Mark 1
(Isaiah 40:1–5; Matthew 3:1–17; Luke 3:1–22; John 1:19–34)
1This is the beginningG746 of theG3588 gospelG2098 of JesusG2424 ChristG5547, the SonG5207 of GodG2316.1 2AsG2531 it is writtenG1125 inG1722 IsaiahG2268 theG3588 prophetG4396:2
4JohnG2491 theG3588 BaptistG907 appearedG1096 inG1722 theG3588 wildernessG2048, preachingG2784 a baptismG908 of repentanceG3341 forG1519 the forgivenessG859 of sinsG266. 5People went outG1607 toG4314 himG846G3588 from allG3956 of JerusalemG2415 andG2532 theG3588 countrysideG5561 of JudeaG2449. ConfessingG1843 theirG846 sinsG266, they were baptizedG907 byG5259 himG846 inG1722 theG3588 JordanG2446 RiverG4215.
JohnG2491 wasG1510 clothed inG1746 camel’sG2574 hairG2359, withG2532 a leatherG1193 beltG2223 aroundG4012 hisG846 waistG3751. His food wasG2068 locustsG200 andG2532 wildG66 honeyG3192. 7AndG2532 he proclaimedG2784G3004: “AfterG3694 meG1473 will comeG2064 OneG3588 more powerfulG2478 than IG1473, theG3588 strapsG2438 ofG3588 whoseG3739 sandalsG5266 I amG1510 notG3756 worthyG2425 to stoop downG2955 and untieG3089. 8IG1473 baptizeG907 youG4771 with waterG5204,5 butG1161 HeG846 will baptizeG907 youG4771 withG1722 the HolyG40 SpiritG4151.6”
InG1722 thoseG1565 daysG2250 JesusG2424 cameG2064 fromG575 NazarethG3478 in GalileeG1056 andG2532 was baptizedG907 byG5259 JohnG2491 inG1519 theG3588 JordanG2446. 10As soonG2532G2112 as Jesus came upG305 out ofG1537 theG3588 waterG5204, He sawG37087 theG3588 heavensG3772 breaking openG4977 andG2532 theG3588 SpiritG4151 descendingG2597 onG1519 HimG846 likeG5613 a doveG4058. 11AndG2532 a voiceG5456 cameG1096 fromG1537 heavenG3772: “YouG4771 areG1510 MyG1473 belovedG27 SonG5207; inG1722 YouG4771 I am well pleasedG2106.”
The Temptation and Preaching of Jesus
(Matthew 4:1–17; Luke 4:1–15)
At onceG2112 theG3588 SpiritG4151 droveG1544G846 Jesus intoG1519 theG3588 wildernessG2048, 13andG2532 He wasG1510 there for fortyG5062 daysG2250, being temptedG3985 byG5259 SatanG4567. He wasG1510 withG3326 theG3588 wild animalsG2342, andG2532 theG3588 angelsG32 ministeredG1247 to HimG846.
AfterG3326 theG3588 arrestG3860 of JohnG2491, JesusG2424 wentG2064 intoG1519 GalileeG1056 and proclaimedG2784 theG3588 gospelG2098 of GodG2316.8 15“TheG3588 timeG2540 is fulfilledG4137,” He saidG3004, “andG2532 theG3588 kingdomG932 of GodG2316 is nearG1448. RepentG3340 andG2532 believeG4100 inG1722 theG3588 gospelG2098!”
The First Disciples
(Matthew 4:18–22; Luke 5:1–11; John 1:35–42)
16AsG2532 Jesus was walkingG3855 besideG3844 theG3588 SeaG2281 of GalileeG1056, He sawG3708 SimonG4613 andG2532 his brotherG80 AndrewG406. They were casting a netG906 intoG1722 theG3588 seaG2281, forG1063 they wereG1510 fishermenG231. 17“Come, followG1205G3694 MeG1473,” JesusG2424 saidG2036G846, “andG2532 I will makeG4160 youG4771 fishersG231 of menG444.” 18AndG2532 at onceG2112 they leftG863 their netsG1350 and followedG190 HimG846.
Going onG4260 a littleG3641 farther, He sawG3708 JamesG2385 son of ZebedeeG2199 andG2532 hisG846 brotherG80 JohnG2491. TheyG846 were inG1722 aG3588 boatG4143, mendingG2675 their netsG1350. 20ImmediatelyG2112 Jesus calledG2564 themG846, andG2532 they leftG863 theirG846 fatherG3962 ZebedeeG2199 inG1722 theG3588 boatG4143 withG3326 theG3588 hired menG3411 and followedG565G3694 HimG846.
Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit
(Luke 4:31–37)
21ThenG2532 Jesus and His companions wentG1531 toG1519 CapernaumG2584, andG2532 right awayG2112 Jesus enteredG1525G1519 theG3588 synagogueG4864 on theG3588 SabbathG4521 and began to teachG1321. 22The people were astonishedG1605 atG1909 HisG846 teachingG1322, becauseG1063 He taughtG1510G1321 asG5613 one who hadG2192 authorityG1849, andG2532 notG3756 asG5613 theG3588 scribesG1122.
