Parables on Prayer
1NowG1161 He was tellingG3004 them a parableG3850 to showG4314 that at allG3842 timesG3842 they 1oughtG1163 to prayG4336 and not 2becomeG1457 discouragedG1457, 2sayingG3004, “In a certainG5100 cityG4172 thereG1510 was a judgeG2923 who did not fearG5399 GodG2316 and did not 3respectG1788 any personG444. 3NowG1161 there was a widowG5503 in that cityG4172, and she kept comingG2064 to him, sayingG3004, ‘GiveG1556 me justiceG1556 againstG575 my 4opponentG476.’ 4For a whileG5550 he was unwillingG3756G2309; but laterG3326G3778 he saidG3004 to himselfG1438, ‘EvenG2532 thoughG1487 I do not fearG5399 GodG2316 norG3761 5respectG1788 any personG444, 5yetG1065 6becauseG1223 thisG3778 widowG5503 is botheringG3930G2873 me, I will giveG1556 her justiceG1556; otherwiseG2443G3361 7by continuallyG1519G5056 comingG2064 she will 8wearG5299 me outG5299.’” 6And 9the LordG2962 saidG3004, “ListenG191 to whatG5101 the unrighteousG93 judgeG2923 saidG3004; 7nowG1161, will GodG2316 not 10bringG4160 aboutG4160 justiceG1557 for His 11electG1588 who cryG994 outG994 to Him dayG2250 12and nightG3571, and will He 13delayG3114 longG3114 for them? 8I tellG3004 you that He will bringG4160 aboutG4160 justiceG1557 for them quicklyG5034. HoweverG4133, when the SonG5207 of ManG444 comesG2064, 14will He findG2147 15faithG4102 on the earthG1093?”
The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
9NowG1161 He alsoG2532 toldG3004 thisG3778 parableG3850 to someG5100 peopleG5100 who 16trustedG3982 in themselvesG1438 that they were righteousG1342, and 17viewedG1848 othersG3062 withG1848 contemptG1848: 10“TwoG1417 menG444 18wentG305 upG305 into the 19templeG2413 to prayG4336, oneG1520 a PhariseeG5330 and the otherG2087 a taxG5057 collectorG5057. 11The PhariseeG5330 20stoodG2476 and began prayingG4336 thisG3778 inG4314 regardG4314 toG4314 himselfG1438: ‘GodG2316, I thankG2168 You that I amG1510 not likeG5618 otherG3062 peopleG444: swindlersG727, crookedG94, adulterersG3432, orG2228 evenG2532 likeG5613 thisG3778 taxG5057 collectorG5057. 12I 21fastG3522 twiceG1364 a weekG4521; I 22payG586 tithesG586 of allG3956 that I getG2932.’ 13But the taxG5057 collectorG5057, 23standingG2476 someG3113 distanceG3113 awayG3113, 24was evenG3761 unwillingG3756G2309 to raiseG1869 his eyesG3788 towardG1519 heavenG3772, but 25was beatingG5180 his chestG4738, sayingG3004, ‘GodG2316, beG2433 26mercifulG2433 to me, the sinnerG268!’ 14I tellG3004 you, thisG3778 manG3778 wentG2597 to his houseG3624 justifiedG1344 ratherG3844 thanG3844 the otherG1565 oneG1565; 27for everyoneG3956 who exaltsG5312 himselfG1438 will be humbledG5013, but the one who humblesG5013 himselfG1438 will be exaltedG5312.”
1528NowG1161 they were bringingG4374 evenG2532 their babiesG1025 to Him soG2443 thatG2443 He would touchG681 them; but when the disciplesG3101 sawG3708 it, they began rebukingG2008 them. 16But JesusG2424 calledG4341 for 29the little ones, sayingG3004, “AllowG863 the childrenG3813 to comeG2064 to Me, and do not 30forbidG2967 them, for the kingdomG932 of GodG2316 belongsG1510 to suchG5108 asG5108 theseG5108. 17TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you, 31whoeverG3739G302 does not receiveG1209 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316 likeG5613 a childG3813 will not enterG1525 it atG3361 allG3361.”
