Context of Luke 4:41
39And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and served them. 40Now while the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He was laying His hands on each one of them and healing them. Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” And yet He was rebuking them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ. 42Now when day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and they came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving them. 43But He said to them, “I must also preach the kingdom of God to the other cities, because I was sent for this purpose.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-44Verses 31-44 Christ's preaching much affected the people; and a working power went with it to the consciences of men. These miracles showed Christ to be a controller and conqueror of Satan, a healer of diseases. Where Christ gives a new life, in recovery from sickness, it should be a new life, spent more than ever in his service, to his glory. Our business should be to spread abroad Christ's fame in every place, to beseech him in behalf of those diseased…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 41You are the Son of God!: This was a title used for the Christ (God’s chosen king and deliverer, the Messiah; see 2 Samuel 7:14; Psalms 2:7; 89:26–27). Luke often connects the titles Christ and the Son of God (Luke 9:35; 22:66–71; Acts 9:20, 22). would not allow them to speak: Jesus often showed his authority over demons by making them silent. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4141. suffered them not to speak--The marginal reading ("to say that they knew him to be Christ") here is wrong. Our Lord ever refused testimony from devils, for the very reason why they were eager to give it, because He and they would thus seem to be one interest, as His enemies actually alleged. (See on Mt 12:24, &c.; see also Ac 16:16-18.) See on Mr 1:35-39, where we learn how early He retired, and how He was engaged in solitude when they came seeking…Read the comment
