Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Slave
11WhenG1894 He had completedG4137 allG3956 His 2teachingG4487 in the hearingG189 of the peopleG2992, 3He wentG1525 to CapernaumG2746.
2NowG1161 a centurion’sG1543 slaveG1401, whoG3739 was highlyG1784 regardedG1784 by him, was sickG2560 and aboutG3195 toG3195 dieG5053. 3When he heardG191 aboutG4012 JesusG2424, 4he sentG649 some 5JewishG2453 eldersG4245 to Him, askingG2065 Him to comeG2064 and saveG1295 theG1295 lifeG1295 of his slaveG1401. 4When they cameG3854 to JesusG2424, they stronglyG4709 urgedG3870 Him, sayingG3004, “He is worthyG514 for You to grantG3930 thisG3778 to him; 5for he lovesG25 our nationG1484, and it was he who builtG3618 us our synagogueG4864.” 6NowG1161 JesusG2424 started onG4198 His wayG4198 with them; but alreadyG2235, when He was not yet farG3112 from the houseG3614, the centurionG1543 sentG3992 friendsG5384, sayingG3004 to Him, “6LordG2962, do not troubleG4660 Yourself further, for I amG1510 not worthyG2425 for You to enterG1525 underG5259 my roofG4721; 7forG1352 thatG1352 reasonG1352 I did not evenG3761 considerG515 myselfG1683 worthyG515 to comeG2064 to You; but just 7sayG3004 the wordG3056, and my servantG3816 8shall be healedG2390. 8For I alsoG2532 amG1510 a manG444 placed underG5259 authorityG1849, with soldiersG4757 underG5259 myself; and I sayG3004 to thisG3778 oneG3778, ‘GoG4198!’ and he goesG4198, and to anotherG243, ‘ComeG2064!’ and he comesG2064, and to my slaveG1401, ‘DoG4160 thisG3778!’ and he doesG4160 it.” 9NowG1161 when JesusG2424 heardG191 thisG3778, He wasG2296 amazedG2296 at him, and turnedG4762 and saidG3004 to the crowdG3793 that was followingG190 Him, “I sayG3004 to you, 9not evenG3761 in IsraelG2474 have I foundG2147 suchG5118 greatG5118 faithG4102.” 10And when thoseG3588 who had been sentG3992 returnedG5290 to the houseG3624, they foundG2147 the slaveG1401 in goodG5198 healthG5198.
11SoonG1836 afterwardG1722G1836 Jesus wentG4198 to a cityG4172 calledG2564 NainG3484; and His disciplesG3101 were goingG4848 alongG4848 with Him, 10accompaniedG2532 by a largeG4183 crowdG3793. 12NowG1161 as He approachedG1448 the gateG4439 of the cityG4172, 11a deadG2348 man was being carriedG1580 outG1580, the onlyG3439 sonG5207 of his motherG3384, and she was a widowG5503; and a sizeableG2425 crowdG3793 from the cityG4172 was with her. 13When 12the LordG2962 sawG3708 her, He feltG4697 compassionG4697 for her and saidG3004 to her, “Do not go on weepingG2799.” 14And He cameG4334 upG4334 and touchedG681 the coffinG4673; and the bearersG941 cameG2476 toG2476 aG2476 haltG2476. And He saidG3004, “YoungG3495 manG3495, I sayG3004 to you, ariseG1453!” 15And the deadG3498 manG3498 satG339 upG339 and beganG757 to speakG2980. And Jesus gaveG1325 him back to his motherG3384. 1613FearG5401 grippedG2983 them allG3956, and they began 14glorifyingG1392 GodG2316, sayingG3004, “A greatG3173 15prophetG4396 has appearedG1453 amongG1722 us!” and, “GodG2316 has 16visitedG1980 His peopleG2992!” 1717And thisG3778 reportG3056 aboutG4012 Him spreadG1831 throughoutG3650G1722 JudeaG2449 and in allG3956 the surroundingG4066 regionG4066.
