Context of Psalms 44:21
19Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals And covered us with deep darkness. 20If we had forgotten the name of our God Or extended our hands to a strange god, Would God not find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. 22But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. 23Wake Yourself up, why do You sleep, Lord? Awake, do not reject us forever.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21Shall not God search this out? - That is, If this had been the case, it would be known to God. If, as a nation, we had been given to idolatry, or if our hearts had been secretly alienated from the true God, though there had been no open manifestation of apostasy, yet that could not have been concealed from him.
