Mark 7
(Matthew 15:1–9)
1ThenG2532 theG3588 PhariseesG5330 andG2532 someG5100 of theG3588 scribesG1122 who had comeG2064 fromG575 JerusalemG2414 gathered aroundG4863G4314 Jesus, 2andG2532 they sawG3708 someG5100 ofG3588 HisG846 disciplesG3101 eatingG2068G3588G740 with handsG5495 that were defiledG2839—thatG3778 isG1510, unwashedG449.
3NowG1063 in holdingG2902 to theG3588 traditionG3862 of theG3588 eldersG4245, theG3588 PhariseesG5330 andG2532 allG3956 theG3588 JewsG2453 do notG3756 eatG2068 untilG1437G3361 they washG3538 their handsG5495 ceremoniallyG4435.1 4AndG2532 on returning fromG575 the marketG58, they do not eatG3756G2068 unlessG1437G3361 they washG907. AndG2532 there areG1510 manyG4183 otherG243 traditions for themG3880 to observeG2902, including the washingG909 of cupsG4221, pitchersG3582, kettlesG5473, andG2532 couches for diningG2825.2
5SoG2532 theG3588 PhariseesG5330 andG2532 scribesG1122 questionedG1905 Jesus: “WhyG1223G5101 do YourG4771 disciplesG3101 notG3756 walkG4043 according toG2596 theG3588 traditionG3862 of theG3588 eldersG4245? InsteadG235, they eatG2068G3588G740 with defiledG2839 handsG5495.”
Jesus answeredG2036 themG846, “IsaiahG2268 prophesiedG4395 correctlyG2573 aboutG4012 youG4771 hypocritesG5273, asG5613 it is writtenG1125:
8You have disregardedG863 theG3588 commandmentG1785 of GodG2316 to keepG2902 theG3588 traditionG3862 of menG444.4”
9He went on to sayG2532G2036, “You neatly set asideG2573G114 theG3588 commandG1785 of GodG2316 toG2443 maintainG50835 yourG4771 own traditionG3862. 10ForG1063 MosesG3475 saidG2036, ‘HonorG5091 yourG4771 fatherG3962 andG2532 yourG4771 motherG3384’6 andG2532 ‘Anyone whoG3588 cursesG2551 his fatherG3962 orG2228 motherG3384 must be put to deathG2288G5053.’7 11ButG1161 youG4771 say thatG3004 ifG1437 a manG444 saysG2036 toG3588 his fatherG3962 orG2228 motherG3384, ‘WhateverG3739G1437 you would have receivedG5623 fromG1537 meG1473 is CorbanG2878’ (thatG3739 isG1510, a gift devotedG1435 to God), 12heG846 is no longerG3765 permittedG863 to doG4160 anythingG3762 for hisG3588 fatherG3962 orG2228 motherG3384. 13Thus you nullifyG208 theG3588 wordG3056 of GodG2316 byG3588 the traditionG3862 you have handed downG3860. AndG2532 you doG4160 soG5108 in manyG4183 suchG3946 matters.”
What Defiles a Man
(Matthew 15:10–20)
Once againG3825 Jesus calledG4341 theG3588 crowdG3793 to Him and saidG2036, “All of youG3956, listen toG191 MeG1473 andG2532 understandG4920: 15NothingG3762 that entersG1531G1519 aG3588 manG444 from the outsideG1855 canG1410 defileG2840 himG846; butG235 the thingsG3588 that comeG1607 out ofG1537 aG3588 manG444, these areG1510 whatG3588 defileG2840 him.”8
AfterG3753 Jesus had leftG1525G575 theG3588 crowdG3793 and gone intoG1519 the houseG3624, HisG846 disciplesG3101 inquired aboutG1905G846 theG3588 parableG3850.
