Yet the works of creation testify of God’s power and greatness. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.” [Psalm 19:1.] Those who take the written word as their counselor, will find in science an aid to understand God.

Now we want to bring before you something in regard to the work that was done in Ephesus. That work was the burning of the magic books. You will see that in every place God works after the manner that He can best reach the people. When He came to reveal Christ to the Magi, He did not come to them as He did to the shepherds on the plains of Bethlehem. The wise men were reading the works of God in the heavens. “The heavens declare the glory of God” [Psalm 19:1], and God comes to them to educate them in the very manner that He could best reach them. He has a star, a wonderful star, to appear to them. Angels of God hover in the heavens in the shape of a star, and they see the star. As they begin to understand that something strange is taking place, they begin to move, and the star moves before them.

The Lord is good, merciful, and forbearing. The works of creation reveal His character. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handywork.” [Psalm 19:1.] It is man, formed in the image of God, who does not magnify the Lord of Hosts in contemplating the love of God and the perfection of His law. We may now see that the transgression of the law of God has been bringing upon the world God’s displeasure. If he will, man may read in the natural world nature’s testimony to the result of man’s transgression of the law of Jehovah.

The natural things of God’s creation have an influence, and in their very silence is eloquence. They respond to the voice and power of God, and the lessons they teach are that man who has reasoning faculties may have a conception of God’s work, His wisdom, and His care, expressed in the smallest flower that grows. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork.” [Psalm 19:1.]

This morning I was reading the nineteenth psalm and the psalms following, and I thought, What beautiful lessons these psalms teach. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork.” [Psalm 19:1.] What is the matter with us? We have lost sight of God. The world has lost the knowledge of God. Our work is to bring the knowledge within the reach of all we possibly can. Our message is, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” [John 1:29.]

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork.” [Psalm 19:1.] God’s power and glory, revealed in the works of creation, are so manifest that the Psalmist calls a man a fool for saying in his heart, There is no God. That there is a God needs no proof from man. Men darken counsel by their weak suppositions.

The psalmist says: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard” (Psalm 19:1-3). Some may suppose that these grand things in the natural world are God. They are not God. All these wonders in the heavens are only doing the work appointed them. They are the Lord’s agencies. God is the superintendent, as well as the Creator, of all things. The Divine Being is engaged in upholding the things that He has created. The same hand that holds the mountains and balances them in position, guides the worlds in their mysterious march around the sun.

These words all the students in our school need to appreciate. Then they can pray intelligently. “Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins: Let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.” [Verses 12-14.]

The youth have talents, but unless they shall consecrate these talents to God, they cannot speak intelligently of the 19th Psalm. When as students they shall understand the infinite sacrifice made for them by the only begotten Son of God, they will realize their responsibility as servants of Jesus Christ. If it were only understood, an altogether purer and more healthful atmosphere would surround the souls of those who take the names of Christians.

It was the privilege of the Jewish nation to represent the character of God as it had been revealed to Moses. In answer to the prayer of Moses, “Show me Thy glory,” the Lord promised, “I will make all My goodness pass before thee.” Exodus 33:18, 19. “And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” Exodus 34:6, 7. This was the fruit that God desired from His people. In the purity of their characters, in the holiness of their lives, in their mercy and loving-kindness and compassion, they were to show that “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7.

In this age of the world, when Satan is seeking, through manifold agencies, to blind the eyes of men and women to the binding claims of the law of God, there is need of men who can cause many to “tremble at the commandment of our God.” Ezra 10:3. There is need of true reformers, who will point transgressors to the great Lawgiver and teach them that “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7. There is need of men mighty in the Scriptures, men whose every word and act exalts the statutes of Jehovah, men who seek to strengthen faith. Teachers are needed, oh, so much, who will inspire hearts with reverence and love for the Scriptures.

Sinners Brought Into Harmony With the Law, February 2

RC 47.4

“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul” (Psalm 19:7). Without the law, men have no just conception of the purity and holiness of God or of their own guilt and uncleanness. They have no true conviction of sin and feel no need of repentance. Not seeing their lost condition as violators of God’s law, they do not realize their need of the atoning blood of Christ. The hope of salvation is accepted without a radical change of heart or reformation of life. Thus superficial conversions abound, and multitudes are joined to the church who have never been united to Christ.... By the Word and the Spirit of God are opened to men the great principles of righteousness embodied in His law.—The Great Controversy, 467-469.

