Context of Psalms 44:21
19But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness. 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart? 22Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. 23Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21Shall not God search this out? - That is, If this had been the case, it would be known to God. If, as a nation, we had been given to idolatry, or if our hearts had been secretly alienated from the true God, though there had been no open manifestation of apostasy, yet that could not have been concealed from him.
