Deuteronomy 1
(Exodus 33:1–6)
1TheseH428 are the wordsH1697 thatH834 MosesH4872 spokeH1696 toH413 allH3605 IsraelH3478 in the wildernessH4057 east ofH5676 the JordanH3383—in the ArabahH6160 oppositeH4136 SuphH5489—betweenH996 ParanH6290H996 and TophelH8603, LabanH3837, HazerothH2698, and DizahabH1774.
2It is an eleven-dayH259H6240H3117 journey from HorebH27221 toH5704 Kadesh-barneaH6947 by wayH1870 of MountH2022 SeirH8165. 3In the fortiethH705 yearH8141, on the first dayH259H2320 of the eleventhH6249H6240 monthH2320, MosesH4872 proclaimedH1696 toH413 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 allH3605 thatH834 the LORDH3068 had commandedH6680 himH853 concerning themH413. 4This was afterH310 he had defeatedH5221 SihonH5511 kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, whoH834 livedH3427 in HeshbonH2809, and thenH853 at EdreiH154 had defeated OgH5747 kingH4428 of BashanH1316, whoH834 livedH3427 in AshtarothH6252.
5On the east sideH5676 of the JordanH3383 in the landH776 of MoabH4124, MosesH4872 beganH2974 to explainH874 thisH2063 lawH8451, sayingH559:2
6The LORDH3068 our GodH430 saidH1696 to usH413 at HorebH2722: “You have stayedH3427 at thisH2088 mountainH2022 long enoughH7227. 7ResumeH6437 your journeyH5265 and goH935 to the hill countryH2022 of the AmoritesH567; go toH413 allH3605 the neighboring peoplesH7934 in the ArabahH6160, in the hill countryH2022, in the foothillsH8219,3 in the NegevH5045, and along the seacoastH3220H2348 to the landH776 of the CanaanitesH3669 and to LebanonH3844, as far asH5704 the greatH1419 RiverH5104 EuphratesH6578.
8SeeH7200, I have placedH5414 the landH776 before youH6440. EnterH935 and possessH3423 the landH776 thatH834 the LORDH3068 sworeH7650 He would giveH5414 to your fathersH1 AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327, and JacobH3290, and to their descendantsH2233 after themH310.”
Moses Appoints Leaders
(Exodus 18:13–27)
9At thatH1931H559 timeH6256 I saidH559 to youH413, “I cannotH3808H3201 carry the burdenH5375 for youH853 aloneH905. 10The LORDH3068 your GodH430 has multipliedH7235 youH853, so that todayH3117 you areH2009 as numerousH7230 as the starsH3556 in the skyH8064. 11May the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of your fathersH1, increase youH3254H5921 a thousandH505 times overH6471 and blessH1288 youH853 asH834 He has promisedH1696. 12But howH349 can I bearH5375 your troublesH2960, burdensH4853, and disputesH7379 all by myselfH905? 13ChooseH3051 for yourselves wiseH2450, understandingH995, and respectedH3045 menH582 from each of your tribesH7626, and I will appoint themH7760 as your leadersH7218.”
14And you answeredH6030 meH853 and saidH559, “WhatH834 you proposeH1696 to doH6213 is goodH2896H1697.”
15So I tookH3947 the leadersH7218 of your tribesH7626, wiseH2450 and respectedH3045 menH582, and appointedH5414 themH853 as leadersH7218 over youH5921—as commandersH8269 of thousandsH505H8269, of hundredsH3967H8269, of fiftiesH2572H8269, and of tensH6235, and as officersH7860 for your tribesH7626.
16At thatH1931H559 timeH6256 I chargedH6680 your judgesH8199: “HearH8085 the disputes betweenH996 your brothersH251, and judgeH8199 fairlyH6664 betweenH996 a manH376H996 and his brotherH251H996 or a foreign residentH1616. 17Show no partialityH3808H5234H6440 in judgingH4941; hearH8085 both smallH6996 and great alikeH1419. Do notH3808 be intimidatedH1481 byH6440 anyoneH376, forH3588 judgmentH4941 belongs to GodH430H1931. And bringH7126 to meH413 any caseH1697 too difficultH7185 for you, and I will hear itH8085.”
18And at thatH1931 timeH6256 I commandedH6680 youH853 allH3605 the thingsH1697 you were to doH6213.
Twelve Spies Sent Out
(Numbers 13:1–33)
And just asH834 the LORDH3068 our GodH430 had commanded usH6680, we set outH5265 from HorebH2722 and wentH1980 towardH1870 the hill countryH2022 of the AmoritesH567, through allH3605 the vastH1419 and terrifyingH3372H1931 wildernessH4057 you have seenH7200. When we reachedH935H5704 Kadesh-barneaH6947, 20I saidH559: “You have reachedH935H5704 the hill countryH2022 of the AmoritesH567, whichH834 the LORDH3068 our GodH430 is givingH5414 us. 21SeeH7200, the LORDH3068 your GodH430 has placedH5414 the landH776 before youH6440. Go upH5927 and take possession ofH3423 it asH834 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of your fathersH1, has told youH1696. Do notH408 be afraidH3372H408 or discouragedH2865.”
22Then all of youH3605 approachedH7126 meH413 and saidH559, “Let us sendH7971 menH582 ahead of usH6440 to search outH2658 the landH776 and bring usH7725 wordH1697 of what routeH1870 to followH5927 and which citiesH5892 to enterH935H413.”
