Genesis 1

The Creation

11In the beginning 2God 3created the heavens and the earth. 2And the earth was a 45formless and desolate emptiness, and 6darkness was over the 7surface of the deep, and 8the Spirit of God 9was hovering over the 10surface of the waters. 3Then 11God said, “12Let there be light”; and there was light. 4God saw that the light was 13good; and God 14separated the light from the darkness. 515God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And 16there was evening and there was morning, one day.

6Then God said, “Let there be 17an 18expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7God made the 19expanse, and separated 20the waters that were below the 21expanse from the waters 22that were above the 23expanse; and it was so. 8God called the 24expanse “heaven.” And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

9Then God said, “25Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let 26the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10And God called the dry land “earth,” and the 27gathering of the waters He called “seas”; and God saw that it was good. 11Then God said, “Let the earth sprout 2829vegetation, 30plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit according to 31their kind 32with seed in them”; and it was so. 12The earth produced 33vegetation, 34plants yielding seed according to 35their kind, and trees bearing fruit 36with seed in them, according to 37their kind; and God saw that it was good. 13And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.

14Then God said, “Let there be 3839lights in the 4041expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and they shall 42serve as 43signs and for 44seasons, and for days and years; 15and they 45shall serve as lights in the 46expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16God made the two great lights, the 47greater light 48to govern the day, and the lesser light 49to govern the night; He made 50the stars also. 1751God placed them in the 52expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18and 53to 54govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

20Then God said, “Let the waters 55teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth 56in the open 57expanse of the heavens.” 21And God created 58the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind; and God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

2459Then God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to 60their kind: livestock and crawling things and animals of the earth according to 61their kind”; and it was so. 25God made the 62animals of the earth according to 63their kind, and the livestock according to 64their kind, and everything that crawls on the ground according to its kind; and God saw that it was good.

26Then God said, “65Let 66Us make 67mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and 68let them 69rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.” 27So God created man 70in His own image, in the image of God He created him; 71male and female He created them. 28God blessed them; and God said to them, “72Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that 73moves on the earth.” 29Then God said, “Behold, 74I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the 75surface of all the earth, and every tree 76which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30and 77to every animal of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to everything that 78moves on the earth 79which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. 31And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very 80good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
