2 Samuel 1
(1 Samuel 31:1–6; 1 Chronicles 10:1–6)
AfterH310 the deathH4194 of SaulH7586, DavidH1732 returnedH7725 from the slaughterH5221 ofH853 the AmalekitesH6002 and stayedH3427H1732 in ZiklagH6860 twoH8147 daysH3117. 2On the thirdH7992H2009 dayH3117 a manH376 with tornH7167 clothesH899 and dustH127 onH5921 his headH7218 arrivedH935 fromH4480 Saul’sH7586 campH4264H5973. When he cameH935 toH413 DavidH1732, he fellH5307 to the groundH776 to pay him homageH7812.
3“WhereH335H2088 have you come fromH935?” DavidH1732 askedH559.
“I have escapedH4422 from the IsraeliteH3478 campH4264,” he repliedH559.
4“WhatH4100 was the outcomeH1961H1697?” DavidH1732 askedH559H413. “PleaseH4994 tellH5046 me.”
“The troopsH5971 fledH5127 fromH4480 the battleH4421,” he repliedH559. “ManyH7235 ofH4480 them fellH5307 and diedH4191. AndH1571 SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 are also deadH4191.”
5Then DavidH1732H413 askedH559 the young manH5288 who had brought him the reportH5046, “HowH349 do you knowH3045 thatH3588 SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 are deadH4191?”
6“I happenedH7122H7136 to be on MountH2022 GilboaH1533,” he repliedH559, “and thereH2009 was SaulH7586, leaningH8172 onH5921 his spearH2595, withH2009 the chariotsH7393H1167 and the cavalryH6571 closing in on himH1692. 7When he turned aroundH6437H310 and saw meH7200, he called outH7121 to meH413, and I answeredH559, ‘Here I amH2005!’
8‘WhoH4310 are youH859?’ he askedH559.
So I toldH559 himH413, ‘I amH595 an AmalekiteH6003.’
9Then he begged meH559H413, ‘StandH5975H4994 over meH5921 and kill meH4191, forH3588 agonyH7661 has seized meH270, butH3588 my lifeH5315 stillH3605 lingersH5750.’
10So I stoodH5975 over himH5921 and killed himH4191, becauseH3588 I knewH3045 thatH3588 afterH310 he had fallenH5307 he could notH3808 surviveH2421. And I tookH3947 the crownH5145 thatH834 was onH5921 his headH7218 and the bandH685 thatH834 was onH5921 his armH2220, and I have brought themH935 hereH2008 toH413 my lordH113.”
11Then DavidH1732 took holdH2388 of his own clothesH899 and tore themH7167, and allH3605 the menH582 whoH834 were with himH854 did the sameH1571. 12They mournedH5594 and weptH1058 and fastedH6684 untilH5704 eveningH6153 forH5921 SaulH7586 andH5921 his sonH1121H5921 JonathanH3083, and for the peopleH5971 of the LORDH3068H5921 and the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, becauseH3588 they had fallenH5307 by the swordH2719.
13And DavidH1732 inquiredH559 ofH413 the young manH5288 who had brought him the reportH5046, “WhereH335H2088 are you fromH859?”
“I am the sonH1121H376 of a foreignerH1616,” he answeredH559. “I amH595 an AmalekiteH6003.”
14So DavidH1732 askedH559 himH413, “WhyH349 were you notH3808 afraidH3372 to liftH7971 your handH3027 to destroyH7843 the LORD’sH3068 anointedH4899?” 15Then DavidH1732 summonedH7121 oneH259 of the young menH5288 and saidH559, “GoH5066, executeH6293 him!” So the young man struck him downH5221, and he diedH4191. 16For DavidH1732 had saidH559 to the AmalekiteH413, “Your bloodH1818 be onH5921 your own headH7218 becauseH3588 your own mouthH6310 has testifiedH6030 against you, sayingH559, ‘IH595 killedH4191 the LORD’sH3068 anointedH4899.’”
