Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
1It happenedG1096 that whenG1722 He wentG2064 into the houseG3624 of oneG5100 of the 1leadersG758 of the PhariseesG5330 on the SabbathG4521 to eatG2068 breadG740, 2they were watchingG3906 Him 3closelyG3906. 2And 4thereG2400 in frontG1715 of Him was a manG444 sufferingG5203 fromG5203 5edemaG5203. 3And JesusG2424 respondedG611 and saidG3004 to the 67lawyersG3544 and 8PhariseesG5330, “9Is it lawfulG1832 to healG2323 on the SabbathG4521, orG2228 not?” 4But they keptG2270 silentG2270. And He tookG1949 holdG1949 of him and healedG2390 him, and sentG630 him awayG630. 5And He saidG3004 to them, “1011WhichG5101 one of you will have a sonG5207 orG2228 an oxG1016 fallG4098 into a wellG5421, and will not immediatelyG2112 pullG385 him outG385 on a SabbathG4521 dayG2250?” 612And they couldG2480 offerG470 noG3756 replyG470 to thisG3778.
Parable of the Guests
7NowG1161 He began tellingG3004 a parableG3850 to the invitedG2564 guestsG2564 when He noticedG1907 howG4459 13they had been pickingG1586 outG1586 the placesG4411 ofG4411 honorG4411 at the table, sayingG3004 to them, 8“WheneverG3752 you are invitedG2564 by someoneG5100 to a weddingG1062 feastG1062, 14do not 15takeG2625 the placeG4411 ofG4411 honorG4411, for someone moreG1784 distinguishedG1784 than you may have beenG1510 invitedG2564 by him, 9and the one who invitedG2564 you 16bothG2532G846 will comeG2064 and sayG3004 to you, ‘GiveG1325 your placeG5117 to thisG3778 personG3778,’ and thenG5119 17in disgraceG152 you will proceedG757 to occupyG2722 the lastG2078 placeG5117. 10But wheneverG3752 you are invitedG2564, goG4198 and 18takeG377 the lastG2078 placeG5117, soG2443 thatG2443 whenG3752 the one who has invitedG2564 you comesG2064, he will sayG3004 to you, ‘FriendG5384, 19moveG4320 upG4320 higherG511’; thenG5119 you will have honorG1391 inG1799 theG1799 sightG1799 ofG1799 allG3956 who are 20diningG4873 at the tableG4873 with you. 1121For everyoneG3956 who exaltsG5312 himselfG1438 will be humbledG5013, and the one who humblesG5013 himselfG1438 will be exaltedG5312.”
12NowG1161 He alsoG2532 went on to sayG3004 to the one who had invitedG2564 Him, “WheneverG3752 you giveG4160 a luncheonG712 orG2228 a dinnerG1173, do not inviteG5455 your friendsG5384, your brothersG80, your relativesG4773, norG3366 wealthyG4145 neighborsG1069, otherwiseG3379 they may alsoG2532 inviteG479 you to a meal inG479 returnG479, and that will be your 22repaymentG468. 13But wheneverG3752 you giveG4160 a 23banquetG1403, inviteG2564 peopleG4434 who are poorG4434, who haveG374 disabilitiesG374, who are limpingG5560, and peopleG5185 whoG5185 areG5185 blindG5185; 14and you will be blessedG3107, sinceG3754 they 24do not haveG2192 the means to repayG467 you; for you will be repaidG467 at 25the resurrectionG386 of the righteousG1342.”
15NowG1161 when oneG5100 of thoseG3588 who were recliningG4873 at the table with Him heardG191 thisG3778, he saidG3004 to Him, “26BlessedG3107 is everyoneG3748 whoG3748 will eatG2068 breadG740 in the kingdomG932 of GodG2316!”
