1 Timothy 1
Correcting False Teaching
1Paul, 1an apostle of 2Christ Jesus 3according to the commandment of 4God our Savior, and of 5Christ Jesus, who is our 6hope,
2To 7Timothy, 8my true 9son in the faith: 10Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and 11Christ Jesus our Lord.
3Just as I urged you 12upon my departure for 13Macedonia, to remain on at 14Ephesus so that you would instruct certain people not to 15teach strange doctrines, 4nor to 16pay attention to 17myths and endless 18genealogies, which give rise to useless 19speculation rather than 20advance 21the plan of God, which is by faith, so I urge you now. 5But the goal of our 2223instruction is love 24from a pure heart, from a 25good conscience, and from a sincere 26faith. 6Some people have strayed from these things and have turned aside to 27fruitless discussion, 728wanting to be 29teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
8But we know that 30the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9realizing the fact that 31law is not made for a righteous person but for those who are lawless and 32rebellious, for the 33ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and 34worldly, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for the 3536sexually immoral, 37homosexuals, 3839slave traders, 40liars, 41perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to 42sound teaching, 11according to 43the glorious gospel of 44the blessed God, with which I have been 45entrusted.
Paul’s Testimony
12I thank 46Christ Jesus our Lord, who has 47strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, 48putting me into service, 13even though I was previously a blasphemer and a 49persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was 50shown mercy because 51I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14and the 52grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the 53faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. 1554It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that 55Christ Jesus came into the world to 56save sinners, among whom 57I am foremost. 16Yet for this reason I 58found mercy, so that in me as the foremost sinner Jesus Christ might 59demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those 60who would believe in Him for eternal life. 17Now to the 61King 62eternal, 63immortal, 64invisible, the 65only God, 66be honor and glory 67forever and ever. Amen.
18This 68command I entrust to you, Timothy, 69my 70son, in accordance with the 71prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you 72fight the good fight, 19keeping 73faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to 7475their faith. 2076Among these are 77Hymenaeus and 78Alexander, whom I have 79handed over to Satan, so that they will be 80taught not to blaspheme.