18“AreG1510 youG4771 stillG2532 soG3779 dullG801?” He askedG3004. “Do you not understandG3756G3539? NothingG3956 thatG3588 entersG1531G1519 aG3588 manG444 from the outsideG1855 canG3756G1410 defileG2840 himG846, 19becauseG3754 it does not enterG3756G1531G1519 hisG846 heartG2588, butG235 it goes intoG1519 theG3588 stomachG2836 and thenG2532 is eliminatedG1607G1519G3588G856.” (Thus allG3956 foodsG1033 are cleanG2511.)9
He continuedG2036: “WhatG3588 comesG1607 out ofG1537 aG3588 manG444, thatG1565 is what defilesG2840 him. 21ForG1063 fromG1537 withinG2081 theG3588 heartsG2588 of menG444 comeG1607 evilG2556 thoughtsG1261, sexual immoralityG4202, theftG2829, murderG5408, adulteryG3430,10 22greedG4124, wickednessG4189, deceitG1388, debaucheryG766, envyG3788G4190, slanderG988, arroganceG5243, and foolishnessG877. 23AllG3956 theseG3778 evilsG4190 comeG1607 from withinG2081, andG2532 these are what defileG2840 aG3588 manG444.”
The Faith of the Gentile Woman
(Matthew 15:21–28)
Jesus leftG450 that placeG1564 and wentG565 toG1519 theG3588 regionG3725 of TyreG5184.11 Not wanting anyoneG2309G3762 to knowG1097 He was there, He enteredG1525G1519 a houseG3614, butG2532 was unableG3756G1410 to escape their noticeG2990. 25InsteadG235, a womanG1135 whoseG3739 little daughterG2365G846 hadG2192 an uncleanG169 spiritG4151 soonG2112 heardG191 aboutG4012 JesusG846, and she cameG2064 and fellG4363 atG4314 HisG846 feetG4228. 26NowG1161 she wasG1510 a GreekG1674 womanG1135 ofG3588 SyrophoenicianG4949 originG1085, andG2532 she kept askingG2065 Jesus to driveG1544 theG3588 demonG1140 out ofG1537 herG846 daughterG2364.
27“FirstG4412 letG863 theG3588 childrenG5043 have their fillG5526,” He saidG2036G846. “ForG1063 it isG1510 notG3756 rightG2570 to takeG2983 theG3588 children’sG5043 breadG740 andG2532 tossG906 it to theG3588 dogsG2952.”
28“YesG3483, LordG2962,” she repliedG611G2532G3004G846, “evenG2532 theG3588 dogsG295212 underG5270 theG3588 tableG5132 eatG2068G575 theG3588 children’sG3813 crumbsG5589.”
29ThenG2532 Jesus toldG2036 herG846, “Because ofG1223 thisG3778 answerG3056, you may goG5217. TheG3588 demonG1140 has leftG1831G1537 yourG4771 daughterG2364.” 30AndG2532 she wentG565 homeG1519G846G3588G3624 and foundG2147 her childG3813 lyingG906 onG1909 theG3588 bedG2825, andG2532 theG3588 demonG1140 was goneG1831.
The Deaf and Mute Man
(Matthew 9:27–34)
31ThenG2532G3825 Jesus leftG1831G1537 theG3588 regionG3725 of TyreG5184 and wentG2064 throughG1223 SidonG4605 toG1519 theG3588 SeaG2281 of GalileeG1056 and intoG303G3319 theG3588 regionG3725 of the DecapolisG1179.13 32Some people broughtG5342 to HimG846 a man who was deafG2974 andG2532 hardly able to speakG3424, andG2532 they beggedG3870 Jesus to placeG2007 His handG5495 on himG846.
33So Jesus took himG618G846 asideG2596 privatelyG2398, away fromG575 theG3588 crowdG3793, and putG906 HisG846 fingersG1147 intoG1519 the man’s earsG3775. ThenG2532 He spitG4429 and touchedG680 the man’s tongueG1100. 34AndG2532 looking upG308 toG1519 heavenG3772, He sighed deeplyG4727 andG2532 saidG3004 to himG846, “EphphathaG2188!” (whichG3739 meansG1510, “Be openedG1272!”). 35ImmediatelyG211214 the man’s earsG189 were openedG455 andG2532 hisG846 tongueG1100 was releasedG3588G1199G3089, andG2532 he began to speakG2980 plainlyG3723.
Jesus orderedG1291 themG846 not to tell anyoneG3004G3367. ButG1161 the moreG3745 HeG846 orderedG1291 themG846, the more widelyG4053G3123 they proclaimedG2784 it. 37The people were utterly astonishedG1605G5249 and saidG3004, “He has doneG4160 all thingsG3956 wellG2573! He makesG4160 evenG2532 theG3588 deafG2974 hearG191 andG2532 theG3588 muteG216 speakG2980!”
