Matthew 27

American Standard Version

1NowG1161 when morning was comeG1096, all the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the eldersG4245 of the peopleG2992 tookG2983 counsel against JesusG2424 to putG2289 him to deathG2289: 2and they boundG1210 him, and ledG520 him awayG520, and deliveredG3860 him up to PilateG4091 the governorG2232.

3Then JudasG2455, who betrayedG3860 him, when he sawG3708 that he was condemnedG2632, repented himself, and brought back the thirtyG5144 pieces of silverG694 to the chiefG749 priestsG749 and eldersG4245, 4sayingG3004, I have sinnedG264 in that I betrayedG3860 innocent bloodG129. But they saidG3004, What is that to us? seeG3708 thou to it. 5And he castG4496 down the pieces of silverG694 into the sanctuary, and departedG565; and he wentG565 awayG565 and hanged himself. 6And the chiefG749 priestsG749 tookG2983 the pieces of silverG694, and saidG3004, It isG1510 not lawfulG1832 to putG906 them into the treasury, since it isG1510 the priceG5092 of bloodG129. 7And they tookG2983 counsel, and boughtG59 with them the potter’sG2763 fieldG68, to bury strangersG3581 in. 8Wherefore that fieldG68 was calledG2564, The fieldG68 of bloodG129, unto this dayG4594. 9Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through JeremiahG2408 the prophetG4396, sayingG3004, And they tookG2983 the thirtyG5144 pieces of silverG694, the priceG5092 of him that was priced, whom certain of the children of IsraelG2474 did priceG5092; 10and they gaveG1325 them for the potter’sG2763 fieldG68, as the LordG2962 appointed me.

11NowG1161 JesusG2424 stoodG2476 before the governorG2232: and the governorG2232 askedG1905 him, sayingG3004, Art thou the KingG935 of the JewsG2453? And JesusG2424 saidG3004 unto him, Thou sayest. 12And when he was accusedG2723 by the chiefG749 priestsG749 and eldersG4245, he answeredG611 nothing. 13ThenG5119 saith PilateG4091 unto him, Hearest thou not howG4214 manyG4214 things they witness against thee? 14And he gave him no answerG611, not evenG2532 to oneG1520 word: insomuch that the governorG2232 marvelled greatlyG3029. 15NowG1161 at the feastG1859 the governorG2232 was wont to releaseG630 unto the multitudeG3793 oneG1520 prisonerG1198, whom they wouldG2309. 16And they had thenG5119 a notable prisonerG1198, called BarabbasG912. 17When thereforeG3767 they were gatheredG4863 togetherG4863, PilateG4091 saidG3004 unto them, Whom will ye that I releaseG630 unto you? BarabbasG912, or JesusG2424 who is called ChristG5547? 18For he knew that for envyG5355 they had deliveredG3860 him up. 19And while he was sittingG2521 on the judgment-seat, his wifeG1135 sentG649 unto him, sayingG3004, Have thou nothingG3367 to do with that righteousG1342 manG1342; for I have sufferedG3958 manyG4183 thingsG4183 this dayG4594 in a dreamG3677 because of him. 20NowG1161 the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the eldersG4245 persuadedG3982 the multitudesG3793 that they should askG154 for BarabbasG912, and destroyG622 JesusG2424. 21But the governorG2232 answeredG611 and saidG3004 unto them, Which of the twoG1417 will ye that I releaseG630 unto you? And they saidG3004, BarabbasG912. 22PilateG4091 saith unto them, What thenG3767 shall I do unto JesusG2424 who is called ChristG5547? They all sayG3004, Let him be crucifiedG4717. 23And he saidG3004, WhyG5101, what evilG2556 hath he done? But they criedG2896 out exceedingly, sayingG3004, Let him be crucifiedG4717. 24So when PilateG4091 sawG3708 that he prevailed nothing, but ratherG3123 that a tumult wasG1510 arising, he tookG2983 waterG5204, and washed his handsG5495 before the multitudeG3793, sayingG3004, I amG1510 innocent of the bloodG129 of this righteous manG3778; seeG3708 ye to it. 25And all the peopleG2992 answeredG611 and saidG3004, His bloodG129 be on us, and on our childrenG5043. 26ThenG5119 releasedG630 he unto them BarabbasG912; but JesusG2424 he scourged and deliveredG3860 to be crucifiedG4717.

27ThenG5119 the soldiersG4757 of the governorG2232 tookG3880 JesusG2424 into the Prætorium, and gatheredG4863 unto him the wholeG3650 band. 28And they stripped him, and putG4060 on him a scarletG2847 robeG5511. 29And they platted a crownG4735 of thornsG173 and putG2007 it upon his headG2776, and a reedG2563 in his rightG1188 handG1188; and they kneeled downG1120 before him, and mockedG1702 him, sayingG3004, HailG5463, KingG935 of the JewsG2453! 30And they spatG1716 upon him, and tookG2983 the reedG2563 and smote him on the headG2776. 31And whenG3753 they had mockedG1702 him, they took off from him the robeG2440, and putG1746 on him his garmentsG2440, and ledG520 him awayG520 to crucifyG4717 him.

32And as they cameG1831 out, they foundG2147 a manG444 of CyreneG2956, SimonG4613 by nameG3686: him they compelled to goG1831 with them, that he might bearG142 his crossG4716.

