Mark 6

Teaching at Nazareth

11Jesus wentG1831 outG1831 fromG1564 thereG1564 and cameG2064 into 23His hometownG3968; and His disciplesG3101 followedG190 Him. 2And when the SabbathG4521 cameG1096, He beganG757 4to teachG1321 in the synagogueG4864; and 5the 6manyG4183 listenersG191 were astonishedG1605, sayingG3004, “WhereG4159 did thisG3778 ManG3778 learn theseG3778 thingsG3778, and whatG5101 is this wisdomG4678 that has been givenG1325 to Him, and suchG5108 7miraclesG1411 asG5108 theseG5108 performedG1096 by His handsG5495? 3Is thisG3778 not 8the carpenterG5045, 9the sonG5207 of MaryG3137 and brotherG80 of 10JamesG2385, JosesG2500, JudasG2455, and SimonG4613? And are 11His sistersG79 not hereG5602 with us?” And they tookG4624 12offenseG4624 at Him. 4JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “13A prophetG4396 is not dishonoredG820 exceptG1508 in 1415his hometownG3968 and amongG1722 his own relativesG4773, and in his own householdG3614.” 5And He couldG1410 not doG4160 anyG3762 16miracleG1411 thereG1563 exceptG1508 that He 17laidG2007 His handsG5495 onG2007 a fewG3641 sickG732 peopleG732 and healedG2323 them. 6And He wasG2296 amazedG2296 at their unbeliefG570.

18And He was goingG4013 aroundG4013G2945 the villagesG2968, teachingG1321.

The Twelve Sent Out

719And 20He summonedG4341 the twelveG1427 and beganG757 to sendG649 them outG649 21inG649 pairsG1417, and gaveG1325 them authorityG1849 over the uncleanG169 spiritsG4151; 822and He instructedG3853 them that they were to takeG142 nothingG3367 for their journeyG3598, exceptG1508 a mereG3441 staffG4464--noG3361 breadG740, noG3361 23bagG4082, noG3361 moneyG5475 in their beltG2223-- 9but 24to wearG5265 sandalsG4547; and He added, “Do not wearG1746 twoG1417 25tunicsG5509.” 10And He saidG3004 to them, “WhereverG3699G1437 you enterG1525 a houseG3614, stayG3306 thereG1563 untilG2193 you 26leaveG1831 townG1564. 11AnyG3739 placeG5117 that does not receiveG1209 you orG3366 listenG191 to you, as you goG1607 outG1607 fromG1564 thereG1564, 27shakeG1621 the dustG5529 28offG1621 the solesG5270 of your feetG4228 as a testimonyG3142 against them.” 1229And they wentG1831 outG1831 and 30preachedG2784 that people are to repentG3340. 13And they were castingG1544 outG1544 manyG4183 demonsG1140 and 31were anointingG218 with oilG1637 manyG4183 sickG732 peopleG732 and healingG2323 them.

John’s Fate Recalled

1432And KingG935 HerodG2264 heardG191 about it, for His nameG3686 had becomeG1096 wellG5318 knownG5318; and people were sayingG3004, “33JohnG2491 the BaptistG907 has risenG1453 from the deadG3498, and that is whyG1223 theseG3588 miraculousG1411 powersG1411 are at workG1754 in Him.” 15But othersG243 were sayingG3004, “He is 34ElijahG2243.” And othersG243 were sayingG3004, “He is 35a prophetG4396, likeG5613 oneG1520 of the prophetsG4396 of old.” 16But when HerodG2264 heardG191 about it, he kept sayingG3004, “JohnG2491, whomG3739 I beheadedG607, has risenG1453!”

