Context of Psalms 19:5

3There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. 4Their line has gone out into all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun, Which is like a groom coming out of his chamber; It rejoices like a strong person to run his course. 6Its rising is from one end of the heavens, And its circuit to the other end of them; And there is nothing hidden from its heat. 7The Law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

Commentaries on Psalms 19:5

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Which is as a bridegroom, etc. - This is a reference to the rising of the sun, as the following verse is to the setting. He makes his appearance above the horizon with splendor and majesty; every creature seems to rejoice at his approach; and during the whole of his course, through his whole circuit, his apparent revolution from east to west, and from one tropic to the same again, no part of the earth is deprived of its proper proportion of light and…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber - That is, when he rises in the morning. He rises from the darkness of the night, and comes forth as the bridegroom comes out of the chamber where he has slept. The allusion is to the bright, and joyful, and cheerful aspect of the rising sun. The image of the bridegroom is employed because we associate with a bridegroom the idea of hilarity, cheerfulness, joy. The essential image is that the sun seems to…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-14God's wisdom is clearly shown in many places: It appears in the heavens (Psalm 19:1–4), in nature (Psalm 19:4–6), in his teachings (Psalm 19:7–11), and in the life of the psalmist (Psalm 19:12–14) Like Psalm 8, this hymn uses creation to lead people to reflect on God. It offers a calm moment after the intense prayers and victory songs in earlier psalms. The psalm begins with creation as a source of wisdom. It then moves to God’s word as the perfect source…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-65-6. The sun, as the most glorious heavenly body, is specially used to illustrate the sentiment; and his vigorous, cheerful, daily, and extensive course, and his reviving heat (including light), well display the wondrous wisdom of his Maker.Read the comment