33And when they wereG1510 comeG2064 unto a placeG5117 called GolgothaG1115, that isG1510 to sayG3004, The placeG5117 of a skullG2898, 34they gaveG1325 him wineG3631 to drinkG4095 mingled with gallG5521: and when he had tastedG1089 it, he would not drinkG4095. 35And when they had crucifiedG4717 him, they parted his garmentsG2440 among them, castingG906 lotsG2819; 36and they satG2521 and watched him there. 37And they set up over his headG2776 his accusation writtenG1125, THIS ISG1510 JESUSG2424 THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWSG2453. 38Then are there crucifiedG4717 with him twoG1417 robbersG3027, oneG1520 on the rightG1188 handG1188 and oneG1520 on the left. 39And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their headsG2776, 40and sayingG3004, Thou that destroyest the templeG3485, and buildest it in threeG5140 daysG2250, saveG4982 thyself: if thou art the SonG5207 of GodG2316, comeG2597 down from the crossG4716. 41In like manner alsoG2532 the chiefG749 priestsG749 mockingG1702 him, with the scribesG1122 and eldersG4245, saidG3004, 42He savedG4982 othersG243; himself he cannot saveG4982. He isG1510 the KingG935 of IsraelG2474; let him nowG3568 comeG2597 down from the crossG4716, and we will believeG4100 on him. 43He trusteth on GodG2316; let him deliverG4506 him nowG3568, if he desireth him: for he saidG3004, I amG1510 the SonG5207 of GodG2316. 44And the robbersG3027 alsoG2532 that were crucified with him cast upon him the sameG846 reproach.

45NowG1161 from the sixthG1623 hourG5610 there was darknessG4655 over all the landG1093 until the ninth hourG5610. 46And about the ninth hourG5610 JesusG2424 cried with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, sayingG3004, EliG2241, EliG2241, lama sabachthaniG4518? that isG1510, My GodG2316, my GodG2316, why hast thou forsakenG1459 me? 47And some of them that stoodG2476 there, when they heardG191 it, saidG3004, This manG3778 calleth ElijahG2243. 48And straightway oneG1520 of them ranG5143, and tookG2983 a spongeG4699, and filledG4130 it with vinegar, and putG4060 it on a reedG2563, and gaveG4222 him to drinkG4222. 49And the restG3062 saidG3004, Let be; let us seeG3708 whether ElijahG2243 cometh to saveG4982 him. 50And JesusG2424 criedG2896 againG3825 with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, and yielded up his spiritG4151. 51And beholdG2400, the veilG2665 of the templeG3485 was rent in twoG1417 from the topG509 to the bottomG2736; and the earthG1093 did quake; and the rocksG4073 were rent; 52and the tombsG3419 were openedG455; and manyG4183 bodiesG4983 of the saintsG40 that had fallen asleepG2837 were raisedG1453; 53and comingG1831 forthG1831 out of the tombsG3419 after his resurrection they enteredG1525 into the holyG40 cityG4172 and appeared unto manyG4183. 54NowG1161 the centurionG1543, and they that wereG1510 with him watching JesusG2424, when they sawG3708 the earthquakeG4578, and the thingsG3778 that wereG1510 done, fearedG5399 exceedinglyG4970, sayingG3004, TrulyG230 this wasG1510 the SonG5207 of GodG2316. 55And manyG4183 womenG1135 wereG1510 there beholding from afar, who had followedG190 JesusG2424 from GalileeG1056, ministeringG1247 unto him: 56among whom wasG1510 MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094, and MaryG3137 the motherG3384 of JamesG2385 and Joses, and the motherG3384 of the sonsG5207 of ZebedeeG2199.

57And when evenG2532 was comeG2064, there cameG2064 a richG4145 manG444 from Arimathæa, named JosephG2501, who alsoG2532 himself was Jesus’G2424 disciple: 58this manG3778 went to PilateG4091, and askedG154 for the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424. ThenG5119 PilateG4091 commandedG2753 it to be givenG591 up. 59And JosephG2501 tookG2983 the bodyG4983, and wrapped it in a cleanG2513 linenG4616 clothG4616, 60and laidG5087 it in his own newG2537 tombG3419, which he had hewn out in the rockG4073: and he rolledG4351 a greatG3173 stoneG3037 to the doorG2374 of the tombG3419, and departedG565. 61And MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094 wasG1510 there, and the otherG243 MaryG3137, sittingG2521 over against the sepulchre.

62NowG1161 on the morrow, which isG1510 the dayG1887 after the PreparationG3904, the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the PhariseesG5330 wereG1510 gatheredG4863 togetherG4863 unto PilateG4091, 63sayingG3004, SirG2962, we rememberG3403 that that deceiverG4108 saidG3004 while he was yetG2089 aliveG2198, After threeG5140 daysG2250 I riseG1453 again. 64Command thereforeG3767 that the sepulchre beG1510 made sure until the thirdG5154 dayG2250, lest haply his disciplesG3101 comeG2064 and stealG2813 him awayG575, and sayG3004 unto the peopleG2992, He isG1510 risenG1453 from the deadG3498: and the lastG2078 errorG4106 will beG1510 worse than the firstG4413. 65PilateG4091 saidG5346 unto them, Ye have a guardG2892: goG5217, make it as sure as ye can. 66So they wentG4198, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stoneG3037, the guardG2892 being with them.
