Context of Psalms 72:8
6May he come down like rain upon the mown grass, Like showers that water the earth. 7May the righteous flourish in his days, As well as an abundance of peace, until the moon is no more. May he also rule from sea to sea, And from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth. 9May the nomads of the desert bow before him, And his enemies lick the dust. 10May the kings of Tarshish and of the islands bring gifts; May the kings of Sheba and Seba offer tributes.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8He shall have dominion also from sea to sea - The best comment on this, as it refers to Solomon, may be found in 1 Kings 4:21, 1 Kings 4:24; : "And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms, from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt; for he had dominion over all on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river; and he had peace on all sides round about him." Solomon, it appears…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8He shall have dominion also from sea to sea - There is probably an allusion here to the promise in Exodus 23:31: “And I will set thy bounds from the Red Sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river.” This was the original promise in regard to the bounds of the promised land. A promise similar to this occurs also in Genesis 15:18: “In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 2-17Verses 2-17 This is a prophecy of the kingdom of Christ; many passages in it cannot be applied to the reign of Solomon. There were righteousness and peace at first in the administration of his government; but, before the end of his reign, there were troubles and unrighteousness. The kingdom here spoken of is to last as long as the sun, but Solomon's was soon at an end. Even the Jewish expositors understood it of the kingdom of the Messiah. Observe many…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9from sea to sea: This phrase represents the entire world. Solomon's kingdom stretched from the Euphrates River in the east to the Philistine territory in the west (1 Kings 4:21; see Psalms 80:8–11; 89:19–25), where the Mediterranean Sea appeared to be at the ends of the earth (see 2:8). Everyone will bow before this king, including desert nomads (Psalm 72:9), his enemies, and all the world's kings (see Micah 7:17).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. The foreign nations mentioned (Psa 72:9, 10) could not be included in the limits, if designed to indicate the boundaries of Solomon's kingdom. The terms, though derived from those used (Ex 23:31; De 11:24) to denote the possessions of Israel, must have a wider sense. Thus, "ends of the earth" is never used of Palestine, but always of the world (compare Margin).Read the comment
