The Temptation of Jesus

11NowG1161 JesusG2424, fullG4134 of the HolyG40 SpiritG4151, 2returnedG5290 from the JordanG2446 and was ledG71 around 3by the SpiritG4151 in the wildernessG2048 2for 4fortyG5065 daysG2250, being temptedG3985 by the devilG1228. And He ateG2068 nothingG3756G3762 duringG1722 thoseG1565 daysG2250, and when they had endedG4931, He was hungryG3983. 3And the devilG1228 saidG3004 to Him, “IfG1487 You are the SonG5207 of GodG2316, tellG3004 thisG3778 stoneG3037 to becomeG1096 breadG740.” 4And JesusG2424 answeredG611 him, “It is writtenG1125: ‘5ManG444 shall not liveG2198 on breadG740 aloneG3441.’”

56And he ledG321 Him upG321 and showedG1166 Him allG3956 the kingdomsG932 of 78the worldG3625 in a momentG4743 of timeG5550. 6And the devilG1228 saidG3004 to Him, “I will giveG1325 You allG537 thisG3778 domainG1849 and 9its gloryG1391, 10for it has been handedG3860 overG3860 to me, and I giveG1325 it to whomeverG3739G1437 I wantG2309. 7ThereforeG3767 ifG1437 You 11worshipG4352 beforeG1799 me, it shall allG3956 be YoursG4674.” 8JesusG2424 repliedG611G3004 to him, “It is writtenG1125: ‘12You shall worshipG4352 the LordG2962 your GodG2316 and serveG3000 Him onlyG3441.’”

913And he broughtG71 Him into JerusalemG2419 and had Him standG2476 on the pinnacleG4419 of the templeG2413, and saidG3004 to Him, “IfG1487 You are the SonG5207 of GodG2316, throwG906 YourselfG4572 downG2736 fromG1782 hereG1782; 10for it is writtenG1125: ‘14He will giveG1781 His angelsG32 ordersG1781 concerningG4012 You, to protectG1314 You,’ 11and, ‘15On their handsG5495 they will liftG142 You up, SoG3379 thatG3379 You do notG3379 strikeG4350 Your footG4228 againstG4314 a stoneG3037.’” 12And JesusG2424 answeredG611 and saidG3004 to him, “It has been statedG3004, ‘16You shall not putG1598 the LordG2962 your GodG2316 toG1598 theG1598 testG1598.’”

13And so when the devilG1228 had finishedG4931 everyG3956 temptationG3986, he leftG868 Him untilG891 an opportuneG2540 timeG2540.

Jesus’ Public Ministry

14And 17JesusG2424 returnedG5290 to GalileeG1056 in the powerG1411 of the SpiritG4151, and 18newsG5345 aboutG4012 Him spreadG1831 throughG2596 allG3650 the surroundingG4066 regionG4066. 15And He began 19teachingG1321 in their synagoguesG4864 and was praisedG1392 by allG3956.

16And He cameG2064 to 20NazarethG3478, whereG3757 He had beenG1510 broughtG5142 upG5142; and as was His customG1486, 21He enteredG1525 the synagogueG4864 on the SabbathG4521, and 22stoodG450 upG450 to readG314. 17And the scrollG975 of IsaiahG2268 the prophetG4396 was handedG1929 to Him. And He unrolledG380 the scrollG975 and foundG2147 the placeG5117 whereG3757 it was writtenG1125:18“23The SpiritG4151 of the LordG2962 is upon Me, BecauseG3739G1752 He anointedG5548 Me to bringG2097 goodG2097 newsG2097 to the poorG4434. He has sentG649 Me to proclaimG2784 releaseG859 to captivesG164, And recoveryG309 ofG309 sightG309 to the blindG5185, To setG649 freeG1722G859 those who are oppressedG2352,1924To proclaimG2784 the favorableG1184 yearG1763 of the LordG2962.” 20And He 25rolledG4428 upG4428 the scrollG975, gaveG591 it backG591 to the attendantG5257, and 26satG2523 downG2523; and the eyesG3788 of allG3956 the people in the synagogueG4864 were intentlyG816 directedG816 at Him. 21NowG1161 He beganG757 to sayG3004 to them, “TodayG4594 thisG3778 ScriptureG1124 has been fulfilledG4137 in your 27hearingG3775.” 22And allG3956 the people were 28speakingG3140 wellG3140 ofG3140 Him, and admiringG2296 the 29graciousG5485 wordsG3056 which were comingG1607 from His 30lipsG4750; and yet they were sayingG3004, “31Is thisG3778 not Joseph’sG2501 sonG5207?” 23And He saidG3004 to them, “NoG3843 doubtG3843 you will 32quoteG3004 thisG3778 proverbG3850 to Me: ‘PhysicianG2395, healG2323 yourselfG4572! AllG3745 the miracles that we heardG191 were doneG1096 33in CapernaumG2746, doG4160 hereG5602 in 34Your hometownG3968 asG2532 wellG2532.’” 24But He saidG3004, “TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you, 35noG3762 prophetG4396 is welcomeG1184 in his hometownG3968. 25But I sayG3004 to you in truthG225, there were manyG4183 widowsG5503 in IsraelG2474 36in the daysG2250 of ElijahG2243, whenG3753 the skyG3772 was shutG2808 upG2808 for threeG5140 yearsG2094 and sixG1803 monthsG3376, whenG5613 a 37severeG3173 famineG3042 cameG1096 overG1909 allG3956 the landG1093; 26and yet ElijahG2243 was sentG3992 to noneG3762 of them, but only to 3839ZarephathG4558, in the land of 40SidonG4606, to a womanG1135 who was a widowG5503. 27And there were manyG4183 withG3015 leprosyG3015 in IsraelG2474 in the timeG1909 of ElishaG1666 the prophetG4396; and noneG3762 of them was 41cleansedG2511, but only 42NaamanG3483 the SyrianG4948.” 28And allG3956 the people in the synagogueG4864 were filledG4092 with rageG2372 as they heardG191 theseG3778 thingsG3778; 29and they gotG450 upG450 and 43droveG1544 Him outG1544 of the cityG4172, and broughtG71 Him to the 44crestG3790 of the hillG3735 on whichG3739 their cityG4172 had been builtG3618, soG5620 thatG5620 they couldG5620 throwG2630 Him downG2630 fromG2630 the cliffG2630. 30But He 45passedG1330 throughG1223 their midstG3319 and wentG4198 onG4198 His wayG4198.