23The planH1697 seemedH5869 good to meH3190, so I selectedH3947 twelveH8147H6240H582 menH376 from among you, oneH259 from each tribeH7626. 24They leftH6437 and went upH5927 into the hill countryH2022, and cameH935 toH5704 the ValleyH5158 of EshcolH812 and spied outH7270 the land. 25They tookH3947 some of the fruitH6529 of the landH776 in their handsH3027, carried it downH3381 to usH413, and brought usH7725 wordH1697H559: “It is a goodH2896 landH776 thatH834 the LORDH3068 our GodH430 is givingH5414 us.”
Israel’s Rebellion
(Numbers 14:1–12)
26But you were unwillingH3808H14 to go upH5927; you rebelledH4784 against the commandH6310 of the LORDH3068 your GodH430. 27You grumbledH7279 in your tentsH168 and saidH559H8135, “Because the LORDH3068 hates usH853, He has brought us outH3318 of the landH776 of EgyptH4714 to deliverH5414 usH853 into the handH3027 of the AmoritesH567 to be annihilatedH8045. 28WhereH575 can weH587 goH5927? Our brothersH251 have made our hearts meltH4549, sayingH559: ‘The peopleH5971 are largerH1419 and tallerH7311 than we areH4480; the citiesH5892 are largeH1419, with walls upH1219 to the heavensH8064. We evenH1571 sawH7200 the descendantsH1121 of the AnakimH6062 thereH8033.’”
29So I saidH559 to youH413: “Do notH3808 be terrifiedH6206H3808 or afraidH3372 of them! 30The LORDH3068 your GodH430, who goesH1980 before youH6440H1931, will fightH3898 for you, just asH3605 you saw HimH5869 doH6213 for youH854 in EgyptH4714 31and in the wildernessH4057, whereH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 carried youH5375, asH834 a manH376 carriesH5375 his sonH1121, allH3605 the wayH1870 by whichH834 you traveledH1980 untilH5704 you reachedH935H5704 thisH2088 placeH4725.”
32But in spiteH1697 of all thisH2088, you did notH369 trustH539 the LORDH3068 your GodH430, 33who wentH1980 before youH6440 on the journeyH1870, in the fireH784 by nightH3915 and in the cloudH6051 by dayH3119, to seek outH8446 a placeH4725 for you to campH2583 and to show youH7200 the roadH1870 to travelH1980.
Israel’s Penalty
(Numbers 14:20–35)
34When the LORDH3068 heardH8085 your wordsH1697, He grew angryH7107 and swore an oathH7650, sayingH559, 35“NotH518 oneH376 of theH428 menH582 of thisH2088 evilH7451 generationH1755 shall seeH7200 the goodH2896 landH776 I sworeH7650 to giveH5414 your fathersH1, 36exceptH2108 CalebH3612 sonH1121 of JephunnehH3312. HeH1931 will see itH7200, and I will giveH5414 himH853 and his descendantsH1121 the landH776 on whichH834 he has set footH1869, becauseH3282 he followedH310 the LORDH3068 wholeheartedlyH4390.”
37The LORDH3068 was also angryH599H1571 with me on your accountH1558, and He saidH559, “NotH3808 evenH1571 youH859 shall enterH935 the land. 38JoshuaH3091 sonH1121 of NunH5126, who standsH5975 before youH6440, will enterH1931H935 itH8033. Encourage himH2388, forH3588 heH1931 will enable IsraelH3478 to inheritH5157 the land. 39And the little onesH2945 you saidH559 would becomeH1961 captivesH957—your childrenH1121 whoH834 on that dayH3117 did notH3808 knowH3045 goodH2896 from evilH7451—will enterH935 the land that I will give themH5414, and theyH1992 will possess itH3423. 40But youH859 are to turn backH6437 and headH5265 for the wildernessH4057 along the routeH1870 to the RedH5488 SeaH3220.4”
The Defeat at Hormah
(Numbers 14:40–45)
41“We have sinnedH2398 against the LORDH3068,” you repliedH6030H559H413. “WeH587 will go upH5927 and fightH3898, asH3605 the LORDH3068 our GodH430 has commanded usH6680.” Then eachH376 of you put onH2296 his weaponsH3627 of warH4421, thinking it easyH1951 to go upH5927 into the hill countryH2022.
42But the LORDH3068 saidH559 to meH413, “TellH559 them notH3808 to go upH5927 and fightH3898, forH3588 I am notH369 with youH7130 to keep you fromH3808 defeatH5062 byH6440 your enemiesH341.”
43So I spokeH1696 to youH413, but you would notH3808 listenH8085. You rebelled againstH4784 the commandH6310 of the LORDH3068 and presumptuouslyH2102 went upH5927 into the hill countryH2022.
44Then the AmoritesH567 who livedH3427 inH1931 the hillsH2022 came outH3318 against youH7122 and chasedH7291 you likeH834H6213 a swarm of beesH1682. They routedH3807 youH853 from SeirH8165 all the wayH5704 to HormahH2767. 45And you returnedH7725 and weptH1058 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, butH3068 He would notH3808 listenH8085 to your voiceH6963 or give earH238 to youH413.
46For this reason you stayedH3427 in KadeshH6946 for a long timeH3117H7227—a very long timeH3117.
