Mark 6

1

(Matthew 13:53–58; Luke 4:16–30)

Jesus went onG1831 from thereG1564 andG2532 cameG2064 toG1519 HisG846 hometownG3968, accompanied byG190 HisG846 disciplesG3101. 2When the SabbathG4521 cameG1096, He beganG756 to teachG1321 inG1722 theG3588 synagogueG4864, andG2532 manyG4183 who heardG191 Him were astonishedG1605. “WhereG4159 did thisG3778 man get theseG3778 ideas?” they askedG3004. “WhatG5101 is this wisdomG4678 He has been givenG1325G3778? AndG2532 how can He performG1096G1223G846G3588G5495 suchG5108 miraclesG1411? 3Isn’tG1510G3756 thisG3778 theG3588 carpenterG5045, theG3588 sonG5207 of MaryG3137 andG2532 the brotherG80 of JamesG2385, JosesG2500,1 JudasG2455, andG2532 SimonG4613? Aren’tG1510G3756 HisG846 sistersG79 hereG5602 withG4314 usG1473 as wellG2532?” AndG2532 they took offenseG4624 atG1722 HimG846.

4ThenG2532 JesusG2424 saidG2036 to themG846, “OnlyG1487G3361 inG1722 hisG846 hometownG3968, amongG1722 hisG846 relativesG4773, andG2532 inG1722 hisG846 own householdG3614 isG1510 a prophetG4396 without honorG820.” 5So He could notG3756G1410 performG4160 any miraclesG1411 thereG1563, exceptG1487G3361 to layG2007 His handsG5495 on a fewG3641 of the sickG732 and healG2323 them. 6AndG2532 He was amazedG2296 atG1223 theirG846 unbeliefG570.

AndG2532 He wentG4013 aroundG2945 from village to villageG2968, teachingG1321 the people.

The Ministry of the Twelve

(Matthew 10:5–15; Luke 9:1–6)

7ThenG2532 Jesus calledG4341 theG3588 Twelve to HimG1427 andG2532 beganG756 to send them outG649G846 twoG1417 by twoG1417, givingG1325 themG846 authorityG1849 overG3588 uncleanG169 spiritsG4151. 8He instructedG3853 themG846 toG2443 takeG142 nothingG3367 butG1487G3361G3440 a staffG4464 forG1519 the journeyG3598—noG3361 breadG740, noG3361 bagG4082, noG3361 moneyG54752 inG1519 theirG3588 beltsG2223— 9and to wearG5265 sandalsG4547, but notG3361 a secondG1417 tunicG5509.

10AndG2532 He toldG2036 themG846, “WhenG3699G1437 you enterG1525G1519 a houseG3614, stayG3306 thereG1563 untilG2193G302 you leaveG1831 that areaG1564. 11IfG3739 anyoneG302 will not welcomeG3361G1209 youG4771 orG3366 listen toG191 youG4771, shakeG1621 theG3588 dustG5522 offG5270 yourG4771 feetG4228 when you leaveG1607 thatG1564 placeG5117, asG1519 a testimonyG3142 against themG846.”3

12So they set outG1831 and preachedG2784 thatG2443 the people should repentG3340. 13They also drove outG2532G1544 manyG4183 demonsG1140 andG2532 healedG2323 manyG4183 of the sickG732, anointingG218 them with oilG1637.

The Beheading of John

(Matthew 14:1–12; Luke 9:7–9)

14NowG2532 KingG935 HerodG2264 heard about thisG191, forG1063 Jesus’ nameG3686 had becomeG1096 well knownG5318, andG2532 people were sayingG2036,4 “JohnG2491 theG3588 BaptistG907 has risenG1453 fromG1537 the deadG3498! ThatG3778 is whyG1223 miraculous powersG1411 are at workG1754 inG1722 himG846.” 15OthersG243 were sayingG2036, “He isG1510 ElijahG2243,” andG1161 still othersG243, “He is a prophetG4396, likeG5613 oneG1520 of theG3588 prophetsG4396 of old.”

16But whenG1161 HerodG2264 heard thisG191, he saidG2036, “JohnG2491, whomG3739 IG1473 beheadedG607, has risenG1453 from the dead!” 17ForG1063 HerodG2264 himselfG846 had orderedG649 thatG3588 JohnG2491 be arrestedG2902 andG2532 boundG1210G846 and imprisonedG1722G5438, on account ofG1223 hisG846 brotherG80 Philip’sG5376 wifeG1135 HerodiasG2266, whom Herod had marriedG1060. 18ForG1063 JohnG2491 had been tellingG2036 HerodG2264, “It is not lawfulG3756G1832 for youG4771 to haveG2192 yourG4771 brother’sG80 wifeG1135!”

