Psalms 42

Thirsting for God in Trouble and Exile.

For the music director. A Possibly Contemplative; or Didactic; or Skillful PsalmMaskil of the sons of Korah.

1As the deer 1pants for the water brooks, So my soul 23pants for You, God.2My soul 4thirsts for God, for the 5living God; When shall I come and 67appear before God?3My 8tears have been my food day and night, While they 9say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”4I remember these things and 10pour out my soul within me. For I 11used to go over with the multitude and walk them to the house of God, With a voice of 12joy and thanksgiving, a multitude celebrating a festival.

513Why are you 1415in despair, my soul? And why are you 16restless within me? 17Wait for God, for I will 18again praise 19Him For the 2021help of His 22presence, my God.6My soul is 23in despair within me; Therefore I 24remember You from 25the land of the Jordan And the 26peaks of 27Hermon, from Mount Mizar.7Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls; All Your 28breakers and Your waves have passed over me.8The Lord will 29send His goodness in the daytime; And His song will be with me 30in the night, A prayer to 31the God of my life.

9I will say to God 32my rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go about 33mourning 34because of the 35oppression of the enemy?”10As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries taunt me, While they 36say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”1137Why are you 38in despair, my soul? And why are you restless within me? Wait for God, for I will again praise 39Him For the 40help of His presence, my God.