God’s Law of Love Perfected in Us, February 28

RC 73.5

Jesus said, Be perfect as your Father is perfect. If you are the children of God you are partakers of His nature, and you cannot but be like Him. Every child lives by the life of his father. If you are God’s children, begotten by His Spirit, you live by the life of God. In Christ dwells “all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9); and the life of Jesus is made manifest “in our mortal flesh” (2 Corinthians 4:11). That life in you will produce the same character and manifest the same works as it did in Him. Thus you will be in harmony with every precept of His law; for “the law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul” (Psalm 19:7, margin). Through love “the righteousness of the law” will be “fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Romans 8:4).—Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, 76-78.

1SM 217.1

Says the psalmist, “The law of the Lord is perfect” (Psalm 19:7). How wonderful in its simplicity, its comprehensiveness and perfection, is the law of Jehovah! It is so brief that we can easily commit every precept to memory, and yet so far-reaching as to express the whole will of God, and to take cognizance, not only of the outward actions, but of the thoughts and intents, the desires and emotions, of the heart. Human laws cannot do this. They can deal with the outward actions only. A man may be a transgressor, and yet conceal his misdeeds from human eyes; he may be a criminal—a thief, a murderer, or an adulterer—but so long as he is not discovered, the law cannot condemn him as guilty. The law of God takes note of the jealousy, envy, hatred, malignity, revenge, lust, and ambition that surge through the soul, but have not found expression in outward action, because the opportunity, not the will, has been wanting. And these sinful emotions will be brought into the account in the day when “God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14).

8T 207.1

By His life and death Christ taught that only in obedience to God’s commandments can man find safety and true greatness. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7. God’s law is a transcript of His character. It was given to man in the beginning as the standard of obedience. In succeeding ages this law was lost sight of. Hundreds of years after the Flood Abraham was called, and to him was given the promise that his descendants should exalt God’s law. In course of time the Israelites went into Egypt, where for many years they suffered grievous oppression at the hands of the Egyptians. After they had been in slavery for nearly four hundred years, God delivered them by a wonderful manifestation of His power. He revealed Himself to the Egyptians as the Ruler of the universe, One greater than all heathen deities.

We are called to represent to the world the character of God as it was revealed to Moses. In answer to the prayer of Moses, “Show me Thy glory,” the Lord promised, “I will make all My goodness pass before thee.” “And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” Exodus 33:18, 19; 34:6, 7. This is the fruit that God desires from His people. In the purity of their characters, in the holiness of their lives, in their mercy and loving-kindness and compassion, they are to demonstrate that the “law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7.

Sabbath Meetings

6T 365.1

While we are exhorted not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together, these assemblies are not to be merely for our own refreshing. We are to be inspired with greater zeal to impart the consolation we have received. It is our duty to be very jealous for the glory of God and to bring no evil report, even by the sadness of the countenance or by ill-advised words, as if the requirements of God were a restriction upon our liberty. Even in this world of sorrow, disappointment, and sin the Lord desires us to be cheerful, and strong in His strength. The whole person is privileged to bear a decided testimony in every line. In features, in temper, in words, in character, we are to witness that the service of God is good. Thus we proclaim that “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7.

The Desire of Ages

Chapter 31—The Sermon on the Mount

DA 308.2

When the law was proclaimed from Sinai, God made known to men the holiness of His character, that by contrast they might see the sinfulness of their own. The law was given to convict them of sin, and reveal their need of a Saviour. It would do this as its principles were applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit. This work it is still to do. In the life of Christ the principles of the law are made plain; and as the Holy Spirit of God touches the heart, as the light of Christ reveals to men their need of His cleansing blood and His justifying righteousness, the law is still an agent in bringing us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7.

The Desire of Ages

Chapter 54—The Good Samaritan

DA 505.1

All this is but a fulfillment of the principle of the law,—the principle that is illustrated in the story of the good Samaritan, and made manifest in the life of Jesus. His character reveals the true significance of the law, and shows what is meant by loving our neighbor as ourselves. And when the children of God manifest mercy, kindness, and love toward all men, they also are witnessing to the character of the statutes of heaven. They are bearing testimony to the fact that “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7. And whoever fails to manifest this love is breaking the law which he professes to revere. For the spirit we manifest toward our brethren declares what is our spirit toward God. The love of God in the heart is the only spring of love toward our neighbor. “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?” Beloved, “if we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and His love is perfected in us.” 1 John 4:20, 12.

Chapter 27—Modern Revivals

GC 468.2

“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7. Thus superficial conversions abound, and multitudes are joined to the church who have never been united to Christ.

