Psalms 78:9-67
9The sons of Ephraim 1were 2archers equipped with bows, Yet 3they turned back on the day of battle.10They 4did not keep the covenant of God And refused to 5walk in His Law;11They 6forgot His deeds And His 7miracles that He had shown them.128He performed wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the 9field of Zoan.13He 10divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand 11up like a heap.14Then He led them with the cloud by 12day And all the night with a 13light of fire.15He 14split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them plenty to drink like the ocean depths.16He 15brought forth streams from the rock And made waters run down like rivers.
17Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To 16rebel against the Most High in the desert.18And in their heart they 17put God to the test By asking for 18food 19that suited their taste.19Then they spoke against God; They said, “20Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?20Behold, He 21struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He also provide bread? Will He prepare 22meat for His people?”
21Therefore the Lord heard and 23was 24full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also mounted against Israel,22Because they 25did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.23Yet He commanded the clouds above And 26opened the doors of heaven;24He 27rained down manna upon them to eat, And gave them 2829food from heaven.25Man ate the bread of 30angels; He sent them 31food 3233in abundance.26He 34made the east wind blow in the sky And by His 35power He directed the south wind.27When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even 36winged fowl like the sand of the seas,28He let them fall in the midst of 37their camp, All around their dwellings.29So they 38ate and were well filled, And He 39satisfied their longing.3040Yet before they had abandoned their longing, 41While their food was in their mouths,31The 42anger of God rose against them And killed 43some of their 44strongest ones, And 45subdued the choice men of Israel.32In spite of all this they 46still sinned And 47did not believe in His wonderful works.33So He brought 48their days to an end in futility, And their years to an end in sudden terror.
34When He killed them, then they 49sought Him, And they returned and searched 50diligently for God;35And they remembered that God was their 51rock, And the Most High God their 52Redeemer.36But they 53flattered Him with their mouth And 54lied to Him with their tongue.37For their heart was not 55steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful with His covenant.38But He, being 56compassionate, 5758forgave their wrongdoing and did not destroy them; And often He 5960restrained His anger And did not stir up all His wrath.39So 61He remembered that they were only 62flesh, A 6364wind that passes and does not return.
40How often they 65rebelled against Him in the wilderness And 66grieved Him in the 67desert!41Again and again they 6869tempted God, And pained the 70Holy One of Israel.42They 71did not remember 72His 73power, The day when He 74redeemed them from the enemy,43When He performed His 75signs in Egypt And His 76marvels in the field of Zoan,44And 77turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, so that they could not drink.45He sent swarms of 78flies among them that devoured them, And 79frogs that destroyed them.46He also gave their crops to the 80grasshopper And the product of their labor to the 81locust.47He 82destroyed their vines with 83hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost.48He also turned their 84cattle over to the hailstones, And their herds to bolts of lightning.49He 85sent His burning anger upon them, Fury and indignation and trouble, A band of 86destroying angels.50He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their souls from death, But 87turned their lives over to the plague,51And 88struck all the firstborn in Egypt, The 89first and best of their vigor in the tents of 90Ham.52But He 91led His own people out like sheep, And guided them in the wilderness 92like a flock;53He led them 93safely, so that they did not fear; But 94the sea engulfed their enemies.
54So 95He brought them to His holy 96land, To this 9798hill country 99which His right hand had gained.55He also 100drove out the nations from them And 101apportioned them as an inheritance by measurement, And had the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.56Yet they 102103tempted and 104rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,57But turned back and 105acted treacherously like their fathers; They 106turned aside like a treacherous bow.58For they 107provoked Him with their 108high places And 109moved Him to jealousy with their 110carved images.59When God heard them, He 111was filled with 112wrath And He utterly 113rejected Israel;60So that He 114abandoned the 115dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent 116which He had pitched among people,61And He gave up His 117strength to captivity And His glory 118into the hand of the enemy.62He also 119turned His people over to the sword, And 120was filled with wrath at His inheritance.63121Fire devoured 122His young men, And 123His 124virgins had no wedding songs.64125His 126priests fell by the sword, And 127His 128widows could not weep.
65Then the Lord 129awoke as if from sleep, Like a 130warrior 131overcome by wine.66He 132133drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting disgrace.67He also 134rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
