Jonah’s Disobedience
1The wordH1697 of the LordH3068 cameH1961 to 1JonahH3124 the sonH1121 of AmittaiH573, sayingH559, 2“AriseH6965, goH1980 to 2NinevehH5210, the greatH1419 cityH5892, and 3cryH7121 outH7121 againstH5921 it, becauseH3588 their 4wickednessH7463 has comeH5927 upH5927 beforeH6440 Me.” 3But JonahH3124 gotH6965 upH6965 to fleeH1272 to 5TarshishH8659 6from the presenceH6440 of the LordH3068. So he wentH3381 downH3381 to 7JoppaH3305, foundH4672 a shipH591 that was goingH935 to TarshishH8659, paidH5414 the fareH7939, and 8boardedH3381 it to goH935 with them to TarshishH8659 awayH4480 from the presenceH6440 of the LordH3068.
4However, the 9LordH3068 hurledH2904 a greatH1419 windH7307 on the seaH3220 and there was a greatH1419 stormH5591 on the seaH3220, so that the shipH591 wasH2803 aboutH2803 toH2803 10breakH7665 upH7665. 5Then the sailorsH4419 becameH3372 afraidH3372 and everyH376 manH376 criedH2199 outH2199 to 11his 12godH430, and they 13hurledH2904 the 14cargoH3627 whichH834 was in the shipH591 into the seaH3220 to lightenH7043 it 15for them. But JonahH3124 had goneH3381 belowH3381 into the sternH3411 of the shipH5600, had lainH7901 downH7901, and fallenH7290 soundH7290 asleepH7290. 6So the captainH7227H2259 approachedH7126 him and saidH559, “HowH4100 is it that you are sleepingH7290? GetH6965 upH6965, 16callH7121 on your godH430! PerhapsH194 your 17godH430 will be concernedH6245 about us so that we will not perishH6.”
7And eachH376 manH376 saidH559 to his mateH7453, “ComeH1980, let’s 18castH5307 lotsH1486 so that we may 19findH3045 outH3045 on whoseH4310 accountH7945 thisH2088 catastropheH7463 has struck us.” So they castH5307 lotsH1486, and the 20lotH1486 fellH5307 on JonahH3124. 8Then they saidH559 to him, “21TellH5046 us, nowH4994! On whoseH4310 account has thisH2088 catastropheH7463 struck us? WhatH4100 is your 22occupationH4399, and whereH370 do you comeH935 from? WhatH4100 is your countryH776, and from whatH335H2088 peopleH5971 are you?” 9So he saidH559 to them, “I am a 23HebrewH5680, and I 24fearH3372 the LordH3068 25GodH430 of heavenH8064 whoH834 26madeH6213 the seaH3220 and the dryH3004 landH3004.”
10Then the menH376 becameH3372 extremelyH3374H1419 afraidH3372, and they saidH559 to him, “27HowH4100 could you doH6213 thisH2088?” For the menH376 knewH3045 that he was 28fleeingH1272 from the presenceH6440 of the LordH3068, becauseH3588 he had toldH5046 them. 11So they saidH559 to him, “WhatH4100 should we doH6213 to you so that the seaH3220 will becomeH8367 calmH8367 29for us?”--for the seaH3220 was becomingH1980 increasinglyH1980 stormyH5590. 12And he saidH559 to them, “PickH5375 me upH5375 and hurlH2904 me into the seaH3220. Then the seaH3220 will becomeH8367 calmH8367 30for you, becauseH3588 I knowH3045 that 31on accountH7945 of me thisH2088 greatH1419 stormH5591 has come upon you.” 13However, the menH376 32rowedH2864 desperately to returnH7725 to landH3004, but they couldH3201 not, becauseH3588 the seaH3220 was becomingH1980 even stormierH5590 againstH5921 them. 14Then they criedH7121 outH7121 to the 33LordH3068 and saidH559, “We earnestlyH577 prayH577, OH577 LordH3068, do not let us perishH6 on account of thisH2088 man’sH376 lifeH5315, and do not putH5414 innocentH5355 bloodH1818 on us; for 34You, LordH3068, have doneH6213 as You pleasedH2654.”
15So they pickedH5375 upH5375 JonahH3124 and hurledH2904 him into the seaH3220, and the seaH3220 35stoppedH5975 its ragingH2197. 16Then the menH376 becameH3372 extremelyH3374H1419 afraidH3372 of the LordH3068, and they offeredH2076 a sacrificeH2077 to the LordH3068 and madeH5087 36vowsH5088.
1737And the LordH3068 designatedH4487 a greatH1419 fishH1709 to swallowH1104 JonahH3124, and JonahH3124 was in the 38stomachH4578 of the fishH1709 for threeH7969 daysH3117 and threeH7969 nightsH3915.
