Jesus before Pilate
1ThenG2532 the entireG537 assemblyG4128 of them setG450 outG450 and 1broughtG71 Him beforeG1909 PilateG4091. 22And they beganG757 to bringG2723 chargesG2723 againstG2723 Him, sayingG3004, “We foundG2147 thisG3778 ManG3778 3misleadingG1294 our nationG1484 and 4forbiddingG2967 us to payG1325 taxesG5411 to CaesarG2541, and sayingG3004 that He HimselfG1438 is 5ChristG5547, a KingG935.” 3NowG1161 PilateG4091 askedG2065 Him, sayingG3004, “So You are the KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” And He answeredG611 him and saidG5346, “6It is as you sayG3004.” 4But PilateG4091 saidG3004 to the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the crowdsG3793, “7I findG2147 noG3762 groundsG159 forG159 chargesG159 in the case of thisG3778 ManG444.” 5But they kept on insistingG2001, sayingG3004, “He is stirringG383 upG383 the peopleG2992, teachingG1321 allG3650 overG2596 JudeaG2449, 8startingG757 from GalileeG1056, asG2193 farG2193 asG2193 thisG5602 placeG5602!”
6NowG1161 when PilateG4091 heardG191 this, he askedG1905 whetherG1487 the ManG444 was a GalileanG1057. 7And when he learnedG1921 that He belongedG1510G1537 to Herod’sG2264 jurisdictionG1849, he sentG375 Him to 9HerodG2264, 10since he alsoG2532 was in JerusalemG2414 11at thisG3778 timeG2250.
Jesus before Herod
8NowG1161 HerodG2264 was overjoyedG3029G5463 when he sawG3708 JesusG2424; for 12he hadG1510 wantedG2309 to seeG3708 Him for a longG2425 timeG5550, becauseG1223 he had been hearingG191 aboutG4012 Him and was hopingG1679 to seeG3708 someG5100 13signG4592 performedG1096 by Him. 9And he questionedG1905 Him 14at someG2425 lengthG3056G2425; but 15He offeredG611 him noG3762 answerG611 atG3762 allG3762. 10Now the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the scribesG1122 stoodG2476 there, vehementlyG2159 chargingG2723 Him. 11And HerodG2264, togetherG4862 with his soldiersG4753, treatedG1848 Him withG1848 contemptG1848 and mockedG1702 Him, 16dressingG4016 Him in a brightlyG2986 shiningG2986 robeG2066, and sentG375 Him backG375 to PilateG4091. 12And so 17HerodG2264 and PilateG4091 becameG1096 friendsG5384 with oneG240 anotherG240 that veryG846 dayG2250; for previouslyG4391, they had beenG4391G1510 enemiesG2189 towardG4314 eachG848 otherG848.
Pilate Seeks Jesus’ Release
13NowG1161 PilateG4091 summonedG4779 to himself the chiefG749 priestsG749, the 1819rulersG758, and the peopleG2992, 14and he saidG3004 to them, “You broughtG4374 thisG3778 ManG444 to me onG5613 theG5613 groundG5613 thatG5613 20He is incitingG654 the peopleG2992 to revoltG654; and beholdG2400, after examiningG350 Him beforeG1799 you, I 21have foundG2147 noG3762 basisG159 atG3762 allG3762 in the case of thisG3778 ManG444 for the chargesG2723 whichG3739 you are bringingG2723 againstG2596 Him. 15NoG235, norG3761 has 22HerodG2264, for he sentG375 Him backG375 to us; and beholdG2400, nothingG3762 deservingG514 deathG2288 has beenG1510 doneG4238 by Him. 16ThereforeG3767 I will 2324punishG3811 Him and releaseG630 Him.” 17[25NowG1161 he was obligatedG2192G318 to releaseG630 to them at the feastG1859 oneG1520 prisoner.]