19SoG1161 HerodiasG2266 held a grudgeG1758 againstG846 John andG2532 wantedG2309 to killG615 himG846. ButG2532 she had been unableG3756G1410, 20becauseG1063 HerodG2264 fearedG5399 JohnG2491 andG2532 protectedG4933 himG846, knowingG1492 that heG846 was a righteousG1342 andG2532 holyG40 manG435. WhenG2532 he heardG191 John’s words, he was greatly perplexedG4183G639; yetG2532 he listenedG191 to himG846 gladlyG2234.

21

OnG3588 Herod’s birthdayG1077, her opportunityG2121G2250 aroseG1096. HerodG2264 heldG4160 a banquetG1173 forG3588 hisG846 noblesG3175 andG2532 military commandersG5506 andG2532 theG3588 leadingG4413 men of GalileeG1056. 22When theG3588 daughterG2364 of HerodiasG22665 cameG1525 andG2532 dancedG3738, she pleasedG700 HerodG2264 andG2532 his guestsG3588G4873, andG1161 theG3588 kingG935 saidG2036 to theG3588 girlG2877, “AskG154 meG1473 for whateverG3739 you wishG1437G2309, andG2532 I will giveG1325 it to youG4771.” 23AndG2532 he sworeG3660 to herG846, “WhateverG4183 you askG1437G154 of meG1473, I will giveG1325 youG4771, up toG2193 halfG2255 myG1473 kingdomG932!”

24ThenG2532 she went outG1831 and askedG2036 herG846 motherG3384, “WhatG5101 should I requestG154?”

AndG1161 her mother answeredG2036, “TheG3588 headG2776 of JohnG2491 theG3588 BaptistG907.”

25At onceG2532G2112 the girl hurried backG1525G3326G4710 toG4314 theG3588 kingG935 with her requestG154: “I wantG2309 you to giveG1325 meG1473 theG3588 headG2776 of JohnG2491 theG3588 BaptistG910 onG1909 a platterG4094 immediatelyG1824.”

26

TheG3588 kingG935 wasG1096 consumed with sorrowG4036, but because ofG1223 his oathsG3727 andG2532 his guestsG3588G345, he did not wantG3756G2309 to refuseG114 herG846. 27SoG2532 without delayG2112, theG3588 kingG935 commanded thatG2004 John’sG846 headG2776 be brought inG5342. He sentG649 an executionerG4688, who wentG565 and beheadedG607 himG846 inG1722 theG3588 prisonG5438. 28The man broughtG5342G846 John’s headG2776 onG1909 a platterG4094 andG2532 presentedG1325 itG846 to theG3588 girlG2877, who gaveG1325 itG846 to herG846 motherG3384.

29WhenG2532 John’s disciplesG3101 heard aboutG191 this, they cameG2064 andG2532 tookG142 hisG846 bodyG4430 andG2532 placedG5087 itG846 inG1722 a tombG3419.

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

(Matthew 14:13–21; Luke 9:10–17; John 6:1–15)

30MeanwhileG2532, theG3588 apostlesG652 gatheredG4863 aroundG4314 JesusG2424 andG2532 brought Him newsG518G846 of allG3956G3745 they had doneG4160 andG2532 taughtG1321. 31AndG2532 He saidG3004 to themG846, “ComeG1205 with MeG2596 privatelyG4771G846G2398 toG1519 a solitaryG2048 placeG5117, andG2532 let us restG373 for a whileG3641.” ForG1063 manyG4183 people wereG1510 comingG2064 andG2532 goingG5217, andG2532 they did not even have timeG3761G2119 to eatG5315.

32SoG2532 they went awayG565 inG1722 a boatG4143 byG2596 themselvesG2398 toG1519 a solitaryG2048 placeG5117. 33ButG2532 manyG4183 people sawG3708 themG846 leavingG5217 andG2532 recognizedG1921 them. They ran togetherG4936 on footG3979 fromG575 allG3956 theG3588 townsG4172 andG2532 arrived beforeG4281 themG846. 34WhenG2532 Jesus stepped ashoreG1831 and sawG3708 a largeG4183 crowdG3793, He had compassionG4697 onG1909 themG846, becauseG3754 they wereG1510 likeG5613 sheepG4263 withoutG3361G2192 a shepherdG4166. AndG2532 He beganG756 to teachG1321 themG846 many thingsG4183.

35By nowG2532 the hourG5610 wasG1096 alreadyG2235 lateG4183. So theG3588 disciplesG3101 cameG4334 toG846 Jesus and saidG2036, “ThisG3588 isG1510 a desolateG2048 placeG5117, andG2532 the hourG5610 is alreadyG2235 lateG4183. 36DismissG630 the crowd soG2443 they can goG565 toG1519 theG3588 surroundingG2945 countrysideG68 andG2532 villagesG2968 and buyG59 themselvesG1438 somethingG5101 to eatG5315.”