The Rich Young Ruler
1832A rulerG758 questionedG1905 Him, sayingG3004, “GoodG18 TeacherG1320, whatG5101 shall I doG4160 to inheritG2816 eternalG166 lifeG2222?” 19But JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “WhyG5101 do you callG3004 Me 33goodG18? NoG3762 oneG3762 is 34goodG18 exceptG1508 GodG2316 aloneG1520. 20You knowG3609 the commandmentsG1785, ‘35Do not commitG3431 adulteryG3431, Do not murderG5407, Do not stealG2813, Do not giveG5576 falseG5576 testimonyG5576, HonorG5091 your fatherG3962 and motherG3384.’” 21And he saidG3004, “AllG3956 theseG3778 thingsG3778 I have keptG5442 sinceG1537 my youthG3503.” 22NowG1161 when JesusG2424 heardG191 this, He saidG3004 to him, “OneG1520 thingG1520 you stillG2089 lackG3007; 36sellG4453 allG3956 that you possessG2192 and distributeG1239 the money to the poorG4434, and you will haveG2192 37treasureG2344 in heavenG3772; and comeG1204, followG190 Me.” 23But when he had heardG191 theseG3778 thingsG3778, he becameG1096 veryG4036 sadG4036, for he was extremelyG4970 wealthyG4145. 24And JesusG2424 lookedG3708 at him and saidG3004, “38HowG4459 hardG1423 it is for thoseG3588 who are wealthyG5536 to enterG1531 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316! 25For 39it is easierG2123 for a camelG2574 to 40goG1525 throughG1223 the eyeG5144 of a needleG956, thanG2228 for a richG4145 personG4145 to enterG1525 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316!” 26Those who heardG191 Him saidG3004, “And so whoG5101 canG1410 be savedG4982?” 27But He saidG3004, “41The thingsG102 thatG102 areG102 impossibleG102 with peopleG444 are possibleG1415 with GodG2316.”
28PeterG4074 saidG3004, “BeholdG2400, 42we have leftG863 43our ownG2398 homes and followedG190 You.” 29And He saidG3004 to them, “TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you, 44there is noG3762 oneG3762 whoG3739 has leftG863 houseG3614, orG2228 wifeG1135, orG2228 brothersG80, orG2228 parentsG1118, orG2228 childrenG5043 for the sakeG1752 of the kingdomG932 of GodG2316, 30whoG3739 will not receiveG2983 manyG4179 timesG4179 asG4179 muchG4179 at thisG3778 timeG2540, and in 45the ageG165 to comeG2064, eternalG166 lifeG2222.”
3146NowG1161 He tookG3880 the twelveG1427 asideG3880 and saidG3004 to them, “BeholdG2400, 47we are goingG305 upG305 to JerusalemG2419, and 48allG3956 the thingsG3956 that have been writtenG1125 throughG1223 the prophetsG4396 about the SonG5207 of ManG444 will be accomplishedG5055. 3249For He will be 50handedG3860 overG3860 to the GentilesG1484, and will be ridiculedG1702, and abusedG5195, and spitG1716 uponG1716, 33and after they have floggedG3146 Him, they will killG615 Him; and on the thirdG5154 dayG2250 He will riseG450.” 345152The disciples understoodG4920 noneG3762 of theseG3778 thingsG3778, and the meaning of thisG3778 statementG4487 was hiddenG2928 from them, and they did not comprehendG1097 the things that were saidG3004.
Bartimaeus Receives Sight
3553NowG1161 as 5455Jesus was approachingG1448 JerichoG2410, a manG5185 whoG5185 wasG5185 blindG5185 was sittingG2521 by the roadG3598, beggingG1871. 36But when he heardG191 a crowdG3793 goingG1279 by, he began inquiringG4441 whatG5101 thisG3778 was. 37They toldG518 him that JesusG2424 of NazarethG3480 was passingG3928 by. 38And he calledG994 outG994, sayingG3004, “JesusG2424, 56SonG5207 of DavidG1160, haveG1653 mercyG1653 on me!” 39ThoseG3588 who ledG4254 theG4254 wayG4254 were sternlyG2008 tellingG2008 him to be quietG4601; but he kept cryingG2905 outG2905 allG4183 the moreG3123, “57SonG5207 of DavidG1160, haveG1653 mercyG1653 on me!” 40And JesusG2424 stoppedG2476 and commandedG2753 that he be broughtG71 to Him; and when he cameG1448 nearG1448, He askedG1905 him, 41“WhatG5101 do you wantG2309 Me to doG4160 for you?” And he saidG3004, “LordG2962, I want to regainG308 my sightG308!” 42And JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “RegainG308 your sightG308; 58your faithG4102 has 59madeG4982 you wellG4982.” 43And immediatelyG3916 he regainedG308 his sightG308 and began followingG190 Him, 60glorifyingG1392 GodG2316; and when 61allG3956 the peopleG2992 sawG3708 it, they gaveG1325 praiseG136 to GodG2316.