The Messengers from John
1818The disciplesG3101 of JohnG2491 alsoG2532 reportedG518 to him aboutG4012 allG3956 theseG3778 thingsG3778. 19And after summoningG4341 19twoG1417 of his disciplesG3101, JohnG2491 sentG3992 them to 20the LordG2962, sayingG3004, “Are You the ComingG2064 OneG2064, orG2228 are we to 21lookG4328 forG4328 anotherG243?” 20When the menG435 cameG3854 to Him, they saidG3004, “JohnG2491 the BaptistG910 has sentG649 us to You, 22to askG3004, ‘Are You the ComingG2064 OneG2064, orG2228 are we to 23lookG4328 forG4328 anotherG243?’” 21At that very 24timeG5610 He 25curedG2323 manyG4183 people of diseasesG3554 and 26afflictionsG3148 and evilG4190 spiritsG4151; and He gaveG5483 sightG991 to manyG4183 who were blindG5185. 22And He answeredG611 and saidG3004 to them, “GoG4198 and reportG518 to JohnG2491 whatG3739 you have seenG3708 and heardG191: peopleG5185 whoG5185 wereG5185 27blindG5185 receiveG308 sightG308, peopleG5560 who limpedG5560 walkG4043, peopleG3015 withG3015 leprosyG3015 are cleansedG2511 and peopleG2974 who were deafG2974 hearG191, deadG3498 peopleG3498 are raisedG1453 upG1453, and 28peopleG4434 whoG4434 areG4434 poorG4434 have the gospelG2097 preachedG2097 to them. 23And blessedG3107 is 29anyoneG3739G1437 whoG3739G1437 does not takeG4624 offenseG4624 at Me.”
24When the messengersG32 of JohnG2491 had leftG565, He beganG757 to speakG3004 to the crowdsG3793 aboutG4012 JohnG2491: “WhatG5101 did you goG1831 outG1831 into the 30wildernessG2048 to seeG2300? A reedG2563 shakenG4531 by the windG417? 2531But whatG5101 did you goG1831 outG1831 to seeG3708? A manG444 dressedG294 in softG3120 clothingG2440? ThoseG3588 who are splendidlyG1741 clothedG2441 and liveG5225 in luxuryG5172 are found in royalG933 palacesG933! 26But whatG5101 did you goG1831 outG1831 to seeG3708? A prophetG4396? YesG3483, I tellG3004 you, and one who is moreG4053 than a prophetG4396. 27ThisG3778 is the one aboutG4012 whomG3739 it is writtenG1125: ‘32BeholdG2400, I am sendingG649 My messengerG32 33aheadG4253 of You, WhoG3739 will prepareG2680 Your wayG3598 beforeG1715 You.’ 28I sayG3004 to you, amongG1722 those bornG1084 of womenG1135 there is noG3762 oneG3762 greaterG3173 than JohnG2491; yetG1161 the one who is 34leastG3398 in the kingdomG932 of GodG2316 is greaterG3173 than he.” 29When allG3956 the peopleG2992 and the taxG5057 collectorsG5057 heardG191 this, they acknowledgedG1344 35God’sG2316 justiceG1344, 36having been baptizedG907 with 37the baptismG908 of JohnG2491. 30But the PhariseesG5330 and the 3839lawyersG3544 rejectedG114 God’sG2316 purposeG1012 for themselvesG1438, not having been baptizedG907 by 40John.
31“To whatG5101 thenG3767 shall I compareG3666 the peopleG444 of thisG3778 generationG1074, and whatG5101 are they likeG3664? 32They are likeG3664 childrenG3813 who sitG2521 in the marketplaceG58 and callG4377 toG4377 oneG240 anotherG240, and sayG3004, ‘We playedG832 theG832 fluteG832 for you, and you did not danceG3738; we sangG2354 aG2354 songG2354 ofG2354 mourningG2354, and you did not weepG2799.’ 33For JohnG2491 the BaptistG910 has comeG2064 neitherG3361 41eatingG2068 breadG740 norG3383 drinkingG4095 wineG3631, and you sayG3004, ‘He hasG2192 a demonG1140!’ 34The SonG5207 of ManG444 has comeG2064 eatingG2068 and drinkingG4095, and you sayG3004, ‘BeholdG2400, a gluttonousG5314 manG444 and a 42heavyG3630 drinkerG3630, a friendG5384 of taxG5057 collectorsG5057 and 43sinnersG268!’ 35And yet wisdomG4678 44is vindicatedG1344 by allG3956 her childrenG5043.”