There is a right side—the side of Him who declared, “I have kept my Father’s commandments” (John 15:10). “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul” (Psalm 19:7). There is a wrong side—the side of the one who in heaven rebelled against God. With his sympathizers he was expelled from the heavenly courts, and from his action we may understand that no matter how high a position a man may occupy in the church or in the world, if he is disloyal to God, if he accepts human laws instead of the laws of Jehovah, he can never enter heaven, for he is living in direct opposition to God. He will receive punishment in accordance with the power of influence which instead of being placed on the side of God was placed on the side of Satan. The greater the talents and influence given him, the greater will be his punishment. God will require at his hands the souls he has turned aside from truth to falsehood. Instead of leading them to God, he led them away from God, and their blood will be charged to him....

MB 77.5

Jesus said, Be perfect as your Father is perfect. If you are the children of God you are partakers of His nature, and you cannot but be like Him. Every child lives by the life of his father. If you are God’s children, begotten by His Spirit, you live by the life of God. In Christ dwells “all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9); and the life of Jesus is made manifest “in our mortal flesh” (2 Corinthians 4:11). That life in you will produce the same character and manifest the same works as it did in Him. Thus you will be in harmony with every precept of His law; for “the law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul.” Psalm 19:7 , margin. Through love “the righteousness of the law” will be “fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:4.

The law of God is the great standard of righteousness. This the apostle declares is holy, just, and good. David says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul” (Psalm 19:7). Christ says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” ... “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him” (John 14:15, 21). This is most assuredly the witness of the Spirit.... “If ye keep my commandments”—from the heart—“ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love” (John 15:10).

The sincere believer diffuses vital energy which is penetrating, and imparts new moral power to the souls with which [he] labors. It is not the power of the man himself, but the power of the Holy Spirit that does the transforming work. “The law of the Lord is perfect converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] The salt has retained its savor, and it has an influence that is unperceived and unestimated upon the characters of those who possess it. The Lord says, “I will make a man more precious than fine gold, even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.” [Isaiah 13:12.]

What are we to do? Study the Scriptures. Search the Scriptures. See whether you are obeying the law of God and the standard of His righteousness. Tell your children that you have disregarded the law of God. Tell them you feel as Ezra did. Here was Josiah so sorry to think that the law had been lost and that they had been careless and heedless of it. They bring it before him. There stands up one that reads it, and the people weep and mourn because they have not kept the law. But rejoice that you have the law now. We will keep it. Bring your offerings and gifts and offer praise to God with your tears and mourning. That is just what we want to do. If the light of the law of God comes to us and we see intelligently that we have been transgressing it, we can say, “Now I understand how it is that we have been in darkness and uncertainty. Now we will lay right hold of the commandments of God and we will keep them and live, ‘for the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.’” [Psalm 19:7.] Why should God abolish a perfect thing? We want to use our intelligence to a purpose, and send back joy and rejoicing that you have found out that you were not loyal servants of the Lord of Heaven, but that you would be. You would not have it go up to the judgment that you were transgressing the law of God and putting Christ to an open shame before the world. Thinking good but not practicing will not answer.

They are the ten holy precepts, the royal law, the holy law of God which is the standard of character which every soul present must meet in the judgment, notwithstanding it may be proclaimed from the pulpits of the day that God has no law. Now who believes it? Every nation has a law; but the God of heaven has given us His law to represent His character, and there it stands. There is not one of the precepts done away. They stand immutable and eternal. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] What do you want to change a perfect thing for? Christ within is the glory of God, the hope big with immortality and eternal life. “That they all may be one, even as we are one; I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; that the world may know,” and now comes the greatest assertion that has ever been made in behalf of His people, “that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as thou hast loved me.” [Verses 22, 23.] Can we take that in? The “God of heaven loves us as He loves His Son.” All the world is in rebellion against God, but those who struggle, who strive, who agonize to enter in at the strait gate, are beloved of God with peculiar tenderness, and they shall find the broad path, for, “thy commandment is exceeding broad.” [Psalm 119:96.] “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.]

