Psalms 38

Prayer of a Suffering Penitent.

A Psalm of David, for a memorial.

1Lord, 1do not rebuke me in Your wrath, And do not punish me in Your burning anger.2For Your 2arrows have sunk deep into me, And 3Your hand has pressed down on me.3There is 4no healthy part in my flesh 5because of Your indignation; There is no health 6in my bones because of my sin.4For my 7guilty deeds have gone over my head; Like a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.5My 8wounds grow foul and fester Because of 9my foolishness.6I am bent over and 10greatly bowed down; I 11go in mourning all day long.7For my 12sides are filled with 13burning, And there is 14no healthy part in my flesh.8I feel 15faint and 16badly crushed; I 17 18groan because of the 19agitation of my heart.

9Lord, all 20my desire is 21before You; And my 22sighing is not hidden from You.10My heart throbs, 23my strength fails me; And the 24light of my eyes, even 25that 26has gone from me.11My 27 28loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague; And my kinsmen 29stand far away.12Those who 30seek my life 31lay snares for me; And those who 32seek to injure me have 33threatened destruction, And they 34plot deception all day long.

13But I, like a person who is deaf, do not hear; And I am like a 35person who cannot speak, who does not open his mouth.14Yes, I am like a person who does not hear, And in whose mouth are no arguments.15For 36I wait for You, Lord; You 37will answer, Lord my God.16For I said, “May they not rejoice over me, Who, when my foot slips, 38would exalt themselves over me.”17For I am 39ready to fall, And 40my 41sorrow is continually before me.18For I 42admit my guilt; I am full of 43anxiety because of my sin.19But my 44enemies are vigorous and 45strong, And those who wrongfully 46hate me are many.20And those who 47repay evil for good, They 48become my enemies, because I follow what is good.21Do not abandon me, Lord; My God, 49do not be far from me!22 50Hurry to help me, Lord, 51my salvation!