31And 46He cameG2718 downG2718 to 47CapernaumG2746, a cityG4172 of GalileeG1056; and He was teachingG1321 them on the SabbathG4521; 32and 48they were amazedG1605 at His teachingG1322, becauseG3754 49His 50messageG3056 was delivered with authorityG1849. 33In the synagogueG4864 there was a manG444 51possessedG2192 by the spiritG4151 of an uncleanG169 demonG1140, and he criedG349 outG349 with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, 34“LeaveG1436 us aloneG1436! 5253WhatG5101 business do You have with us, JesusG2424 54of 55NazarethG3479? Have You comeG2064 to destroyG622 us? I knowG3609 whoG5101 You are--56the HolyG40 OneG40 of GodG2316!” 35But JesusG2424 57rebukedG2008 him, sayingG3004, “Be quietG5392 and comeG1831 outG1831 of him!” And when the demonG1140 had thrownG4496 him downG4496 in the midstG3319 of the people, it cameG1831 outG1831 of him withoutG3367 doingG984 him anyG3367 harmG984. 36And amazementG2285 cameG1096 upon them allG3956, and they began talkingG4814 with oneG240 anotherG240, sayingG3004, “WhatG5101 is 58thisG3778 messageG3056? For 59with authorityG1849 and powerG1411 He commandsG2004 the uncleanG169 spiritsG4151, and they comeG1831 outG1831!” 37And 60the newsG2279 aboutG4012 Him was spreadingG1607 into everyG3956 localityG5117 of the surroundingG4066 regionG4066.

Many Are Healed

3861ThenG2532 He gotG450 upG450 and left the synagogueG4864, and enteredG1525 Simon’sG4613 homeG3614. NowG1161 Simon’sG4613 mother-in-lawG3994 was 62sufferingG4912 from a highG3173 feverG4446, and they askedG2065 Him 63to helpG4012 her. 39And standingG2186 overG1883 her, He 64rebukedG2008 the feverG4446, and it leftG863 her; and she immediatelyG3916 gotG450 upG450 and servedG1247 them.

4065NowG1161 while 66the sunG2246 was settingG1416, allG537 thoseG3745 whoG3745 hadG2192 any who were sickG770 with variousG4164 diseasesG3554 broughtG71 them to Him; and He was 67layingG2007 His handsG5495 onG2007 eachG1538 oneG1520 of them and 68healingG2323 them. 41DemonsG1140 alsoG2532 were comingG1831 outG1831 of manyG4183, shoutingG2905, “You are 69the SonG5207 of GodG2316!” And yet He was 70rebukingG2008 them and would 71not allowG1439 them to speakG2980, becauseG3754 they knewG3609 that He was the 72ChristG5547.

4273NowG1161 when dayG2250 cameG1096, Jesus leftG1831 and wentG4198 to a secludedG2048 placeG5117; and the crowdsG3793 were searchingG1934 forG1934 Him, and they cameG2064 to Him and tried to keepG2722 Him fromG2722 leavingG4198G575 them. 43But He saidG3004 to them, “I mustG1163 alsoG2532 preachG2097 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316 to the otherG2087 citiesG4172, 74becauseG3754 I was sentG649 for thisG3778 purpose.”

44SoG2532 He kept on preachingG2784 in the synagoguesG4864 75of 76JudeaG2449.
