Philippians 1
Thanksgiving
11Paul and 2Timothy, 3bond-servants of 4Christ Jesus,
To 5all the 67saints in Christ Jesus who are in 8Philippi, 9including the 10overseers and 11deacons: 212Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
313I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4always offering prayer with joy in 14my every prayer for you all, 5in view of your 1516participation in the 17gospel 18from the first day until now. 6For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work 19among you will complete it 20by 21the day of Christ Jesus. 722For 23it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I 24have you in my heart, since both in my 2526imprisonment and in the 27defense and confirmation of the 28gospel, you all are 29partakers of grace with me. 8For 30God is my witness, how I long for you all with the 31affection of 32Christ Jesus. 9And this I pray, that 33your love may overflow still more and more in 34real knowledge and all discernment, 10so that you may 3536discover the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and blameless for 37the day of Christ; 11having been filled with the 38fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God.
The Gospel Is Preached
12Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that my circumstances 39have turned out for the greater progress of the 40gospel, 13so that my 4142imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the 43praetorian guard and to 44everyone else, 14and that most of the brothers and sisters, 45trusting in the Lord because of my 4647imprisonment, have 48far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. 1549Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even 50from envy and strife, but some also 51from goodwill; 16the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the 52gospel; 17the former proclaim Christ 53out of selfish ambition 54rather than from pure motives, thinking that they are causing me distress in my 5556imprisonment. 18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice.
But not only that, I also will rejoice, 19for I know that this will turn out for my 57deliverance 58through your 59prayers and the provision of 60the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20according to my 61eager expectation and 62hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with 63all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be 64exalted in my body, 65whether by life or by death.
To Live Is Christ
21For to me, 66to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 2267But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean 68fruitful labor for me; and I do not know 69which to choose. 23But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the 70desire to depart and 71be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sakes. 2572Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy 73in the faith, 26so that your 74pride in Christ Jesus may be abundant because of me by my coming to you again.
27Only conduct yourselves in a manner 75worthy of the 76gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear about you that you are 77standing firm in 78one spirit, with one 79mind 80striving together for the faith of the gospel; 28and in no way alarmed by your opponents--which is a 81sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and this too, from God. 29For to you 82it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to 83suffer on His behalf, 30experiencing the same 84conflict which 85you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
