fiveG4000 thousandG4000 menG435.) But He saidG3004 to His disciplesG3101, “Have them reclineG2625 to eat 21in groupsG2828 of aboutG5616 fiftyG4004 eachG303.” 15They didG4160 soG3779, and had them allG537 reclineG2625. 16And He tookG2983 the fiveG4002 loavesG740 and the twoG1417 fishG2486, and, lookingG308 upG308 to heavenG3772, He blessedG2127 them and brokeG2622 them, and gaveG1325 them to the disciplesG3101 again and again, to serveG3908 the crowdG3793. 17And they allG3956 ateG2068 and were satisfiedG5526; and 22the brokenG2801 piecesG2801 which they had leftG4052 overG4052 were pickedG142 upG142, twelveG1427 23basketsG2894 full.

Peter Says Jesus Is The Christ

1824And it happenedG1096 that whileG1722 He was 25prayingG4336 aloneG3441, the disciplesG3101 were with Him, and He questionedG1905 them, sayingG3004, “WhoG5101 do the 26peopleG3793 sayG3004 that I amG1510?” 19They answeredG611 and saidG3004, “JohnG2491 the BaptistG910, and othersG243 say ElijahG2243; but othersG243, that oneG5100 of the prophetsG4396 of oldG744 has risenG450.” 20And He saidG3004 to them, “But whoG5101 do you sayG3004 that I amG1510?” And PeterG4074 answeredG611 and saidG3004, “27The 28ChristG5547 of GodG2316.” 21But He 2930warnedG2008 them and instructedG3853 them not to tellG3004 thisG3778 to anyoneG3367, 2231sayingG3004, “32The SonG5207 of ManG444 mustG1163 sufferG3958 manyG4183 thingsG4183 and be rejectedG593 by the eldersG4245 and chiefG749 priestsG749 and scribesG1122, and be killedG615 and be raisedG1453 on the thirdG5154 dayG2250.”

23And He was sayingG3004 to them allG3956, “33IfG1487 anyoneG5100 wantsG2309 to comeG2064 afterG3694 Me, he must denyG720 himselfG1438, takeG142 upG142 his crossG4716 dailyG2596G2250, and followG190 Me. 24For 34whoeverG3739G1437 wantsG2309 to saveG4982 his 35lifeG5590 will loseG622 it, but whoeverG3739G302 losesG622 his 36lifeG5590 for My sakeG1752, thisG3778 is the one who will saveG4982 it. 25For whatG5101 goodG5623 does it doG5623 a personG444 if he gainsG2770 the wholeG3650 worldG2889, but 37losesG622 orG2228 forfeitsG2210 himselfG1438? 2638For whoeverG3739G302 isG1870 ashamedG1870 of Me and My wordsG3056, the SonG5207 of ManG444 will beG1870 ashamedG1870 of him whenG3752 He comesG2064 in His gloryG1391 and the glory of the FatherG3962 and the holyG40 angelsG32. 27But I sayG3004 to you truthfullyG230, 39there are someG5100 of thoseG3588 standingG2476 hereG847 whoG3739 will not tasteG1089 deathG2288 untilG2193 they seeG3708 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316.”

The Transfiguration

2840AboutG5616 eightG3638 daysG2250 afterG3326 theseG3778 sayingsG3056, He tookG3880 alongG3880 41PeterG4074, JohnG2491, and JamesG2385, and 42wentG305 upG305 on the mountainG3735 43to prayG4336. 29And whileG1722 He was 44prayingG4336, the appearanceG1491 of His faceG4383 45becameG1096 differentG2087, and His clothingG2441 became whiteG3022 and 46gleamingG1823. 30And beholdG2400, twoG1417 menG435 were talkingG4814 with Him; and they were MosesG3475 and ElijahG2243, 31whoG3739, appearingG3708 in 47gloryG1391, were speakingG3004 of His 48departureG1841, whichG3739 He wasG3195 aboutG3195 toG3195 accomplishG4137 at JerusalemG2419. 32NowG1161 PeterG4074 and his companionsG3588G4862 49had beenG1510 overcomeG916 with sleepG5258; but when they were fullyG1235 awakeG1235, they sawG3708 His gloryG1391 and the twoG1417 menG435 who were standingG4921 with Him. 33And as 50theseG846 two men were leavingG1316 Him, PeterG4074 saidG3004 to JesusG2424, “51MasterG1988, it is goodG2570 that we are hereG5602; and 52let’s makeG4160 threeG5140 53tabernaclesG4633: oneG1520 for You, oneG1520 for MosesG3475, and oneG1520 for ElijahG2243”--54not realizingG3609 whatG3739 he was sayingG3004. 34But while he was sayingG3004 thisG3778, a cloudG3507 55formedG1096 and began to overshadowG1982 them; and they wereG5399 afraidG5399 as they enteredG1525 the cloudG3507. 35And then 56a voiceG5456 cameG1096 from the cloudG3507, sayingG3004, “57ThisG3778 is My SonG5207, My ChosenG1586 One; listenG191 to Him!” 36And whenG1722 the voiceG5456 58had spokenG1096, JesusG2424 was foundG2147 aloneG3441. And 59they keptG4601 silentG4601, and reportedG518 to noG3762 oneG3762 in thoseG1565 daysG2250 anyG3762 of the things whichG3739 they had seenG3708.

