Jonah Flees from the LORD
(Nahum 1:1–15)
1Now the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 toH413 JonahH3124 sonH1121 of AmittaiH573, sayingH559, 2“Get upH6965! GoH1980 toH413 the greatH1419 cityH5892 of NinevehH5210 and preachH7121 against itH5921, becauseH3588 its wickednessH7451 has come upH5927 before MeH6440.”
3Jonah, howeverH3124, got upH6965 to fleeH1272 to TarshishH8659, away from the presenceH6440 of the LORDH3068. He went downH3381 to JoppaH3305 and foundH4672 a shipH591 boundH935 for TarshishH8659. So he paidH5414 the fareH7939 and went aboardH3381 to sailH935H5973 for TarshishH8659, away from the presenceH6440 of the LORDH3068.
The Great Storm
(Acts 27:13–26)
4Then the LORDH3068 hurledH2904 a greatH1419 windH7307 uponH413 the seaH3220, and such a violentH1419 stormH5591 aroseH1961 that the shipH591 was in dangerH2803 of breaking apartH7665. 5The sailorsH4419 were afraidH3372, and eachH376 cried outH2199 toH413 his own godH430. And they threwH2904 the ship’sH591 cargoH3627 intoH413 the seaH3220 to lightenH7043 the loadH5921. But JonahH3124 had gone downH3381 toH413 the lowest partH3411 of the vesselH5600, where he lay downH7901 and fell into a deep sleepH7290.
6The captainH7227H2259 approachedH7126 himH413 and saidH559, “HowH4100 can you sleepH7290? Get upH6965 and callH7121 uponH413 your GodH430. PerhapsH194 this GodH430 will considerH6245 us, so thatH3808 we may not perishH6.”
7“ComeH1980!” said the sailorsH559 toH413 one anotherH7453. “Let us castH5307 lotsH1486 to find outH3045 who is responsibleH4310 for thisH2063 calamityH7451 that is upon us.”
So they castH5307 lotsH1486, and the lotH1486 fellH5307 onH5921 JonahH3124.
8“TellH5046 us nowH4994,” they demandedH559, “whoH4310 is to blameH834 for thisH2063 calamityH7451 that is upon us? WhatH4100 is your occupationH4399, and whereH370 have you come fromH935? WhatH4100 is your countryH776, and whoH335H2088 are yourH859 peopleH5971?”
9“I amH595 a HebrewH5680,” replied JonahH559H413. “IH589 worshipH3373 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of the heavensH8064, whoH834 madeH6213 the seaH3220 and the dry landH3004.”
10Then the menH582 were even moreH1419 afraidH3372H3374 and saidH559 to himH413, “WhatH4100 have you doneH6213?” The menH582 knewH3045 thatH3588 heH1931 was fleeingH1272 from the presenceH6440 of the LORDH3068, becauseH3588 he had toldH5046 them.
Jonah Cast into the Sea
11NowH3588 the seaH3220 was growing worseH1980 and worseH5590, so they saidH559 toH413 Jonah, “WhatH4100 must we doH6213 to you to calmH8367 this seaH3220 for usH5921?”
12“Pick me upH5375,” he answeredH559, “and cast meH2904 intoH413 the seaH3220, so itH3220 may quiet downH8367 for youH5921. ForH3588 IH589 knowH3045 thatH3588 I am to blame for thisH2088 violentH1419 stormH5591 that has come upon youH5921.”
13Nevertheless, the menH582 rowed hardH28641 to get backH7725 toH413 dry landH3004, but theyH3808 could notH3201, forH3588 the seaH3220 was ragingH5590 against themH5921 more and moreH1980.
14So they cried outH7121 toH413 the LORDH3068H559: “PleaseH577, O LORDH3068, do notH408H4994 let us perishH6 on account of thisH2088 man’sH376 lifeH5315! Do notH408 chargeH5414 usH5921 with innocentH5355 bloodH1818! ForH3588 YouH859, O LORDH3068, have doneH6213 asH834 You pleasedH2654.”
15Then they picked upH5375 JonahH3124 and cast himH2904 intoH413 the seaH3220, and the ragingH2197 seaH3220 grew calmH5975.
16Then the menH582H3374 fearedH3372 the LORDH3068 greatlyH1419, and they offeredH2076 a sacrificeH2077 to the LORDH3068 and madeH5087 vowsH5088 to Him.
17Now the LORDH3068 had appointedH4487 a greatH1419 fishH1709 to swallowH1104 JonahH3124, and JonahH3124 spentH1961 threeH7969 daysH3117 and threeH7969 nightsH3915 in the bellyH4578 of the fishH1709.
