Mark 15

1

(Matthew 27:1–2)

EarlyG2112 in the morningG4404, theG3588 chief priestsG749, eldersG4245, scribesG1122, andG2532 theG3588 wholeG3650 SanhedrinG48921 devisedG4160 a planG4824. They boundG1210 JesusG2424, led Him awayG667, andG2532 handed Him overG3860 to PilateG4091.

2SoG2532 PilateG4091 questionedG1905 HimG846, “AreG1510 YouG4771 theG3588 KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453?”

“YouG4771 have said soG3004,” Jesus repliedG611G846G3004.

3AndG2532 theG3588 chief priestsG749 began to accuseG2723 HimG846 of many thingsG4183.

4ThenG1161 PilateG4091 questionedG1905 HimG846 againG3825G3004, “Have You no answerG3756G611G3762? LookG2400 how many chargesG4214 they are bringing againstG2723 YouG4771!”

5ButG1161 toG5620 Pilate’sG4091 amazementG2296, JesusG2424 made no further replyG611G3765G3762.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

(Matthew 27:15–23; Luke 23:13–25)

6Now it was Pilate’s customG1161 atG2596 the feastG1859 to releaseG630 toG846 the people2 aG1520 prisonerG1198 of their choosingG3739G3868. 7AndG1161 a man namedG3004 BarabbasG912 wasG1510 imprisonedG1210 withG3326 theG3588 rebelsG4955 whoG3748 had committedG4160 murderG5408 duringG1722 theG3588 insurrectionG4714. 8So theG3588 crowdG3793 went upG305 and beganG756 askingG154 Pilate to keep his customG2531G4160G846.

9“Do you wantG2309 me to releaseG630 to youG4771 theG3588 KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453?” PilateG4091 askedG611G846G3004. 10ForG1063 he knewG1097 it was out ofG1223 envyG5355 thatG3754 theG3588 chief priestsG749 had handed Jesus overG3860G846.

11ButG1161 theG3588 chief priestsG749 stirred upG383 theG3588 crowdG3793 toG2443 have him releaseG630 BarabbasG912 to themG846 insteadG3123.

Pilate Delivers Up Jesus

(Matthew 27:24–26)

12So PilateG4091 askedG611G2036 themG846 againG3825, “WhatG5101 thenG3767 do you wantG2309 me to doG4160 with theG3739 One you callG3004 theG3588 KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453?”

13AndG1161 they shoutedG2896 backG3825, “CrucifyG4717 HimG846!”

14“WhyG1063?” askedG2036 PilateG4091. “WhatG5101 evilG2556 has He doneG4160?”

ButG1161 they shoutedG2896 all the louderG4057, “CrucifyG4717 HimG846!”

15AndG1161 wishingG1014 toG4160 satisfyG2425 theG3588 crowdG3793, PilateG4091 releasedG630 BarabbasG912 to themG846. ButG2532 he had JesusG2424 floggedG5417, and handed Him overG3860 toG2443 be crucifiedG4717.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

(Isaiah 50:4–11; Matthew 27:27–31; Luke 22:63–65; John 19:1–15)

16ThenG1161 theG3588 soldiersG4757 led Jesus awayG520G846 intoG2080 theG3588 palaceG833 (thatG3739 isG1510, the PraetoriumG4232) andG2532 calledG4779 theG3588 wholeG3650 company togetherG4686. 17They dressedG1737 HimG846 in a purple robeG4209, twisted togetherG4120 a crownG4735 of thornsG174, and set it onG4060 HisG846 head. 18AndG2532 they beganG756 to saluteG782 HimG846: “HailG5463, KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453!”

19

They kept strikingG5180 HisG846 headG2776 with a staffG2563 andG2532 spitting onG1716 HimG846. AndG2532 they knelt downG5087G3588G1119 and bowedG4352 before HimG846. 20AfterG2532G3753 they had mockedG1702 HimG846, they removedG1562 theG3588 purpleG4209 robe andG2532 putG1746 HisG846 ownG2398 clothesG2440 back on HimG846. ThenG2532 they led Him outG1806G846 toG2443 crucifyG4717 HimG846.

The Crucifixion

(Psalm 22:1–31; Matthew 27:32–44; Luke 23:26–43; John 19:16–27)

21Now SimonG4613 of CyreneG2956, theG3588 fatherG3962 of AlexanderG223 andG2532 RufusG4504, was passing byG3855 on his way inG2064 fromG575 the countryG68, andG2532 the soldiers forcedG29 him toG2443 carryG142 theG3588 crossG4716 ofG846 Jesus.

22

They broughtG5342 Jesus toG1909 a placeG5117 called GolgothaG1115, whichG3739 meansG1510G3177 The PlaceG5117 of the SkullG2898. 23ThereG2532 they offeredG1325 HimG846 wineG3631 mixed with myrrhG4669, butG1161 HeG3739 did not takeG3756G2983 it.

24AndG2532 they crucifiedG4717 HimG846.

They also dividedG2532G1266 HisG846 garmentsG2440 by castingG906 lotsG2819 to decideG1909 whatG5101 each of them would takeG142.3

25

It wasG1510 the thirdG5154 hourG56104 whenG2532 they crucifiedG4717 HimG846. 26AndG2532 theG3588 chargeG156 inscribedG1923 against HimG846 readG1510G1924:

THEG3588 KINGG935 OF THEG3588 JEWSG2453.