3760On the nextG1836 dayG2250, when they cameG2718 downG2718 from the mountainG3735, a largeG4183 crowdG3793 metG4876 Him. 38And a manG435 from the crowdG3793 shoutedG994, sayingG3004, “TeacherG1320, I begG1189 You to lookG1914 at my sonG5207, becauseG3754 he is my onlyG3439 son, 39and a spiritG4151 seizesG2983 him and he suddenlyG1810 screamsG2896, and it throwsG4682 him intoG4682 a convulsionG4682 with foamingG876 at the mouth; and onlyG3433 withG3433 difficultyG3433 does it leaveG672 him, maulingG4937 him as it leavesG672. 40And I beggedG1189 Your disciplesG3101 to castG1544 it outG1544, and they couldG1410 not.” 41And JesusG2424 answeredG611 and saidG3004, “YouG5599 unbelievingG571 and perverseG1294 generationG1074, howG2193 longG2193G4219 shall I be with you and putG430 upG430 with you? BringG4317 your sonG5207 hereG5602.” 42NowG1161 while he was stillG2089 approachingG4334, the demonG1140 slammedG4486 him toG4486 theG4486 groundG4486 and threwG4952 him intoG4952 aG4952 convulsionG4952. But JesusG2424 rebukedG2008 the uncleanG169 spiritG4151, and healedG2390 the boyG3816 and gaveG591 him backG591 to his fatherG3962. 43And they were allG3956 amazedG1605 at the 6162greatnessG3168 of GodG2316.

63But while everyoneG3956 wasG2296 astonishedG2296 at allG3956 that He was doingG4160, He saidG3004 to His disciplesG3101, 44“As for you, let theseG3778 wordsG3056 sinkG5087 into your earsG3775: 64for the SonG5207 of ManG444 isG3195 goingG3195 toG3195 be 65handedG3860G5495 overG3860 to menG444.” 45But 66they 67did not understandG50 thisG3778 statementG4487, and it was concealedG3871 from them soG2443 thatG2443 they would not comprehendG143 it; and they wereG5399 afraidG5399 to askG2065 Him aboutG4012 thisG3778 statementG4487.

The Test of Greatness

4668NowG1161 an argumentG1261 69startedG1525 amongG1722 them as to whichG5101 of them might be the greatestG3173. 47But JesusG2424, 70knowingG3609 71whatG1261 they were thinkingG1261 in their heartsG2588, tookG1949 a childG3813 and had him standG2476 by His sideG3844, 48and He saidG3004 to them, “72WhoeverG3739G1437 receivesG1209 thisG3778 childG3813 in My nameG3686 receivesG1209 Me, and whoeverG3739G302 receivesG1209 Me receivesG1209 Him who sentG649 Me; 73for the oneG3588 who is leastG3398 amongG1722 allG3956 of you, thisG3778 is the one who is greatG3173.”

4974JohnG2491 answeredG611 and saidG3004, “75MasterG1988, we sawG3708 someoneG5100 castingG1544 outG1544 demonsG1140 in Your nameG3686; and we tried to preventG2967 him, becauseG3754 he does not followG190 alongG190 withG190 us.” 50But JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “Do not hinderG2967 him; 76for the one whoG3739 is not againstG2596 you is 77for you.”

51WhenG1722 the daysG2250 were approachingG4845 for 78His 79ascensionG354, He 80was determinedG4741 81to goG4198 to JerusalemG2419; 52and He sentG649 messengersG32 on aheadG4253G4383 of Him, and they wentG4198 and enteredG1525 a villageG2968 of the 82SamaritansG4541 to 83makeG2090 arrangementsG2090 for Him. 53And they did not receiveG1209 Him, 84becauseG3754 85He was travelingG4198 towardG1519 JerusalemG2419. 54When His disciplesG3101 86JamesG2385 and JohnG2491 sawG3708 this, they saidG3004, “LordG2962, do You wantG2309 us to 87commandG3004 fireG4442 to comeG2597 downG2597 from heavenG3772 and consumeG355 them?” 55But He turnedG4762 and rebukedG2008 them.88 56And they wentG4198 on to anotherG2087 villageG2968.

Exacting Discipleship

5789As they were goingG4198 on the roadG3598, 90someoneG5100 saidG3004 to Him, “I will followG190 You whereverG3699G1437 You goG565.” 58And JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “The foxesG258 haveG2192 holesG5454 and the birdsG4071 of the skyG3772 have nestsG2682, but 91the SonG5207 of ManG444 hasG2192 nowhereG3756G4226 to layG2827 His headG2776.” 59And He saidG3004 to anotherG2087, “92FollowG190 Me.” But he saidG3004, “LordG2962, permitG2010 me firstG4413 to goG565 and buryG2290 my fatherG3962.” 60But He saidG3004 to him, “AllowG863 the deadG3498 to buryG2290 their ownG1438 deadG3498; but as for you, goG565 and 93proclaimG1229 everywhereG1229 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316.” 61AnotherG2087 alsoG2532 saidG3004, “I will followG190 You, LordG2962; but 94firstG4413 permitG2010 me to sayG657 goodbyeG657 to thoseG3588 at my homeG3624.” 62But JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “95NoG3762 oneG3762, after puttingG1911 his handG5495 to the plowG723 and lookingG991 backG3694, is fitG2111 for the kingdomG932 of GodG2316.”