In this age of the world, when Satan is seeking, through manifold agencies, to blind the eyes of men and women to the binding claims of the law of God, there is need of men who can cause many to “tremble at the commandment of our God” (Ezra 10:3). There is need of true reformers, who will point transgressors to the great Lawgiver and teach them that “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul” (Psalm 19:7). There is need of men mighty in the Scriptures, men whose every word and act exalts the statutes of Jehovah, men who seek to strengthen faith. If he has succeeded in his purpose of gaining the professed Christian world to his side, and if the world and the church have formed a bond of fellowship to make void the law of God, that does not prove that it has been changed. To admit that God instituted a law so imperfect in character that it needed to be changed, would be to stamp God as changeable and imperfect. But God has spoken on this point; let us heed what he says. “My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that this is gone out of my lips.” [Psalm 89:34.]

Ever bear in mind, in choosing your teachers, to make choice of those who consider that “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] Discipline and order must be maintained.

If we are Christians, we cannot follow the world’s policy. “It is written” must be our constant counsellor. What ungodly men do should not guide us. What men think and say should never lead one soul to swerve from the path of strict rectitude. We are to go to the Fountainhead, and carefully meditate upon the great moral principles contained in the law of Jehovah. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] We are to bring it into all our business transactions. The decisive question is, What has God said? What standard has He set up? This once determined, we should feel bound to follow it.

The law of God is the great moral standard of righteousness. This the apostle declares is holy, just, and good. [Romans 7:12.] David says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] Christ says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” [John 14:15.] “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” [John 15:7.] “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” [John 14:21.] This is most assuredly the witness of the Spirit. “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit, so shall ye be by disciples.” “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments (from the heart), ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” [John 15:8-10.]

“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] Had you not best study what this means? That law aims to convert mind and heart to correct principles of action. It will give reality to your practice and works by making Christ your Redeemer, your stronghold, laying hold of His righteousness because He died to give you all the power and riches of His grace that your practice might show your conversion. Believe in Jesus Christ as your complete Saviour. Change your way to God’s way. Choose a new path, the narrow path of holiness, which, if you follow on to know the Lord, will lead to the broad road of perfect freedom in Christ. You will follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth.

Many and abundant are the promises that God has made to all those who will be obedient to all His commandments. All who have faith in Christ obtain a rich experience in His goodness and love, which is of more value than gold. It is a goodness that has been recognized in times of great necessity. Then let not any of God’s chosen ones suffer their faith to fail, at the time when they should reveal the inward power of the Christian’s hope. It is our duty to be very jealous of the glory of God, and bring no evil report even by the sadness of the countenance, or by the ill-advised words, as though the requirements of God were a restriction upon our liberty. The whole person is privileged to bear a decided testimony in every line—in features, in temper, in words, in character, that the service of the Lord is good. Thus they proclaim: “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.]

God requires obedience of every human being. Our eternal future hangs here. In obedience to the law of God we shall form a beautiful character. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] The children should be taught respect for every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Parents are ever to magnify the precepts of the law of the Lord before their children, by showing obedience to that law, by living themselves under the control of God. If a sense of the sacredness of the law gets hold of the parents it will surely transform the character by converting the soul.

“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] Obedience to this law is required, for it is the transcript of the character of God. Obedience is the proof of love. “If ye love me,” Christ said, “keep my commandments.” [John 14:15.] In order to escape from obedience to the moral law, the teachers of today deceive poor bewildered souls by saying that Christ’s commandments and the precepts of the moral law are not the same thing. But this is not so. “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me, and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. ... If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not, keepeth not my sayings, and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” [Verses 21, 23, 24.] This is the truth in regard to the plan of salvation. No other foundation can be laid than that which is laid.

The sanitarium is to take for its motto, “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] God desires every man to understand his duty and obey the call, working in the way of the Lord, not after his own devising. God always rewards the confidence of His people. The way to the throne of mercy is always open. God sees the wants of His people as clearly in the darkness of midnight which surrounds them as in the splendor of noonday. To look to God for help at all times, this is our safety. When God grants us His protection, and says of us, “Ye are laborers together with me,” <if you keep the way of the Lord you> are safe in the midst of the greatest dangers. When Satan seeks to deceive the child of faith and trust, God lifts up a standard against the enemy in behalf of those who are conscientiously working in harmony with Him. The standard which he uplifts is His law. Those who work righteousness have an ever-present Friend to help them. In every time of need and trouble and perplexity He is near them. When they are tempted He presents Himself as their defense, saying, I will guide thee with Mine eye. I will deliver thee from perplexity, and be a covert for thee against the strife of tongues.

