Psalms 40
God Sustains His Servant.
For the music director. A Psalm of David.
1I 1waited 2patiently for the Lord; And He reached down to me and 3heard my cry.2He brought me up out of the 4pit of 5destruction, out of the mud; And 6He set my feet on a rock, 7making my footsteps firm.3He put a 8new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will 9see and fear And will trust in the Lord.
4How 10blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust, And 11has not turned to the 12proud, nor to those who 13become involved in falsehood.5Many, Lord my God, are 14the wonders which You have done, And Your 15thoughts toward us; There is no one to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, They 16would be too numerous to count.
617You have not desired 18sacrifice and meal offering; You have 19opened my ears; You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.7Then I said, “Behold, I have come; It is 20written of me in the scroll of the book.821I delight to do Your will, my God; 22Your Law is within my 23heart.”
9I have 24proclaimed good news of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will 25not restrain my lips, Lord, 26You know.10I have 27not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have 28spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your mercy and Your truth from the great congregation.
11You, Lord, will not withhold Your compassion from me; 29Your 30mercy and Your truth will continually watch over me.12For evils beyond number have 31surrounded me; My 32guilty deeds have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are 33more numerous than the hairs of my head, And my 34heart has 35failed me.
1336Be pleased, Lord, to rescue me; 37Hurry, Lord, to help me.14May those be 38ashamed and humiliated together Who 39seek my 40life to destroy it; May those be turned back and dishonored Who delight 41in my hurt.15May those 42be 43appalled because of their shame Who 44say to me, “Aha, aha!”1645May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; May those who love Your salvation continually 46say, “The Lord be exalted!”17But 47I am afflicted and needy; 48May the Lord be mindful of me. You are my help and my savior; Do not delay, my God.