SuddenlyG2112 a manG444 withG1722 an uncleanG169 spiritG4151 cried outG349 inG1722 theG3588 synagogueG4864: 24“WhatG5101 do YouG4771 want with usG1473, JesusG2424 of NazarethG3479? Have You comeG2064 to destroyG622 usG1473? I knowG1492 whoG5101 YouG4771 areG1510—theG3588 HolyG40 One of GodG2316!”
25ButG2532 JesusG2424 rebukedG2008 the spirit. “Be silentG5392!” He saidG3004. “ComeG1831 out ofG1537 himG846!” 26At thisG2532, theG3588 uncleanG169 spiritG4151 threw the man into convulsionsG4682G846 and cameG1831 outG1537 with a loud shriekG5455G5456G3173.
AllG537 the people were amazedG2284 and began to askG4802 one anotherG4314G1438, “WhatG5101 isG1510 thisG3778? A newG2537 teachingG1322 withG2596 authorityG1849! He commandsG2004 evenG2532 theG3588 uncleanG169 spiritsG4151, andG2532 they obeyG5219 HimG846!” 28AndG2532 theG3588 newsG189 aboutG846 Jesus spreadG1831 quicklyG2112 throughG3837G1519 theG3588 wholeG3650 regionG4066 of GalileeG1056.
Jesus Heals at Peter’s House
(Matthew 8:14–17; Luke 4:38–41)
29As soon asG2532G2112 Jesus and His companions had leftG1831G1537 theG3588 synagogueG4864, they wentG2064 withG3326 JamesG2385 andG2532 JohnG2491 toG1519 theG3588 homeG3614 of SimonG4613 andG2532 AndrewG406. 30Simon’sG4613 mother-in-lawG3994 was sick in bedG2621 with a feverG4445, andG2532 they promptly toldG3004G2112 Jesus aboutG4012 herG846. 31SoG2532 He went toG4334 her, tookG2902 herG3588 by the handG5495, and helped her upG1453G846. TheG3588 feverG4446 leftG863 herG846, andG2532 she began to serveG1247 themG846.
That eveningG3798G1096, afterG3753 sunsetG2246G1416, people broughtG5342 toG4314 Jesus allG3956 theG3588 sickG2192G2560 andG2532 demon-possessedG1139, 33andG2532 theG3588 wholeG3650 townG4172 gatheredG1510G1996 atG4314 theG3588 doorG2374. 34AndG2532 He healedG2323 manyG4183 who wereG2192 illG2560 with variousG4164 diseasesG3554 andG2532 drove outG1544 manyG4183 demonsG1140. ButG2532 He would not allowG3756G863 theG3588 demonsG1140 to speakG2980, becauseG3754 they knewG1492 who He wasG846.
Jesus Prays and Preaches
(Luke 4:42–44)
35Early in the morningG4404, while it wasG3029 still darkG1773, Jesus got upG450 and went outG1831G2532G565 toG1519 a solitaryG2048 placeG5117G2546 to prayG4336. 36SimonG4613 andG2532 his companionsG3588G3326G846 went to look forG2614 HimG846, 37andG2532 when they foundG2147 HimG846, they saidG3004G846, “EveryoneG3956 is looking forG2212 YouG4771!”
38ButG2532 Jesus answeredG3004G846, “Let us goG71 onG237 toG1519 theG3588 neighboringG2192 townsG2969 soG2443 I can preachG2784 thereG1563 as wellG2532, forG1063 that is whyG1519G3778 I have comeG1831.” 39So He wentG2064 throughoutG1519G3650 GalileeG1056, preachingG2784 inG1519 theirG846 synagoguesG4864 andG2532 driving outG1544 demonsG1140.
The Leper’s Prayer
(Leviticus 14:1–32; Matthew 8:1–4; Luke 5:12–16)
40ThenG2532 a leperG30159 cameG2064 toG4314 Jesus, beggingG3870 on his kneesG2532G1120: “IfG1437 You are willingG2309, You canG1410 make me cleanG2511G1473.”
Moved with compassionG4697,10 Jesus reached outG1614 HisG846 handG5495 and touchedG680 the man. “I am willingG2309,” He saidG3004. “Be cleanG2511!” 42AndG2532 immediatelyG2112 theG3588 leprosyG3014 leftG565G575 himG846, andG2532 the man was cleansedG2511.
Jesus promptly sent him awayG2112G1544G846 with a stern warningG1690G846: 44“SeeG3708 that you don’t tellG2036G3367 anyone. ButG235 goG5217, showG1166 yourselfG4572 to theG3588 priestG2409 andG2532 present the offeringG4374 MosesG3475 prescribedG4367 forG4012 yourG4771 cleansingG2512, asG1519 a testimonyG3142 to themG846.”11
45ButG1161 theG3588 man went outG1831 and openlyG4183 beganG756 to proclaimG2784 andG2532 spreadG1310 theG3588 newsG3056.
ConsequentlyG5620, JesusG846 could no longerG3371G1410 enterG1525G1519 a townG4172 in plain viewG5320, butG235 He stayedG1510 outG1854 inG1909 solitaryG2048 placesG5117. YetG2532 people cameG2064 toG4314 HimG846 from every quarterG3840.