18But they criedG349 outG349 allG3826 togetherG3826, sayingG3004, “26AwayG142 with thisG3778 ManG3778, and releaseG630 to us BarabbasG912!” 19(He was oneG3748 whoG3748 had been thrownG906 into prisonG5438 for a revoltG4714 that tookG1096 placeG1096 in the cityG4172, and for murderG5408.) 20But PilateG4091, wantingG2309 to releaseG630 JesusG2424, addressedG4377 them againG3825, 21but they kept on cryingG2019 outG2019, sayingG3004, “CrucifyG4717, crucifyG4717 Him!” 22And he saidG3004 to them a thirdG5154 timeG5154, “WhyG1063, whatG5101 has thisG3778 ManG3778 doneG4160 wrongG2556? I have foundG2147 27in His case noG3762 groundsG159 for a sentence of deathG2288; thereforeG3767 I will 2829punishG3811 Him and releaseG630 Him.” 23But they were insistentG1945, with loudG3173 voicesG5456, demandingG154 that He be crucifiedG4717. And their voicesG5456 began to prevailG2729. 24And so PilateG4091 decidedG1948 to have their demandG155 carriedG1096 outG1096. 25And he releasedG630 the manG3588 for whomG3739 they were askingG154, who had been thrownG906 into prisonG5438 for a revoltG4714 and murderG5408; but he handedG3860 JesusG2424 overG3860 to their willG2307.
Simon Carries the Cross
2630And whenG5613 they ledG520 Him awayG520, they seizedG1949 a manG5100, SimonG4613 ofG2956 31CyreneG2956, as he was comingG2064 in from the countryG68, and placedG2007 onG2007 him the crossG4716 to carryG5342 behindG3693 JesusG2424.
27NowG1161 followingG190 Him was a largeG4183 crowdG4128 of the peopleG2992, and of womenG1135 whoG3739 were 3233mourningG2875 and grievingG2354 for Him. 28But JesusG2424 turnedG4762 to them and saidG3004, “DaughtersG2364 of JerusalemG2419, stopG3361 weepingG2799 for Me, but weepG2799 for yourselvesG1438 and for your childrenG5043. 29For beholdG2400, daysG2250 are comingG2064 whenG1722G3739 they will sayG3004, ‘34BlessedG3107 are thoseG3588 who cannotG4723 bearG4723, and the wombsG2836 that have not givenG1080 birthG1080, and the breastsG3149 that have not nursedG5142.’ 30ThenG5119 they will beginG757 to 35sayG3004 to the mountainsG3735, ‘FallG4098 on us,’ and to the hillsG1015, ‘CoverG2572 us.’ 31For ifG1487 they doG4160 theseG3778 thingsG3778 36whenG1722 the treeG3586 is greenG5200, whatG5101 will happenG1096 37whenG1722 it is dryG3584?”
3238NowG1161 twoG1417 othersG2087, who were criminalsG2557, were alsoG2532 being ledG71 awayG71 to be putG337 toG337 deathG337 with Him.
The Crucifixion
3339And whenG3753 they cameG2064 to the placeG5117 calledG2564 40The SkullG2898, thereG1563 they crucifiedG4717 Him and the criminalsG2557, oneG3739 on the rightG1188 and the otherG3739 on the leftG710. 34[41But JesusG2424 was sayingG3004, “42FatherG3962, forgiveG863 them; for they do not knowG3609 whatG5101 they are doingG4160.”] 43And they castG906 lotsG2819, dividingG1266 His garmentsG2440 amongG1266 themselves. 35And the peopleG2992 stoodG2476 by, watchingG2334. And evenG2532 the 44rulersG758 were sneeringG1592 at Him, sayingG3004, “He savedG4982 othersG243; 45let Him saveG4982 HimselfG1438 ifG1487 thisG3778 is the 46ChristG5547 of GodG2316, His ChosenG1588 OneG1588.” 36The soldiersG4757 alsoG2532 ridiculedG1702 Him, comingG4334 upG4334 to Him, 47offeringG4374 Him sourG3690 wineG3690, 37and sayingG3004, “48IfG1487 You are the KingG935 of the JewsG2453, saveG4982 YourselfG4572!” 38NowG1161 there was alsoG2532 an inscriptionG1923 aboveG1909 Him, “49THISG3778 IS THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWSG2453.”
