Context of Psalms 88:11
9My eye grows dim from misery; I have called upon You every day, Lord; I have spread out my hands to You. 10Will You perform wonders for the dead? Or will the departed spirits rise and praise You? Selah Will Your graciousness be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon? 12Will Your wonders be made known in the darkness? And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? 13But I, Lord, have cried out to You for help, And in the morning my prayer comes before You.

Commentaries on Psalms 88:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Or thy faithfulness in destruction? - Faithfulness in God refers as well to his fulfilling his threatenings as to his keeping his promises. The wicked are threatened with such punishments as their crimes have deserved; but annihilation is no punishment. God therefore does not intend to annihilate the wicked; their destruction cannot declare the faithfulness of God.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Shall thy loving-kindness be declared in the grave? - Thy goodness; thy mercy. Shall anyone make it known there? shall it there be celebrated? Or thy faithfulness in destruction? - In the place where destruction seems to reign; where human hopes perish; where the body moulders back to dust. Shall anyone there dwell on the fidelity - the truthfulness - of God, in such a way as to honor him? It is implied here that, according to the views then entertained…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-18Verses 10-18 Departed souls may declare God's faithfulness, justice, and lovingkindness; but deceased bodies can neither receive God's favours in comfort, nor return them in praise. The psalmist resolved to continue in prayer, and the more so, because deliverance did not come speedily. Though our prayers are not soon answered, yet we must not give over praying. The greater our troubles, the more earnest and serious we should be in prayer. Nothing grieves…Read the comment
