Job’s Character and Wealth
(James 5:7–12)
1There wasH1961 a manH376 in the landH776 of UzH5780 whose nameH8034 was JobH347. And this manH376 wasH1961 blamelessH8535 and uprightH3477, fearingH3373 GodH430 and shunningH5493 evilH7451. 2He had sevenH7651 sonsH1121 and threeH7969 daughtersH1323, 3and he ownedH1961H4735 7,000H7651H505 sheepH6629, 3,000H7969H505 camelsH1581, 500H2568H3967 yokeH6776 of oxenH1241, 500H2568H3967 female donkeysH860, and a veryH3966H1961 large number ofH7227 servantsH5657. Job was theH1931 greatestH1419 manH376 of allH3605 the peopleH1121 of the EastH6924.
4Job’s sonsH1121 would take turnsH1980 holdingH6213 feastsH4960 in their homesH1004H376H3117, and they would inviteH7971H7121 their threeH7969 sistersH269 to eatH398 and drinkH8354 with themH5973.
5AndH1961 whenH3588 the daysH3117 of feastingH4960 were overH5362, JobH347 would sendH7971 for his children to purify themH6942, rising earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 to offerH5927 burnt offeringsH5930H4557 for all of themH3605. ForH3588 JobH347 thoughtH559, “PerhapsH194 my childrenH1121 have sinnedH2398 and cursedH1288 GodH430 in their heartsH3824.” ThisH3602 was Job’sH347 regularH3605H3117 practiceH6213.
Satan’s First Attack
One dayH3117 the sonsH1121 of GodH430 cameH935 to present themselvesH3320 beforeH5921 the LORDH3068, and SatanH78541 alsoH1571 cameH935 with themH8432.
7“WhereH370 have you come fromH935?” saidH559 the LORDH3068 toH413 SatanH7854.
“From roamingH7751 through the earthH776,” heH7854 repliedH6030, “and walking back and forthH1980 in it.”
8Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 SatanH7854, “Have you consideredH7760H3820H5921 My servantH5650 JobH347? ForH3588 there is no oneH369 on earthH776 like himH3644, a manH376 who is blamelessH8535 and uprightH3477, who fearsH3373 GodH430 and shunsH5493 evilH7451.”
9SatanH7854 answeredH6030 the LORDH3068H559, “Does JobH347 fearH3372 GodH430 for nothingH2600? 10Have You notH3808H859 placed a hedgeH7753 on every sideH5439 around himH1157 and his householdH1004 andH1157 allH3605 thatH834 he owns? You have blessedH1288 the workH4639 of his handsH3027, and his possessionsH4735 have increasedH6555 in the landH776. 11ButH199 stretch outH7971H4994 Your handH3027 and strikeH5060 allH3605 thatH834 he has, and he will surelyH518H3808 curse YouH1288 toH5921 Your faceH6440.”
12“Very wellH2009,” saidH559 the LORDH3068 toH413 SatanH7854. “EverythingH3605 he has is in your handsH3027, butH7535 you must notH408 layH7971 a handH3027 on the man himselfH413.”
Then SatanH7854H5973 went outH3318 from the presenceH6440 of the LORDH3068.
Job Loses His Children and Possessions
One dayH3117, while Job’s sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323 were eatingH398 and drinkingH8354 wineH3196 in their oldestH1060 brother’sH251 houseH1004, 14a messengerH4397 cameH935 and reportedH559 toH413 JobH347: “While the oxenH1241 wereH1961 plowingH2790 and the donkeysH860 were grazingH7462 nearbyH5921H3027, 15the SabeansH7614 swooped downH5307 and took them awayH3947. They putH5221 the servantsH5288 to the swordH6310H2719, and IH589 aloneH905 have escapedH4422H7535 to tellH5046 you!”
16While heH2088 was stillH5750 speakingH1696, anotherH2088 messenger cameH935 and reportedH559: “The fireH784 of GodH430 fellH5307 fromH4480 heavenH8064. It burnedH1197 and consumedH398 the sheepH6629 and the servantsH5288, and IH589 aloneH905 have escapedH4422H7535 to tellH5046 you!”
17While heH5750 was stillH2088 speakingH1696, anotherH2088 messenger cameH935 and reportedH559: “The ChaldeansH3778 formedH7760 threeH7969 bandsH7218, raidedH6584 the camelsH1581, and took them awayH3947. They putH5221 the servantsH5288 to the swordH6310H2719, and IH589 aloneH905 have escapedH4422H7535 to tellH5046 you!”
18WhileH5704 heH2088 was still speakingH1696, another messengerH2088 cameH935 and reportedH559: “Your sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323 were eatingH398 and drinkingH8354 wineH3196 in their oldestH1060 brother’sH251 houseH1004, 19when suddenlyH2009 a mightyH1419 windH7307 swept inH935 fromH5676 the desertH4057 and struckH5060 the fourH702 cornersH6438 of the houseH1004. It collapsedH5307 onH5921 the young peopleH5288 and they are deadH4191, and IH589 aloneH905 have escapedH4422H7535 to tellH5046 you!”
20Then JobH347 stood upH6965, toreH7167 his robeH4598, and shavedH1494 his headH7218. He fellH5307 to the groundH776 and worshipedH7812, 21sayingH559:
22In allH3605 thisH2063, JobH347 did notH3808 sinH2398 orH3808 chargeH5414 GodH430 with wrongdoingH8604.