3950OneG1520 of the criminalsG2557 who were hangedG2910 there was 51hurlingG987 abuseG987 at Him, sayingG3004, “Are You not the 52ChristG5547? 53SaveG4982 YourselfG4572 and us!” 40But the otherG2087 respondedG611, and rebukingG2008 him, saidG5346, “Do you not evenG3761 fearG5399 GodG2316, sinceG3754 you are underG1722 the sameG846 sentenceG2917 ofG2917 condemnationG2917? 41And we indeedG3303 are suffering justlyG1346, for we are receivingG618 54whatG3739 we deserveG514 for our crimesG3739G4238; but thisG3778 ManG3778 has doneG4238 nothingG3762 wrongG824.” 42And he was sayingG3004, “JesusG2424, rememberG3403 me whenG3752 You comeG2064 into Your kingdomG932!” 43And He saidG3004 to him, “TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you, todayG4594 you will be with Me in 55ParadiseG3857.”
4456It was nowG2235 aboutG5616 5758the sixthG1623 hourG5610, and darknessG4655 cameG1096 overG1909 the entireG3650 landG1093 untilG2193 59the ninthG1729 hourG5610, 4560because the sunG2246 stoppedG1587 shiningG1587; and 61the veilG2665 of the templeG3485 was tornG4977 62in twoG3319. 46And JesusG2424, 63cryingG5455 outG5455 with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, saidG3004, “FatherG3962, 64into Your handsG5495 I entrustG3908 My spiritG4151.” And having saidG3004 thisG3778, He 65diedG1606. 4766NowG1161 when the centurionG1543 sawG3708 what had happenedG1096, he began 67praisingG1392 GodG2316, sayingG3004, “ThisG3778 ManG444 was in factG3689 68innocentG1342.” 48And allG3956 the crowdsG3793 who cameG4836 togetherG4836 for thisG3778 spectacleG2335, after watchingG2334 what had happenedG1096, began to returnG5290 home, 6970beatingG5180 their chestsG4738. 4971And allG3956 His acquaintancesG1110 and 72the womenG1135 who accompaniedG4870 Him from GalileeG1056 were standingG2476 at a distanceG3113, seeingG3708 theseG3778 thingsG3778.
Jesus Is Buried
5073And a manG435 namedG3686 JosephG2501, who was a 74memberG1010 ofG1010 theG1010 CouncilG1010, a goodG18 and righteousG1342 manG435 51(he had not consentedG4784 to their planG1012 and actionG4234), a man from ArimatheaG707, a cityG4172 of the JewsG2453, whoG3739 was 75waitingG4327 for the kingdomG932 of GodG2316-- 52thisG3778 manG3778 wentG4334 to PilateG4091 and askedG154 for the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424. 53And he tookG2507 it downG2507 and wrappedG1794 it in a linenG4616 clothG4616, and laidG5087 Him in a tombG3418 cutG2991 intoG2991 theG2991 rockG2991, whereG3757 noG3756 oneG3762 had everG3768 lainG2749. 54It was a 7677preparationG3904 dayG2250, and a SabbathG4521 was about to 78beginG2020. 55NowG1161 79the womenG1135 whoG3748 had comeG4905 with Him from GalileeG1056 followedG2628, and they sawG2300 the tombG3419 and howG5613 His bodyG4983 was laidG5087. 56And then they returnedG5290 and 80preparedG2090 spicesG759 and perfumesG3464.
And 81on the SabbathG4521 they restedG2270 accordingG2596 to the commandmentG1785.
