Jesus Delivered to Pilate
(Mark 15:1–5)
1WhenG1161 morningG4405 cameG1096, allG3956 theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG2532 eldersG4245 of theG3588 peopleG2992 conspiredG2983G4824 againstG2596 JesusG2424 toG5620 put Him to deathG2289G846. 2They boundG1210 HimG846, led Him awayG520, andG2532 handed Him over toG3860 PilateG4091 theG3588 governorG2232.
Judas Hangs Himself
(Zechariah 11:10–17)
3WhenG5119 JudasG2455, whoG3588 had betrayed HimG3860G846, sawG3708 thatG3754 Jesus was condemnedG2632, he was filled with remorseG3338 and returnedG4762 theG3588 thirtyG5144 pieces of silverG694 to theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG2532 eldersG4245. 4“I have sinnedG264 by betrayingG3860 innocentG121 bloodG129,” he saidG3004.
“WhatG5101 is that toG4314 usG1473?” they repliedG2036. “YouG4771 bear the responsibilityG3708.”
5SoG2532 Judas threwG4496 theG3588 silverG694 intoG1519 theG3588 templeG3485 and leftG402. Then he went awayG565 andG2532 hanged himselfG519.
TheG3588 chief priestsG749 picked upG2983 theG3588 pieces of silverG694 and saidG2036, “It is unlawfulG3756G1832 to putG906 thisG846 intoG1519 theG3588 treasuryG2878, sinceG1893 it isG1510 bloodG129 moneyG5092.” 7After conferring togetherG2983G4824, they used the money to buyG59 theG3588 potter’sG3588G2763 fieldG68 asG1519 a burial placeG5027 forG3588 foreignersG3581. 8That is whyG1352 it has been calledG2564 the FieldG68 of BloodG129 toG2193 this dayG4594. 9ThenG5119 whatG3588 was spokenG2046 throughG1223 JeremiahG2408 theG3588 prophetG4396 was fulfilledG4137:
Jesus before Pilate
(Luke 23:1–5; John 18:28–40)
11MeanwhileG1161 JesusG2424 stoodG2476 beforeG1715 theG3588 governorG2232, whoG3588 questionedG1905 HimG846: “AreG1510 YouG4771 theG3588 KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453?”
“YouG4771 have saidG3004 so,” JesusG2424 repliedG5346.
12AndG2532 when He was accusedG1722G3588G846G2723 byG5259 theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG2532 eldersG4245, He gave no answerG611G3762.
13ThenG5119 PilateG4091 askedG3004 HimG846, “Do You not hearG3756G191 how manyG4214 charges they are bringing againstG2649 YouG4771?”
14ButG2532 Jesus gave no answerG3756G611G846, not evenG3761 toG4314 a singleG1520 chargeG4487, muchG3029 toG5620 theG3588 governor’sG2232 amazementG2296.
The Crowd Chooses Barabbas
(Mark 15:6–11; Luke 23:13–25)
15NowG1161 it was theG3588 governor’sG2232 customG1486 atG2596 the feastG1859 to releaseG630 to theG3588 crowdG3793 aG1520 prisonerG1198 ofG3739 their choosingG2309. 16At that timeG5119 they were holdingG2192 a notoriousG1978 prisonerG1198 namedG3004 BarabbasG912.2 17SoG3767 when the crowd had assembledG846G4863, PilateG4091 askedG2036 themG846, “WhichG5101 one do you wantG2309 me to releaseG630 to youG4771: BarabbasG912, orG2228 JesusG2424 whoG3588 is calledG3004 ChristG5547?” 18ForG1063 he knewG1492 it was out ofG1223 envyG5355 that they had handed Jesus overG3860 to himG846.
19While Pilate was sittingG846G2521 onG1909 theG3588 judgment seatG968, hisG846 wifeG1135 sentG649 himG846 this messageG3004: “Have nothing to do withG3367G4771G2532 thatG1565 innocentG1342 man, forG1063 I have sufferedG3958 terriblyG4183 inG2596 a dreamG3677 todayG4594 because ofG1223 HimG846.”
20ButG1161 theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG2532 eldersG4245 persuadedG3982 theG3588 crowdsG3793 toG2443 ask forG154 BarabbasG912 andG1161 to have Jesus put to deathG622G3588G2424.
21“WhichG5101 ofG575 theG3588 twoG1417 do you wantG2309 me to releaseG630 to youG4771?” askedG611 theG3588 governorG2232.
“BarabbasG912,” they repliedG2036.
22“WhatG5101 thenG3767 should I do withG4160 JesusG2424 whoG3588 is calledG3004 ChristG5547?” PilateG4091 askedG3004.
They all answeredG3956G3004, “Crucify HimG4717!”
23“WhyG1063?” askedG5346 Pilate. “WhatG5101 evilG2556 has He doneG4160?”
ButG1161 they shoutedG2896 all the louderG4057, “Crucify HimG4717!”