The Anointing in Galilee
36NowG1161 oneG5100 of the PhariseesG5330 was requestingG2065 Him to eatG2068 with him, and He enteredG1525 the Pharisee’sG5330 houseG3624 and reclinedG2625 at the table. 3745And there was a womanG1135 in the cityG4172 whoG3748 was a 46sinnerG268; and when she learnedG1921 that He was recliningG2621 at the table in the Pharisee’sG5330 houseG3614, she broughtG2865 an alabasterG211 vialG211 of perfumeG3464, 38and standingG2476 behindG3694 Him at His feetG4228, weepingG2799, she beganG757 to wetG1026 His feetG4228 with her tearsG1144, and she wipedG1591 them with the hairG2359 of her headG2776, and began kissingG2705 His feetG4228 and anointingG218 them with the perfumeG3464. 39NowG1161 when the PhariseeG5330 who had invitedG2564 Him sawG3708 this, he saidG3004 to himselfG1438, “IfG1487 thisG3778 ManG3778 were 47a prophetG4396 He would knowG1097 whoG5101 and whatG4217 sortG4217 ofG4217 personG4217 thisG3588 womanG1135 is whoG3748 is touchingG681 Him, that she is a 48sinnerG268!”
Parable of Two Debtors
40And JesusG2424 respondedG611 and saidG3004 to him, “SimonG4613, I haveG2192 somethingG5100 to sayG3004 to you.” And he 49repliedG5346, “SayG3004 it, TeacherG1320.” 41“A moneylenderG1157 hadG1510 twoG1417 debtorsG5533: the oneG1520 owedG3784 fiveG4001 hundredG4001 5051denariiG1220, and the otherG2087, fiftyG4004. 42When they 52were unableG3361G2192 to repayG591, he canceledG5483 the debtsG5483 of bothG297. SoG3767 whichG5101 of them will loveG25 him moreG4183?” 43SimonG4613 answeredG611 and saidG3004, “I assumeG5274 the one for whomG3739 he canceledG5483 the greaterG4183 debtG5483.” And He saidG3004 to him, “You have judgedG2919 correctlyG3723.” 44And turningG4762 towardG4314 the womanG1135, He saidG5346 to SimonG4613, “Do you seeG991 thisG3778 womanG1135? I enteredG1525 your houseG3614; you 53gaveG1325 Me noG3756 waterG5204 for My feetG4228, but she has wetG1026 My feetG4228 with her tearsG1144 and wipedG1591 them with her hairG2359. 45You 5455gaveG1325 Me noG3756 kissG5370; but she has not stoppedG1257 kissingG2705 My feetG4228 sinceG575 the time I cameG1525 inG1525. 4656You did not 57anointG218 My headG2776 with oilG1637, but she anointedG218 My feetG4228 with perfumeG3464. 47For thisG3739 reasonG5484 I sayG3004 to you, her sinsG266, which are manyG4183, have been forgivenG863, for she lovedG25 muchG4183; but the one whoG3739 is forgivenG863 littleG3641, lovesG25 littleG3641.” 48And He saidG3004 to her, “58Your sinsG266 have been forgivenG863.” 49And then thoseG3588 who were recliningG4873 at the table with Him beganG757 sayingG3004 59to themselvesG1438, “60WhoG5101 is thisG3778 Man whoG3739 evenG2532 forgivesG863 sinsG266?” 50And He saidG3004 to the womanG1135, “61Your faithG4102 has savedG4982 you; 62goG4198 in peaceG1515.”