I know that you will have trials. The very condition of things which your own course of action created in the office, through your failure to learn in the school of Christ, through your lack of experience in divine things, will react upon yourself. Had you been filled with tender regard for every soul who needed your help, had you put forth painstaking effort to inspire the erring with hope and faith, had you practiced self-denial and manifested the love of Jesus which is positively necessary for all in positions of trust to manifest, your experience would have been of a different character. The Lord has no pleasure in the work of those who do not represent Christ, and after opening before them their defects of character, after bearing long with their mistakes, He will remove them from the work and test and try others. For even in this life, Christ is judge of all the earth and measures characters by the divine standard. Those who delight in the law of God are not under the law; for the law of God is an instrument of strength to them, a wall of protection, a refuge for guardianship, and does not bring condemnation; for to those who are in harmony with it, it is holy, just, and good. They can declare that “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.]

They sought above all things to know the will of God. Do these words represent the church in its present condition? Many who now think they are in the truth are far from practicing the principles of truth. The reason of the weakness and inefficiency of the church is that many of its members do not do the will of God, but follow their own impulses. They are not led by the Spirit of God, but by another spirit. They know not the meaning of the written Word. Like Paul, they are alive without the law. I am bidden by the Lord to charge every soul, with open Bible, to seek for divine wisdom, that he may learn “what is truth,” and accept truth as his standard. My brother, be of good courage in the Lord. We see so much need of the grace of Christ, and of that faith which works by love and purifies the soul. We need to learn our lessons of Jesus Christ, and to labor both for the health of the body and the saving of the soul. Our mission is the same as that of our Master, of whom it is written, “He went about doing good and healing all that were sick.” [See Acts 10:38.] In every place we are to bear a decided testimony for the truth for this time, representing to the world the character of God as it was revealed to Moses. In the prayer of Moses, “Show me Thy glory,” the Lord answered, “I will make all My goodness pass before thee.” “And the Lord passed before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” [Exodus 33:18, 19; 34:6, 7.] This is the fruit that God desires of His people. In the purity of their characters, in the holiness of their lives, in their mercy and loving-kindness and compassion, they are to demonstrate that “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.]

In this representation the Lord desired to teach the lesson that He requires in His people—purity of character, holiness of life. He desires to see revealed in them toward each other the attributes of mercy and loving kindness and longsuffering, that His people may demonstrate that “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] The Lord is ready to manifest Himself to us if our hearts are seeking and serving Him. It is ever His desire to impart the richest blessings to those who serve Him with a pure heart. Christ will be our teacher if we will open our hearts to His instruction and obey His voice.

By His life and death Christ taught that only in obedience to all of God’s commandments can man find safety and obtain an healthy experience, for “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] God’s law is the transcript of His character. I might dwell upon this subject, but I cannot present all I would gladly present. At Sinai the law was given a second time in awful grandeur. The Lord spoke His precepts. And let all ever bear in mind that God not only spake the law, but engraved the law with His own finger upon tables of stone. Exodus 20th chapter, verses 1-20.

“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] We are not to give way to despair if the Holy Spirit points out to us our transgressions and our imperfections of character. God is powerful to save every repentant soul. The words of inspiration are given for our comfort. Even the patriarchs and apostles were subject to reproof because of their weaknesses, yet they took heed to the messages that came to them and through faith obtained a good report. They received the correction of the Lord, and He fought their battles for them. In His strength they conquered gloriously.

In this work of restoration much painstaking effort will be required. No startling communications of strange doctrines should be made to these souls; but as they are helped physically, the truth for this time should be presented. Men and women and youth need to see the law of God with its far-reaching requirements. It is not hardship, toil, or poverty that degrades humanity; it is sin, the transgression of God’s law. The efforts put forth to rescue the outcast and degraded will be of no avail unless the claims of the law of God and the need of loyalty to Him are impressed on mind and heart. God has enjoined nothing that is not necessary to bind up humanity with Him. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.... The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” “By the word of Thy lips,” says the psalmist, I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.” Psalm 19:7, 8; 17:4.