Pilate Washes His Hands
(Mark 15:12–15)
24WhenG1161 PilateG4091 sawG3708 thatG3754 he was accomplishingG5623 nothingG3762, but thatG235 insteadG3123 a riotG2351 was breaking outG1096, he tookG2983 waterG5204 and washedG633 his handsG5495 beforeG561 theG3588 crowdG3793. “I amG1510 innocentG121 ofG575 thisG3778 man’s bloodG129,3” he saidG3004. “YouG4771 bear the responsibilityG3708.”
AllG3956 theG3588 peopleG2992 answeredG611, “HisG846 bloodG129 be onG1909 usG1473 andG2532 onG1909 ourG1473 childrenG5043!”
26So Pilate releasedG630 BarabbasG912 to themG846. ButG1161 he had Jesus floggedG5417G3588G2424, and handed Him overG3860 toG2443 be crucifiedG4717.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
(Isaiah 50:4–11; Mark 15:16–20; Luke 22:63–65; John 19:1–15)
27ThenG5119 theG3588 governor’sG2232 soldiersG4757 tookG3880 JesusG2424 intoG1519 theG3588 PraetoriumG4232 and gatheredG4863 theG3588 wholeG3650 companyG4686 aroundG1909 HimG846. 28They strippedG1562 HimG846 and putG4060 a scarletG2847 robeG5511 on HimG846. 29AndG2532 they twisted togetherG4120 a crownG4735 ofG1537 thornsG173 and setG2007 it onG1909 HisG846 headG2776. They put a staffG2563 inG1722 HisG846 right handG1188, knelt downG1120 beforeG1715 HimG846, and mockedG1702 HimG846, sayingG3004, “HailG5463, KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453!” 30ThenG2532 they spitG1716 onG1519 HimG846 and tookG2983 theG3588 staffG2563 andG2532 struckG5180 HimG846 onG1519 theG3588 head repeatedlyG2776.
31AfterG2532G3753 they had mockedG1702 HimG846, they removedG1562 theG3588 robeG5511 andG2532 putG1746 HisG846 own clothesG2440 back on HimG846. ThenG2532 they led Him awayG520 toG1519 crucifyG4717 Him.
The Crucifixion
(Psalm 22:1–31; Mark 15:21–32; Luke 23:26–43; John 19:16–27)
32Along the wayG1161G1831 they foundG2147 a manG444 from CyreneG2956, namedG3686 SimonG4613, and they forcedG29 himG3778 toG2443 carryG142 theG3588 crossG4716 ofG846 Jesus.
33AndG2532 when they cameG2064 toG1519 a placeG5117 calledG3004 GolgothaG1115, whichG3739 meansG1510G3004 The PlaceG5117 of the SkullG2898, 34they offeredG1325 HimG846 wineG3631 to drinkG4095, mixedG3396 withG3326 gallG5521; butG2532 after tastingG1089 it, He refusedG2309G3756 to drinkG4095 it.
35WhenG1161 they had crucifiedG4717 HimG846, they divided upG1266 HisG846 garmentsG2440 by castingG906 lotsG2819.4 36AndG2532 sitting downG2521, they kept watch overG5083 HimG846 thereG1563.
37AboveG1883 HisG846 headG2776 they postedG2007 theG3588 writtenG1125 chargeG156 against HimG846:
THEG3588 KINGG935 OF THEG3588 JEWSG2453.
TwoG1417 robbersG30275 were crucifiedG4717 withG4862 HimG846, oneG1520 onG1537 His rightG1188 andG2532 the other onG1537 His leftG2176.
39AndG1161 those whoG3588 passed byG3899 heaped abuse onG987 HimG846, shakingG2795 theirG846 headsG2776 40andG2532 sayingG3004, “You whoG3588 are going to destroyG2647 theG3588 templeG3485 andG2532 rebuildG3618 it inG1722 threeG5140 daysG2250, saveG4982 YourselfG4572! IfG1487 You areG1510 the SonG5207 of GodG2316, come downG2597 fromG575 theG3588 crossG4716!”
41In the same wayG3668, theG3588 chief priestsG749, scribesG1122, andG2532 eldersG4245 mocked HimG1702, sayingG2036, 42“He savedG4982 othersG243, but He cannotG3756G1410 saveG4982 HimselfG1438. He isG1510 the KingG935 of IsraelG2474! Let Him come downG2597 nowG3568 fromG575 theG3588 crossG4716, andG2532 we will believeG4100 inG1909 HimG846. 43He trustsG3982 inG1909 GodG2316. Let God deliverG4506 HimG846 nowG3568 ifG1487 He wants HimG2309.6 ForG1063 He saidG2036, ‘I amG1510 the SonG5207 of GodG2316.’”
44In the same wayG1161G3588G846, evenG2532 theG3588 robbersG3027 whoG3588 were crucifiedG4957 withG4862 HimG846 beratedG3679 HimG846.
