Song of Songs 1
The Young Shulammite Bride and Jerusalem’s Daughters
The speaker identifications are not from the Hebrew text nor the Septuagint, but reflect an ancient tradition which appears in some manuscripts. The Bride
1The 1Song of 2Songs, which is Solomon’s.
2“May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your 3love is 4sweeter than wine.3Your 5oils have a pleasing fragrance, Your 6name is like 7purified oil; Therefore the 89young women love you.
The Bride
4Draw me after you and let’s run together! The 10king has brought me into his chambers.” The Chorus “We will rejoice in you and be joyful; We will praise your 11love more than wine. Rightly do they love you.”
5“I am black and 12beautiful, You 13daughters of Jerusalem, Like the 14tents of 15Kedar, Like the curtains of Solomon.6Do not stare at me because I am 16dark, For the sun has tanned me. My 17mother’s sons were angry with me; They made me 18caretaker of the vineyards, But I have not taken care of my own vineyard.7Tell me, you 19whom my soul loves, Where do you 20pasture your flock, Where do you have it 21lie down at noon? For why should I be like one who 22veils herself Beside the flocks of your 23companions?”
Solomon, the Lover, Speaks
8“If you yourself do not know, 24Most beautiful among women, Go out on the trail of the flock, And pasture your young goats By the tents of the shepherds.
9“25To me, 26my darling, you are like My 27mare among the chariots of Pharaoh.
The Chorus
10Your 28cheeks are delightful with jewelry, Your neck with strings of 29beads.”
The Bride
11“We will make for you jewelry of gold With beads of silver.”
12“While the king was at his table, My 3031perfume gave forth its fragrance.13My beloved is to me a pouch of 32myrrh Which lies all night between my breasts.
The Groom
14My beloved is to me a cluster of 33henna blossoms In the vineyards of 34Engedi.”
The Bride
15“3536How beautiful you are, my darling, 37How beautiful you are! Your 38eyes are like doves.”
16“39How handsome you are, 40my beloved, And so delightful! Indeed, our bed is luxuriant!17The beams of our house are 41cedars, Our rafters, 42junipers.
