The Parable of the Workers

1“ForG1063 theG3588 kingdomG932 ofG3588 heavenG3772 isG1510 likeG3664 a landownerG444G3617 whoG3748 went outG1831 early inG260 the morningG4404 to hireG3409 workersG2040 forG1519 hisG846 vineyardG290. 2He agreedG4856 to pay them a denariusG12201 forG1537 theG3588 dayG2250 and sentG649 themG846 intoG1519 hisG846 vineyardG290.

3

AboutG4012 the thirdG5154 hourG56102 he went outG1831 and sawG3708 othersG243 standingG2476 inG1722 theG3588 marketplaceG58 doing nothingG692. 4‘YouG4771 alsoG2532 goG5217 intoG1519 my vineyardG290,’ he saidG2036, ‘andG2532 I will payG1325 youG4771 whateverG3739G1437 isG1510 rightG1342.’ 5SoG1161 they wentG565.

He went outG1831 againG3825 aboutG4012 the sixthG1623 hour andG2532 the ninthG1766 hourG56103 and didG4160 the same thingG5615.

6

AboutG4012 theG3588 eleventhG1734 hour4 he went outG1831 and foundG2147 still othersG243 standingG2476 around. ‘WhyG5101 have you been standingG2476 hereG5602 allG3650 dayG2250 long doing nothingG692?’ he askedG3004G846.

7‘BecauseG3754 no oneG3762 has hiredG3409 usG1473,’ they answeredG3004G846.

So he toldG3004 themG846, ‘YouG4771 alsoG2532 goG5217 intoG1519 my vineyardG290.’5

8WhenG1161 eveningG3798 cameG1096, theG3588 ownerG2962 of theG3588 vineyardG290 saidG3004 toG3588 hisG846 foremanG2012, ‘CallG2564 theG3588 workersG2040 andG2532 payG591 themG846 their wagesG3408, startingG756 withG575 theG3588 lastG2078 ones hired and moving onG2193 to theG3588 firstG4413.’

9

The workers who were hired aboutG4012 theG3588 eleventhG1734 hourG5610 cameG2064 and eachG303 receivedG2983 a denariusG1220. 10So whenG2532 theG3588 originalG4413 workers cameG2064, they assumedG3543 they would receiveG2983 moreG4119. ButG2532 eachG303 of themG846 alsoG2532 receivedG2983 a denariusG1220.

11

On receivingG2983 their pay, they began to grumbleG1111 againstG2596 theG3588 landownerG3617. 12‘TheseG3778 men who were hired lastG2078 workedG4160 only oneG1520 hourG5610,’ they saidG3004, ‘andG2532 you have madeG4160 themG846 equalG2470 to usG1473 whoG3588 have borneG941 theG3588 burdenG922 andG2532 theG3588 scorching heatG2742 of theG3588 dayG2250.’

13ButG1161 he answeredG611 oneG1520 of themG846, ‘FriendG2083, I am not being unfairG3756G91 to youG4771. Did you not agreeG3780G4856 with meG1473 on one denariusG1220? 14TakeG142 yourG4674 pay andG2532 goG5217. I wantG2309 to giveG1325 thisG3778 lastG2078 man the same asG5613 I gave youG4771. 15Do I not have the rightG2228G3756G1832G1473 to doG4160 asG3739 I pleaseG2309 withG1722 whatG3588 is mineG1699? OrG2228 are youG1510G4771G3588G3788 enviousG4190 becauseG3754 IG1473 amG1510 generousG18?’

16SoG3779 theG3588 lastG2078 will beG1510 firstG4413, andG2532 theG3588 firstG4413 will be lastG2078.”6

The Third Prediction of the Passion

(Mark 10:32–34; Luke 18:31–34)

17AsG2532 JesusG2424 was going upG305 toG1519 JerusalemG2414, He tookG3880 theG3588 twelveG1427 disciplesG3101 asideG2596 andG2532 saidG2036, 18“LookG2400, we are going upG305 toG1519 JerusalemG2414, andG2532 theG3588 SonG5207 of ManG444 will be delivered overG3860 to theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG2532 scribesG1122. They will condemnG2632 HimG846 toG1519 deathG2288 19andG2532 will deliverG3860 Him overG846 toG1519 theG3588 GentilesG1484 to be mockedG1702 andG2532 floggedG3146 andG2532 crucifiedG4717. AndG2532 on theG3588 thirdG5154 dayG2250 He will be raisedG1453 to life.”