27Along withG4862 Jesus, they crucifiedG4717 twoG1417 robbersG3027,5 oneG1520 onG1537 His rightG1188 andG2532 oneG1520 onG1537 HisG846 leftG2176.6

29AndG2532 those whoG3588 passed byG3899 heaped abuse onG987 HimG846, shakingG2795 theirG846 headsG2776 andG2532 sayingG3004, “AhaG3758! You who are going to destroyG2647 theG3588 templeG3485 andG2532 rebuildG3618 it inG1722 threeG5140 daysG2250, 30come downG2597 fromG575 theG3588 crossG4716 and saveG4982 YourselfG4572!”

31In the same wayG3668G2532, theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG3326 scribesG1122 mockedG1702 Him amongG4314 themselvesG240, sayingG2036, “He savedG4982 othersG243, but He cannotG3756G1410 saveG4982 HimselfG1438! 32Let theG3588 ChristG5547, theG3588 KingG935 of IsraelG2474, come downG2597 nowG3568 fromG575 theG3588 crossG4716, so thatG2443 we may seeG3708 andG2532 believeG4100!” And evenG2532 those whoG3588 were crucifiedG4957 withG4862 HimG846 beratedG3679 HimG846.

The Death of Jesus

(Psalm 22:1–31; Matthew 27:45–56; Luke 23:44–49; John 19:28–30)

From the sixthG1623 hourG5610 untilG2193 the ninthG1766 hourG56107 darknessG4655 cameG1096 overG1909 allG3650 theG3588 landG1093. 34At theG3588 ninthG1766 hourG5610, JesusG2424 cried outG994 in a loud voiceG3173G5456, “EloiG1682, EloiG1682, lemaG2982 sabachthaniG4518?” whichG3739 meansG1510G3177, “MyG1473 GodG2316, MyG1473 GodG2316, whyG1519G5101 have You forsakenG1459 MeG1473?”8

35WhenG2532 someG5100 of thoseG3588 standing nearbyG3936 heardG191 this, they saidG2036, “BeholdG2400, He is callingG5455 ElijahG2243.”

36AndG1161 someoneG5100 ranG5143 andG2532 filledG1072 a spongeG4699 with sour wineG3690.9 He put it onG4060 a reedG2563 and held it up for Jesus to drinkG4222G846,10 sayingG3004, “Leave Him aloneG863. Let us seeG3708 ifG1487 ElijahG2243 comesG2064 to take Him downG2507G846.”

37ButG1161 JesusG2424 let outG863 a loud cryG3173G5456 and breathed His lastG1606. 38AndG2532 theG3588 veilG2665 of theG3588 templeG3485 was tornG4977 inG1519 twoG1417 fromG575 topG509 toG2193 bottomG2736.

39WhenG1161 theG3588 centurionG2760 standing thereG3936 in front ofG1537G1727 Jesus sawG3708 how He had breathed His lastG1606,11 he saidG2036, “TrulyG230 thisG3778 manG444 wasG1510 the SonG5207 of GodG2316!”

40AndG1161 there wereG1510 alsoG2532 womenG1135 watchingG2334 fromG575 a distanceG3113. AmongG1722 themG3739 were MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094, MaryG3137 theG3588 motherG3384 of JamesG2385 theG3588 youngerG3398 andG2532 of JosesG2500,12 andG2532 SalomeG4539. 41These women had followedG190 Jesus andG2532 ministeredG1247 to HimG846 whileG3753 He wasG1510 inG1722 GalileeG1056, andG2532 there were manyG4183 otherG243 women whoG3588 had come upG4872 toG1519 JerusalemG2414 with HimG846.

The Burial of Jesus

(Isaiah 53:9–12; Matthew 27:57–61; Luke 23:50–56; John 19:38–42)

42NowG2532 it wasG1096 alreadyG2235 eveningG3798. SinceG1893 it wasG1510 Preparation DayG3904 (thatG3739 isG1510, the day before the SabbathG4315), 43JosephG2501 ofG575 ArimatheaG707, a prominentG2158 Council memberG1010 whoG3739 himselfG846G2532 wasG1510 waiting forG4327 theG3588 kingdomG932 of GodG2316, boldlyG5111 wentG2064G1525 toG4314 PilateG4091 to ask forG154 theG3588 bodyG4983 of JesusG2424.

44

PilateG4091 was surprisedG2296 to hear thatG1487 Jesus was already deadG2235G2348, soG2532 he summonedG4341 theG3588 centurionG2760 to askG1905 ifG1487 this was so. 45When Pilate had confirmedG1097 it withG575 theG3588 centurionG2760, he grantedG1433 theG3588 bodyG4430 to JosephG2501.

46SoG2532 Joseph boughtG59 a linen clothG4616, took downG2507 the body of Jesus, wrapped it inG1750 theG3588 clothG4616, andG2532 placedG5087 it inG1722 a tombG3419 thatG3739 had beenG1510 cutG2998 out ofG1537 the rockG4073. ThenG2532 he rolledG4351 a stoneG3037 againstG1909 theG3588 entranceG2374 to theG3588 tombG3419. 47MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094 andG2532 MaryG3137 theG3588 mother of JosephG250013 sawG2334 whereG4225 His body was placedG5087.