37ButG1161 Jesus toldG611G2036 themG846, “YouG4771 giveG1325 themG846 something to eatG5315.”

They askedG3004 HimG846, “Should we go outG565 and spendG59 two hundredG1250 denariiG12206 to giveG1325 all of themG846 breadG740 to eatG5315?”

38“GoG5217 and seeG3708 how manyG4214 loavesG740 you haveG2192,” He toldG3004 themG846.

AndG2532 after checkingG1097, they saidG3004, “FiveG4002—andG2532 twoG1417 fishG2486.”

39ThenG2532 Jesus directedG2004 themG846 to have the people sitG3956G347 in groupsG4849 onG1909 theG3588 greenG5515 grassG5528. 40SoG2532 they sat downG377 in groupsG4237 ofG2596 hundredsG1540 andG2532 fiftiesG4004.

41

TakingG2983 theG3588 fiveG4002 loavesG740 andG2532 theG3588 twoG1417 fishG2486 and looking upG308 toG1519 heavenG3772, Jesus spoke a blessingG2127 andG2532 brokeG2622 theG3588 loavesG740. ThenG2532 He gaveG1325 them toG3588 HisG846 disciplesG3101 toG2443 set beforeG3908 the people. AndG2532 He dividedG3307 theG3588 twoG1417 fishG2486 among them allG3956.

42

They allG3956 ateG5315 andG2532 were satisfiedG5526, 43andG2532 the disciples picked upG142 twelveG1427 basketfulsG2894G4138 of broken pieces of breadG2801 andG2532 fishG2486. 44AndG2532 there wereG1510 five thousandG4000 menG435 whoG3588 had eatenG5315 theG3588 loavesG740.

Jesus Walks on Water

(Matthew 14:22–33; John 6:16–21)

ImmediatelyG2112 Jesus madeG315 HisG846 disciplesG3101 getG1684 intoG1519 theG3588 boatG4143 andG2532 go on ahead ofG4254G1519G3588G4008 Him toG4314 BethsaidaG966, whileG2193 HeG846 dismissedG630 theG3588 crowdG3793. 46After bidding them farewellG657G846, He wentG565 up onG1519 theG3588 mountainG3735 to prayG4336.

47WhenG2532 eveningG3798 cameG1096, theG3588 boatG4143 wasG1510 inG1722 the middleG3319 of theG3588 seaG2281, andG2532 Jesus was aloneG3441 onG1909 landG1093. 48He could see thatG3708 the disciples were strainingG928 to rowG1722G3588G1643, becauseG1063 theG3588 windG417 wasG1510 againstG1727 themG846. AboutG4012 the fourthG5067 watchG5438 of theG3588 nightG3571,7 Jesus went outG2064 toG4314 themG846, walkingG4043 onG1909 theG3588 seaG2281. He intendedG2309 to pass byG3928 themG846, 49butG1161 when they sawG3708 HimG846 walkingG4043 onG1909 theG3588 seaG2281, they cried outG349, thinkingG1380 He wasG1510 a ghostG5326— 50forG1063 they allG3956 saw HimG3708 andG2532 were terrifiedG5015.

ButG1161 Jesus spoke upG2980 at onceG2112: “Take courageG2293! It isG1510 IG1473. Do notG3361 be afraidG5399.” 51ThenG2532 He climbedG305 intoG1519 theG3588 boatG4143 withG4314 themG846, andG2532 theG3588 windG417 died downG2869. AndG2532 the disciples were utterlyG3029G1537G4053 astoundedG1839, 52forG1063 they had not understoodG3756G4920 aboutG1909 theG3588 loavesG740, butG235 theirG846 heartsG2588 had beenG1510 hardenedG4456.

Jesus Heals at Gennesaret

(Matthew 14:34–36)

53WhenG2532 they had crossed overG1276, they landedG2064G1909G3588G1093 atG1519 GennesaretG1082 andG2532 mooredG4358 the boat. 54As soon asG2112 theyG846 gotG1831 out ofG1537 theG3588 boatG4143, the people recognizedG1921 Jesus 55and ran throughG4063 thatG1565 wholeG3650 regionG5561, carryingG756G4064 theG3588 sickG2560G2192 onG1909 matsG2895 to whereverG3699 they heardG191 He wasG1510. 56AndG2532 whereverG3699G302 He wentG1531G1519—villagesG2968 and townsG4172 and countrysidesG68—they laidG5087 theG3588 sickG770 inG1722 theG3588 marketplacesG58 andG2532 beggedG3870 HimG846 justG2579 to let them touchG680 theG3588 fringeG2899 of HisG846 cloakG2440. AndG2532 allG3745 whoG302 touchedG680 HimG846 were healedG4982.