A Mother’s Request

(Mark 10:35–45)

20ThenG5119 theG3588 motherG3384 of Zebedee’sG2199 sonsG5207 cameG4334 toG846 Jesus withG3326 herG846 sonsG5207 and knelt downG4352 to make a requestG154G5100 ofG575 HimG846.

21“WhatG5101 do you wantG2309?” He inquiredG2036.

She answeredG3004G846, “DeclareG2036 thatG2443 inG1722 YourG4771 kingdomG932 oneG1520 of theseG3778 twoG1417 sonsG5207 of mineG1473 may sitG2523 atG1537 YourG4771 right handG1188, andG2532 the other atG1537 YourG4771 leftG2176.”

22“You do not knowG3756G1492 whatG5101 you are askingG154,” JesusG2424 repliedG611. “Can youG1410 drinkG4095 theG3588 cupG4221 IG1473 am goingG3195 to drinkG4095?”7

“We canG1410,” the brothers answeredG3004G846.

23“You will indeed drinkG3303G4095 MyG1473 cupG4221,”8 Jesus saidG3004. “ButG1161 to sitG2523 atG1537 MyG1473 rightG1188 or leftG2176 isG1510 notG3756 MineG1699 to grantG1325. These seats belong to those for whomG3739 MyG1473 FatherG3962 has prepared themG2090.”

24WhenG2532 theG3588 tenG1176 heard aboutG191 this, they were indignantG23 withG4012 theG3588 twoG1417 brothersG80. 25ButG1161 JesusG2424 called them asideG4341G846 and saidG2036, “You knowG1492 thatG3754 theG3588 rulersG758 of theG3588 GentilesG1484 lord it overG2634 themG846, andG2532 their superiorsG3173 exercise authority overG2715 themG846. 26It shall not beG3756G1510 this wayG3779 amongG1722 youG4771. InsteadG235, whoeverG3739G1437 wantsG2309 to becomeG1096 greatG3173 amongG1722 youG4771 must beG1510 yourG4771 servantG1249, 27andG2532 whoeverG3739G302 wantsG2309 to beG1510 firstG4413 amongG1722 youG4771 must beG1510 yourG4771 slaveG1401— 28just asG5618 theG3588 SonG5207 of ManG444 did not comeG3756G2064 to be servedG1247, butG235 to serveG1247, andG2532 to giveG1325 HisG846 lifeG5590 as a ransomG3083 forG473 manyG4183.”

The Blind Men by the Road

(Mark 10:46–52; Luke 18:35–43)

As theyG846 were leavingG1607G575 JerichoG2410, a largeG4183 crowdG3793 followedG190 HimG846. 30AndG2532 there wereG2400 twoG1417 blindG5185 men sittingG2521 besideG3844 theG3588 roadG3598. When they heardG191 thatG3754 JesusG2424 was passing byG3855, they cried outG2896G3004, “LordG2962, SonG5207 of DavidG1138, have mercy onG1653 usG1473!”

31

TheG3588 crowdG3793 admonishedG2008 themG846 to be silentG4623, butG1161 they cried outG2896 all the louderG3173, “LordG2962, SonG5207 of DavidG1138, have mercy onG1653 usG1473!”

32

JesusG2424 stoppedG2476 and calledG5455 themG846. “WhatG5101 do you wantG2309 Me to doG4160 for youG4771?” He askedG2036.

33“LordG2962,” they answeredG3004G846, “letG2443 ourG1473 eyesG3788 be openedG455.”

34

Moved with compassionG4697, JesusG2424 touchedG680 theirG846 eyesG3659, andG2532 at onceG2112 they received their sightG308 andG2532 followedG190 HimG846.
