The Burden against Nineveh
(Jonah 1:1–3)
1This is the burdenH4853 against NinevehH5210, the bookH5612 of the visionH2377 of NahumH5151 the ElkoshiteH512:
2The LORDH3068 is a jealousH7072 and avengingH5358 GodH410;the LORDH3068 is avengingH5358 and fullH1167 of wrathH2534.The LORDH3068 takes vengeanceH5358 on His foesH6862and reservesH5201 wrath for His enemiesH341.3The LORDH3068 is slowH750 to angerH639and greatH1419 in powerH3581;the LORDH3068 will by no meansH3808leave the guilty unpunishedH5352.His pathH1870 is in the whirlwindH5492 and stormH8183,and cloudsH6051 are the dustH80 beneath His feetH7272.4He rebukesH1605 the seaH3220 and dries it upH3001;He makes allH3605 the riversH5104 run dryH2717.BashanH1316 and CarmelH3760 witherH535,and the flowerH6525 of LebanonH3844 wiltsH535.5The mountainsH2022 quakeH7493 before HimH4480,and the hillsH1389 melt awayH4127;the earthH776 tremblesH5375 at His presenceH6440—the worldH8398 and allH3605 its dwellersH3427.6WhoH4310 can withstandH6440H5975 His indignationH2195?WhoH4310 can endureH6965 His burning angerH2740H639?His wrathH2534 is poured outH5413 like fireH784;even rocksH6697 are shatteredH5422 before HimH4480.
7The LORDH3068 is goodH2896,a strongholdH4581 in the dayH3117 of distressH6869;He cares forH3045 those who trustH2620 in Him.8But with an overwhelmingH5674 floodH7858He will makeH6213 an endH3617 of Nineveh1and pursueH7291 His enemiesH341 into darknessH2822.
9WhateverH4100 you plotH2803 againstH413 the LORDH3068,HeH1931 will bringH6213 to an endH3617.AfflictionH6869 will notH3808 rise upH6965a second timeH6471.10ForH3588 they will be entangledH5440 as withH5704 thornsH5518and consumedH398 like the drinkH5435 of a drunkardH5433—like stubbleH7179 that is fullyH4392 dryH3002.11From youH4480, O Nineveh, comes forthH3318a plotterH2803 of evilH7451 againstH5921 the LORDH3068,a counselorH3289 of wickednessH1100.
12This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559:
“ThoughH518 they are alliedH8003H3651 and numerousH7227,yetH3651 they will be cut downH1494 and pass awayH5674.Though I have afflicted youH6031, O Judah,I will afflictH6031 you noH3808 longerH5750.13For I will nowH6258 breakH7665 their yokeH4132 from your neckH5921and tear awayH5423 your shacklesH4147.”
14The LORDH3068 has issued a commandH6680 concerning youH5921, O Nineveh:
“There will be noH3808 descendantsH2232to carry on your nameH8034H5750.I will cut offH3772 the carved imageH6459 and cast idolH4541from the houseH1004 of your godsH430;I will prepareH7760 your graveH6913,forH3588 you are contemptibleH7043.”
15LookH2009 toH5921 the mountainsH2022—the feetH7272 of one who brings good newsH1319,who proclaimsH8085 peaceH7965!CelebrateH2287 your feastsH2282, O JudahH3063;fulfillH7999 your vowsH5088.ForH3588 the wickedH1100 will neverH3808 againH3254H5750 march throughH5674 you;they will be utterlyH3605 cut offH3772.
