Context of Psalms 72:8
6May the king be a blessing to his people, like rain that falls on grass that lies in the fields. May he be like rain that brings water to the soil. 7While he rules as king, those people who serve God will do well. There will be peace in all the land, for as long as the moon remains in the sky. May the king rule everywhere, from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates river to the ends of the earth. 9Then people who live in the desert will bend down to respect him. His enemies will fall down with their faces in the dust. 10Kings from Spain and from other far places will pay taxes to him. Kings from Sheba and from Seba will bring gifts to him.

Commentaries on Psalms 72:8
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8He shall have dominion also from sea to sea - The best comment on this, as it refers to Solomon, may be found in 1 Kings 4:21, 1 Kings 4:24; : "And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms, from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt; for he had dominion over all on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river; and he had peace on all sides round about him." Solomon, it appears…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8He shall have dominion also from sea to sea - There is probably an allusion here to the promise in Exodus 23:31: “And I will set thy bounds from the Red Sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river.” This was the original promise in regard to the bounds of the promised land. A promise similar to this occurs also in Genesis 15:18: “In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 2-17Verses 2-17 This is a prophecy of the kingdom of Christ; many passages in it cannot be applied to the reign of Solomon. There were righteousness and peace at first in the administration of his government; but, before the end of his reign, there were troubles and unrighteousness. The kingdom here spoken of is to last as long as the sun, but Solomon's was soon at an end. Even the Jewish expositors understood it of the kingdom of the Messiah. Observe many…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9from sea to sea: This phrase represents the entire world. Solomon's kingdom stretched from the Euphrates River in the east to the Philistine territory in the west (1 Kings 4:21; see Psalms 80:8–11; 89:19–25), where the Mediterranean Sea appeared to be at the ends of the earth (see 2:8). Everyone will bow before this king, including desert nomads (Psalm 72:9), his enemies, and all the world's kings (see Micah 7:17).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. The foreign nations mentioned (Psa 72:9, 10) could not be included in the limits, if designed to indicate the boundaries of Solomon's kingdom. The terms, though derived from those used (Ex 23:31; De 11:24) to denote the possessions of Israel, must have a wider sense. Thus, "ends of the earth" is never used of Palestine, but always of the world (compare Margin).Read the comment