The time has come for us to have a decided understanding of what shall be comprehended in medical missionary work—what shall go forth by pen or voice to be discredited, and what to be exalted. As the train of human reasoning is heard, it will be made apparent that the character must be determined by the inward work of grace upon the heart. If the law of God is written in the heart, men will prove the excellence of their resolutions. Their conduct will be after the divine similitude. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. Chapter 26—The Perfect Law

1SM 212.1

When the Spirit of God reveals to man the full meaning of the law, a change takes place in his heart. The faithful portrayal of his true state by the prophet Nathan made David acquainted with his own sins, and aided him in putting them away. He accepted the counsel meekly, and humbled himself before God. “The law of the Lord,” he said, “is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. Again the apostle says, “If there be any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, fulfill ye my joy that ye be like-minded, having the same joy, being of one accord, of one mind.” How much does this appeal impress the mind and affect the actions? “Let nothing be done through strife and vain glory: but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” [Philippians 2:1-3.] This is the remedy for all dissension. The best missionary work we can do is to follow the instruction here given. By so doing we shall testify to the fact that “the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. “Labor not for the meat which perisheth,” Christ admonished, “but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for Him hath God the Father sealed.” John 6:27. When we obey these words, we shall rightly understand the teachings of the Scriptures, and esteem the truth as the most valuable treasure with which to store the mind. We shall have within us a wellspring of the water of life. We shall pray, as did the psalmist, “Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law;” and we shall find, as he did, that “the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is Thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.” Psalm 119:18; 19:9-11.

The psalmist prayed, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” The Lord heard him, for how full of assurance are the words, “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” “More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” (Psalm 119:18, 103; 19:10.). And as the Lord heard and answered David, so He will hear and answer us, making our hearts full of gladness and rejoicing.13Letter 25, 1903.

The Psalmist prayed, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law,” and the Lord regarded his sincere prayer, for the sacred record records his satisfaction in the truth revealed to him. He says, “How sweet are thy words unto my taste, Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth. More than to be desired than gold, yea, than much fine gold. Sweeter also than honey, than the honey comb.” [Psalm 119:18, 103; 19:10.] How rare is this experience.

In this life who can boast, for who can understand the magnitude of his errors? Every man is responsible to God for the consecration of every talent to the service of Christ during his whole lifetime. He is accountable for his influence, for all that he might have been had he advance in knowledge and spirituality according to this opportunity. He is accountable for the souls that might have been saved had he labored as they that must give an account. How solemn is the day of our probation. From every one of us let this prayer go up to God, “Cleanse thou me from secret faults.” [Psalm 19:12.]

With you there is much at stake. You are motherless. The one who loved and feared God is resting in her death-slumber in the grave. You have motherless brothers and sisters, and if you pursue a course that is after the order Christ would have you, you will be a great blessing to others. It is necessary that you cherish moral independence, that you feel that your only safety is having your life hid with Christ in God. Lay solid timbers into your character-building, and do not cling to sin in any form. Secret sins will strive for the mastery. The Psalmist says, “Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults.” [Psalm 19:12.]

Those who consider themselves capable and efficient know little of their own poor selves. The explanation has been given me why there is so little safety for men placed in responsible positions. They want to do some great thing in proportion with their supposed great position. In the place of considering themselves as less than nothing unless worked by the Holy Spirit, they themselves want to work the Holy Spirit. The prayer of each should be: “Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.” [Psalm 19:12-14.]

Chapter 37—The Smitten Rock

PP 413.1

The same beautiful and expressive figures are carried throughout the Bible. Centuries before the advent of Christ, Moses pointed to Him as the rock of Israel’s salvation (Deuteronomy 32:15); the psalmist sang of Him as “my Redeemer,” “the rock of my strength,” “the rock that is higher than I,” “a rock of habitation,” “rock of my heart,” “rock of my refuge.” In David’s song His grace is pictured also as the cool, “still waters,” amid green pastures, beside which the heavenly Shepherd leads His flock. Again, “Thou shalt make them,” he says, “drink of the river of Thy pleasures. For with Thee is the fountain of life.” Psalm 19:14; 62:7; 61:2; 71:3 (margin); 73:26 (margin); 94:22; 23:2; 36:8, 9. And the wise man declares, “The wellspring of wisdom [is] as a flowing brook.” Proverbs 18:4. To Jeremiah, Christ is “the fountain of living waters;” to Zechariah, “a fountain opened ... for sin and for uncleanness.” Jeremiah 2:13; Zechariah 13:1.

We have each of us an individual work to do, to gird up the loins of our minds, to be sober, to watch unto prayer. We should discipline the mind to think in a healthful channel, and not permit it to dwell upon things that are evil. The Lord has rich blessings for all who serve Him in righteousness and truth. Great thoughts, noble aspirations, clear perceptions of truth, unselfish purposes, yearnings for purity and holiness, will bear fruit in words that reveal the character of the heart-treasure. This is religion. The Lord will reveal Himself to all who thus serve Him, and will give them knowledge, that they may be fruitful in good words and good deeds. Let us pray as did David, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer.” [Psalm 19:14.]
