Matthew 1
The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah
1The 1record of the genealogy of 2Jesus the 3Messiah, 4the son of David, 5the son of Abraham:
2Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob fathered 6Judah and his brothers. 3Judah fathered Perez and Zerah by Tamar, 7Perez fathered Hezron, and Hezron fathered 8Ram. 4Ram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon. 5Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, and Obed fathered Jesse. 6Jesse fathered David the king.
David 9fathered Solomon by 10her who had been the wife of Uriah. 7Solomon 11fathered Rehoboam, Rehoboam fathered Abijah, and Abijah fathered 12Asa. 8Asa fathered Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat fathered 13Joram, and Joram fathered Uzziah. 9Uzziah fathered 14Jotham, Jotham fathered Ahaz, and Ahaz fathered Hezekiah. 10Hezekiah fathered Manasseh, Manasseh fathered 15Amon, and Amon 16fathered Josiah. 11Josiah fathered 17Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the 18deportation to Babylon.
12After the 19deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah fathered 20Shealtiel, and Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel. 13Zerubbabel fathered 21Abihud, Abihud fathered Eliakim, and Eliakim fathered Azor. 14Azor fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Achim, and Achim fathered Eliud. 15Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, and Matthan fathered Jacob. 16Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, 22who is called the 23Messiah.
17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the 24deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the 25deportation to Babylon to the 26Messiah, fourteen generations.
Conception and Birth of Jesus
18Now the birth of Jesus the 27Messiah was as follows: when His 28mother Mary had been 29betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was 30found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to 3132send her away secretly. 20But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “33Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for 34the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a Son; and 35you shall name Him Jesus, for 36He 37will save His people from their sins.” 22Now all this 38took place so that what was 39spoken by the Lord through 40the prophet would be fulfilled: 23“41Behold, the virgin will 4243conceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name Him 44Immanuel,” which translated means, “45God with us.” 24And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 2546but kept her a virgin until she 47gave birth to a Son; and 48he named Him Jesus.
