Appeal to Unity

1Paul, 1called as an apostle of Jesus Christ 2by 3the will of God, and our 4brother 5Sosthenes,

2To 6the church of God which is in 7Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, 8saints 9by calling, with all who in every place 10call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

311Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

412I thank 13my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, 5that in everything you were 14enriched in Him, in all 15speech and 16all knowledge, 6just as 17the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed 18in you, 7so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you eagerly 19await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 820who will also 21confirm you to the end, blameless on 22the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 923God is faithful, through whom you were 24called into 25fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

10Now 26I urge you, 27brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all 28agree and that there be no 2930divisions among you, but that you be 31made complete in 32the same mind and in the same judgment. 11For I have been informed concerning you, my brothers and sisters, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. 12Now I mean this, that 33each one of you is saying, “I am 34with Paul,” 35or “I am 36with 37Apollos,” 38or “I am 39with 4041Cephas,” 42or “I am 43with Christ.” 1344Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you 45baptized 46in the name of Paul? 14I am thankful that I 47baptized none of you except 48Crispus and 49Gaius, 15so that no one would say you were baptized 50in my name! 16But I did baptize the 51household of Stephanas also; beyond that, I do not know if I baptized anyone else. 1752For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, 53not with 54cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made of no effect.

The Wisdom of God

18For the word of the cross is 55foolishness to 56those who 57are perishing, but to us who 58are being saved it is 59the power of God. 19For it is written: “60I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the understanding of those who have understanding, I will confound.” 2061Where is the wise person? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of 62this age? Has God not 63made foolish the wisdom of 64the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God 65the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, 66God 67was pleased through the 68foolishness of the 69message preached to 70save those who believe. 22For indeed 71Jews ask for 72signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23but we preach 7374Christ crucified, 75to Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles 76foolishness, 24but to those who are 77the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ 78the power of God and 79the wisdom of God. 25For the 80foolishness of God is wiser than mankind, and 81the weakness of God is stronger than mankind.

26For 82consider your 83calling, brothers and sisters, that there were 84not many wise according to 85the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; 27but 86God has chosen the foolish things of 87the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of 88the world to shame the things which are strong, 28and the 89insignificant things of 90the world and the despised God has chosen, 91the things that are not, so that He may 92nullify the things that are, 29so that 93no 94human may boast before God. 30But it is 95due to Him that you are in 96Christ Jesus, who became to us 97wisdom from God, 98and 99righteousness and 100sanctification, and 101redemption, 31so that, just as it is written: “102Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
