Context of Psalms 116:14
12What shall I repay to the Lord For all His benefits to me? 13I will lift up the cup of salvation, And call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord; May it be in the presence of all His people! 15Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His godly ones. 16O Lord, I surely am Your slave, I am Your slave, the son of Your female slave, You have unfastened my restraints.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people - He was probably now bringing his offering to the temple. These words are repeated, Psalm 116:18.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14I will pay my vows - I will perform or execute. The word vows here refers probably to the solemn promise which he had made in his sickness - the promise to devote himself to God, should he be restored to health. Compare the notes at Isaiah 38:15, notes at Isaiah 38:20. Such promises are commonly made in sickness, and, alas! almost as commonly disregarded and forgotten on a restoration to health. Yet such vows should be sacredly observed, for (a) They…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-19Verses 10-19 When troubled, we do best to hold our peace, for we are apt to speak unadvisedly. Yet there may be true faith where there are workings of unbelief; but then faith will prevail; and being humbled for our distrust of God's word, we shall experience his faithfulness to it. What can the pardoned sinner, or what can those who have been delivered from trouble or distress, render to the Lord for his benefits? We cannot in any way profit him. Our…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-14The Lord’s gracious gifts are so great that the psalmist can do nothing to repay his debt. Keeping his promises publicly demonstrates his gratitude. All he has done for the psalmist includes answers to prayer, rescue, and life. The cup of salvation overflows with God’s blessings (Psalm 23:5), unlike the cup of judgment (75:8). The psalmist makes vows (Psalm 116:18) to praise the Lord publicly (116:17–18).Read the comment