The Death of Jesus
(Psalm 22:1–31; Mark 15:33–41; Luke 23:44–49; John 19:28–30)
FromG575 the sixthG1623 hourG5610 untilG2193 the ninthG1766 hourG56107 darknessG4655 cameG1096 overG1909 allG3956 theG3588 landG1093. 46AboutG4012 theG3588 ninthG1766 hourG5610 JesusG2424 cried outG310 in a loud voiceG3173G5456, “EliG2241, EliG2241,8 lemaG2982 sabachthaniG4518?” whichG3778 meansG1510, “MyG1473 GodG2316, MyG1473 GodG2316, whyG2443G5101 have You forsakenG1459 MeG1473?”9
47WhenG1161 someG5100 of thoseG3588 standingG2476 thereG1563 heard thisG191, they saidG2036, “He is callingG5455 ElijahG2243.” 48OneG1520 ofG1537 themG846 quicklyG2112 ranG5143 andG2532 broughtG2983 a spongeG4699. He filledG4130 it with sour wineG3690,10 put it onG4060 a reedG2563, and held it up for Jesus to drinkG4222G846.11
49ButG1161 theG3588 othersG3062 saidG2036, “Leave Him aloneG863. Let us seeG3708 ifG1487 ElijahG2243 comesG2064 to saveG4982 HimG846.”12
50WhenG1161 JesusG2424 had cried outG2896 againG3825 in a loud voiceG3173G5456, He yielded upG863 His spiritG4151. 51At that momentG2532G2400 theG3588 veilG2665 of theG3588 templeG3485 was tornG4977 inG1519 twoG1417 fromG575 topG509 toG2193 bottomG2736. TheG3588 earthG1093 quakedG4579, andG2532 theG3588 rocksG4073 were splitG4977. 52TheG3588 tombsG3419 broke openG455, andG2532 the bodiesG4983 of manyG4183 saintsG40 who had fallen asleepG2837 were raisedG1453. 53AfterG3326 Jesus’ resurrectionG1454, when they had comeG1831 out ofG1537 theG3588 tombsG3419, they enteredG1525G1519 theG3588 holyG40 cityG4172 andG2532 appearedG1718 to manyG4183 people.
54WhenG1161 theG3588 centurionG1543 andG2532 thoseG3588 withG3326 himG846 who were guardingG5083 JesusG2424 sawG3708 theG3588 earthquakeG4578 andG2532 all thatG3588 had happenedG1096, they were terrifiedG5399G4970 and saidG3004, “TrulyG230 thisG3778 wasG1510 the SonG5207 of GodG2316.”
55AndG1161 manyG4183 womenG1135 wereG1510 thereG1563, watchingG2334 fromG575 a distanceG3113. They had followedG190 JesusG2424 fromG575 GalileeG1056 to ministerG1247 to HimG846. 56AmongG1722 them wereG1510 MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094, MaryG3137 theG3588 motherG3384 of JamesG2385 andG2532 JosephG2501, andG2532 theG3588 motherG3384 ofG3588 Zebedee’sG2199 sonsG5207.
The Burial of Jesus
(Isaiah 53:9–12; Mark 15:42–47; Luke 23:50–56; John 19:38–42)
57WhenG1161 it wasG1096 eveningG3798, there cameG2064 a richG4145 manG444 fromG575 ArimatheaG707 namedG5122 JosephG2501, whoG3739 himselfG846G2532 was a discipleG3100 of JesusG2424. 58HeG3778 wentG4334 to PilateG4091 to ask forG154 theG3588 bodyG4983 of JesusG2424, andG5119 PilateG4091 ordered thatG2753 it be given to himG591. 59SoG2532 JosephG2501 tookG2983 theG3588 bodyG4983, wrappedG1794 itG846 inG1722 a cleanG2513 linen clothG4616, 60andG2532 placedG5087 itG846 inG1722 his ownG846 newG2537 tombG3419 thatG3739 he had cutG2998 intoG1722 theG3588 rockG4073. ThenG2532 he rolledG4351 a greatG3173 stoneG3037 across theG3588 entranceG2374 to theG3588 tombG3419 and went awayG565. 61MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094 andG2532 theG3588 otherG243 MaryG3137 wereG1510 sittingG2521 thereG1563 oppositeG561 theG3588 tombG5028.
The Guards at the Tomb
TheG3588 next dayG1887, the oneG3748 afterG3326 Preparation DayG3904, theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG2532 PhariseesG5330 assembledG4863 beforeG4314 PilateG4091. 63“SirG2962,” they saidG3004, “we rememberG3403 thatG3754 whileG2089 He was aliveG2198 thatG1565 deceiverG4108 saidG2036, ‘AfterG3326 threeG5140 daysG2250 I will rise againG1453.’ 64SoG3767 give the order thatG2753 theG3588 tombG5028 be securedG805 untilG2193 theG3588 thirdG5154 dayG2250. OtherwiseG3361G4219, HisG846 disciplesG3101 may comeG2064 and steal Him awayG2813G846 andG2532 tellG2036 theG3588 peopleG2992 He has risenG1453 fromG575 theG3588 deadG3498. AndG2532 this lastG2078 deceptionG4106 would beG1510 worseG5501 than theG3588 firstG4413.”
65“You haveG2192 a guardG2892,” PilateG4091 saidG5346G846. “GoG5217, make the tomb as secureG805 asG5613 you knowG1492 how.” 66SoG1161 they wentG4198 and secured the tombG3588G5028G805 by sealingG4972 theG3588 stoneG3037 and posting theG3588 guardG2892.
