Titus Chapter 1
New American Standard Bible 2020
Salutation
1Paul, 1a bond-servant of God and an 2apostle of Jesus Christ, 3for the faith of those 4chosen of God and 5the knowledge of the truth which is 6according to godliness, 2in 7the hope of eternal life, which God, 8who cannot lie, 9promised 1011long ages ago, 3but 12at the proper time revealed His word in 13the proclamation 14with which I was entrusted 15according to the commandment of 16God our Savior;
4To 17Titus, 18my true 19son 20in a 21common faith: 22Grace and peace from God the Father and 23Christ Jesus our Savior.
Qualifications of Elders
5For this reason I left you in 24Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 25appoint 26elders in every city as I directed you, 6namely, 27if any man is beyond reproach, the 28husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of 29indecent behavior or 30rebellion. 7For the 3132overseer must be beyond reproach as 33God’s steward, not 34self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 35overindulging in wine, not 36a bully, 37not greedy for money, 8but 38hospitable, 39loving what is good, self-controlled, righteous, holy, disciplined, 940holding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to 41exhort in 42sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.
1043For there are many 44rebellious people, 45empty talkers and deceivers, especially 46those of the circumcision, 11who must be silenced because they are upsetting 47whole families, teaching 48things they should not teach 49for the sake of 50dishonest gain. 12One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “51Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13This testimony is true. For this reason 52reprimand them 53severely so that they may be 54sound in the faith, 14not paying attention to Jewish 55myths and 56commandments of men who 57turn away from the truth. 1558To the pure, all things are pure; but 59to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their 60mind and their conscience are defiled. 1661They profess to know God, but by their deeds they 62deny Him, being 63detestable and 64disobedient and 65worthless 66for any good deed.