Parable of the Dinner
16But He saidG3004 to him, “27A manG444 was givingG4160 a bigG3173 dinnerG1173, and he invitedG2564 manyG4183; 17and at the dinnerG1173 hourG5610 he sentG649 his slaveG1401 to tellG3004 thoseG3588 who had been invitedG2564, ‘ComeG2064, becauseG3754 everything is readyG2092 nowG2235.’ 18And yet they allG3956 alikeG575G1520 beganG757 to makeG3868 excusesG3868. The firstG4413 oneG4413 saidG3004 to him, ‘I purchasedG59 a fieldG68 and I needG318 to goG1831 outG1831 to lookG3708 at it; 28pleaseG2065 considerG2192 me excusedG3868.’ 19And anotherG2087 oneG2087 saidG3004, ‘I boughtG59 fiveG4002 yokeG2201 of oxenG1016, and I am goingG4198 to tryG1381 them outG1381; 29pleaseG2065 considerG2192 me excusedG3868.’ 20And anotherG2087 oneG2087 saidG3004, ‘30I tookG1060 a womanG1135 as my wifeG1060, and for that reasonG1223 I cannotG1410G3756 comeG2064.’ 21And the slaveG1401 cameG3854 back and reportedG518 thisG3778 to his masterG2962. ThenG5119 the headG3617 ofG3617 theG3617 householdG3617 becameG3710 angryG3710 and saidG3004 to his slaveG1401, ‘GoG1831 outG1831 at onceG5030 into the streetsG4116 and lanesG4505 of the cityG4172 and bringG1521 inG1521 hereG5602 thoseG3588 who are poorG4434, those with disabilitiesG374, those who are blindG5185, and those who are limpingG5560.’ 22And later the slaveG1401 saidG3004, ‘MasterG2962, whatG3739 you commandedG2004 has beenG1096 doneG1096, and stillG2089 there is roomG5117.’ 23And the masterG2962 saidG3004 to the slaveG1401, ‘GoG1831 outG1831 into the roadsG3598 and the hedgesG5418 and pressG315 uponG315 them to comeG1525 inG1525, soG2443 thatG2443 my houseG3624 will be filledG1072. 24For I tellG3004 you, noneG3762 of thoseG1565 menG435 who were invitedG2564 shall tasteG1089 my dinnerG1173.’”
Discipleship Tested
25NowG1161 31largeG4183 crowdsG3793 were goingG4848 alongG4848 with Him, and He turnedG4762 and saidG3004 to them, 26“32IfG1487 anyoneG5100 comesG2064 to Me and does not 33hateG3404 his own fatherG3962, motherG3384, wifeG1135, childrenG5043, brothersG80, sistersG79, yesG2089, and evenG2532 his ownG1438 lifeG5590, he cannotG1410G3756 be My discipleG3101. 27WhoeverG3748 does not 34carryG941 his ownG1438 crossG4716 and comeG2064 afterG3694 Me cannotG1410G3756 be My discipleG3101. 28For whichG5101 one of you, when he wantsG2309 to buildG3618 a towerG4444, does not firstG4413 sitG2523 downG2523 and calculateG5585 the costG1160, to see ifG1487 he hasG2192 enough to completeG535 it? 29OtherwiseG2443G3361, whenG4218 he has laidG5087 a foundationG2310 and isG2480 not ableG2480 to finishG1615, allG3956 who are watchingG2334 it will beginG757 to ridiculeG1702 him, 30sayingG3004, ‘ThisG3778 personG444 beganG757 to buildG3618, and wasG2480 not ableG2480 to finishG1615!’ 31OrG2228 whatG5101 kingG935, when he setsG4198 outG4198 to meetG4820 anotherG2087 kingG935 in battleG4171, will not firstG4413 sitG2523 downG2523 and 35considerG1011 whetherG1487 he is strongG1415 enough with tenG1176 thousandG5505 men to faceG5221 the one comingG2064 againstG1909 him with twentyG1501 thousandG5505? 32OtherwiseG1490, while the otherG846 is stillG2089 farG4206 awayG4206, he sendsG649 a delegationG4242 and requestsG2065 termsG4314 of peaceG1515. 33SoG3779 thenG3767, noneG3956G3756 of you canG1410 be My discipleG3101 whoG3739 36does not 37giveG657 upG657 allG3956 his ownG1438 possessionsG5225.
34“ThereforeG3767, saltG217 is goodG2570; but 38ifG1437 evenG2532 saltG217 has becomeG3471 tastelessG3471, with whatG5101 will it be 39seasonedG741? 35It is uselessG3777G2111 eitherG3777 for the soilG1093 orG3777 the manureG2874 pileG2874, so it is thrownG906 out. 40The one who hasG2192 earsG3775 to hearG191, 41let him hearG191.”