17For HerodG2264 himselfG846 had sentG649 men and had JohnG2491 arrestedG2902 and boundG1210 in prisonG5438 on accountG1223 of 36HerodiasG2266, the wifeG1135 of his brotherG80 PhilipG5376, becauseG3754 he had marriedG1060 her. 18For JohnG2491 had been sayingG3004 to HerodG2264, “37It is not lawfulG1832 for you to haveG2192 your brother’sG80 wifeG1135.” 19And 38HerodiasG2266 heldG1758 aG1758 grudgeG1758 againstG1758 him and wantedG2309 to putG615 him toG615 deathG615, and couldG1410 not do so; 20for 39HerodG2264 wasG5399 afraidG5399 of JohnG2491, knowingG3609 that he was a righteousG1342 and holyG40 manG435, and he had been protectingG4933 him. And when he heardG191 him, he was veryG4183 perplexedG639; and yet he 40used to enjoyG2234 listeningG191 to him. 21An opportuneG2121 dayG2250 cameG1096 whenG3753 HerodG2264, on his birthdayG1077, 41heldG4160 a banquetG1173 for his noblesG3175 and militaryG5506 commandersG5506, and the leadingG4413 peopleG4413 42of GalileeG1056; 22and when the daughterG2364 of 43HerodiasG2266 herselfG846 cameG1525 inG1525 and dancedG3738, she pleasedG700 HerodG2264 and 44his dinnerG4873 guestsG4873; and the kingG935 saidG3004 to the girlG2877, “AskG154 me for whateverG3739G1437 you wantG2309, and I will giveG1325 it to you.” 23And he sworeG3660 to her, “WhateverG3739G1437 you askG154 of me, I will giveG1325 it to you, up to 45halfG2255 of my kingdomG932.” 24And she wentG1831 outG1831 and saidG3004 to her motherG3384, “WhatG5101 shall I askG154 for?” And she saidG3004, “The headG2776 of JohnG2491 the BaptistG907.” 25ImmediatelyG2117 she cameG1525 inG1525 a hurryG4710 to the kingG935 and askedG154, sayingG3004, “I wantG2309 you to giveG1325 me at onceG1824 the headG2776 of JohnG2491 the BaptistG910 on a platterG4094.” 26And although the kingG935 was veryG4036 sorryG4036, becauseG1223 of his oathsG3727 and 46his dinnerG345 guestsG345, he was unwillingG3756G2309 to refuseG114 her. 27ImmediatelyG2117 the kingG935 sentG649 an executionerG4688 and commandedG2004 him to bringG5342 back his headG2776. And he wentG565 and beheadedG607 him in the prisonG5438, 28and broughtG5342 his headG2776 on a platterG4094, and gaveG1325 it to the girlG2877; and the girlG2877 gaveG1325 it to her motherG3384. 29When his disciplesG3101 heardG191 about this, they cameG2064 and carriedG142 awayG142 his bodyG4430, and laidG5087 it in a tombG3419.

3047The 48apostlesG652 gatheredG4863 togetherG4863 with JesusG2424; and they reportedG518 to Him allG3956 that they had doneG4160 and taughtG1321. 31And He saidG3004 to them, “ComeG1205 away by yourselvesG4771G846 to a secludedG2048 placeG5117 and restG373 a littleG3641 whileG3641.” (For there were manyG4183 people comingG2064 and goingG5217, and 49they did not evenG3761 haveG2119 timeG2119 to eatG2068.) 3250And they wentG565 awayG565 in 51the boatG4143 to a secludedG2048 placeG5117 by themselvesG2398.

Five Thousand Men Fed

33The people sawG3708 them goingG5217, and manyG4183 recognizedG1921 them and ranG4936 thereG1563 togetherG4936 on footG3979 from allG3956 the citiesG4172, and gotG4281 thereG4281 aheadG4281 of them. 34When Jesus wentG1831 52ashoreG1831, He 53sawG3708 a largeG4183 crowdG3793, and He feltG4697 compassionG4697 for them becauseG3754 54they were likeG5613 sheepG4263 withoutG3361G2192 a shepherdG4166; and He beganG757 to teachG1321 them manyG4183 thingsG4183. 35And when it was alreadyG2235 lateG4183G5610, His disciplesG3101 cameG4334 upG4334 to Him and saidG3004, “55ThisG3588 placeG5117 is secludedG2048 and it is alreadyG2235 lateG5610G4183; 36sendG630 them awayG630 soG2443 thatG2443 they may goG565 into the surroundingG2945 countrysideG68 and villagesG2968 and buyG59 themselvesG1438 56somethingG5101 to eatG2068.” 37But He answeredG611 them, “You giveG1325 them something to eatG2068!” 57And they saidG3004 to Him, “Shall we goG565 and spendG59 twoG1250 hundredG1250 5859denariiG1220 on breadG740, and giveG1325 it to them to eatG2068?” 38But He saidG3004 to them, “HowG4214 manyG4214 loavesG740 do you haveG2192? GoG5217 lookG3708!” And when they foundG1097 outG1097, they saidG3004, “FiveG4002, and twoG1417 fishG2486.” 39And He orderedG2004 them allG3956 to reclineG347 by groupsG4849 on the greenG5515 grassG5528. 40They reclinedG377 in groupsG4237 of hundredsG1540 and fiftiesG4004. 41And He tookG2983 the fiveG4002 loavesG740 and the twoG1417 fishG2486, and lookingG308 upG308 towardG1519 heavenG3772, He 60blessedG2127 the food and brokeG2622 the loavesG740 and He gaveG1325 them to the disciplesG3101 again and again to setG3908 beforeG3908 them; and He dividedG3307 the twoG1417 fishG2486 among them allG3956. 42And they allG3956 ateG2068 and were satisfiedG5526; 43and they pickedG142 upG142 twelveG1427 fullG4138 61basketsG2894 of the brokenG2801 piecesG2801 of bread, and of the fishG2486. 44There were 62fiveG4000 thousandG4000 63menG435 who ateG2068 the loavesG740.

Jesus Walks on the Water

4564And immediatelyG2117 Jesus hadG315 His disciplesG3101 getG1684 into 65the boatG4143 and goG4254 aheadG4254 of Him to the otherG4008 sideG4008, to 66BethsaidaG966, whileG2193 He HimselfG846 dismissedG630 the crowdG3793. 46And after 67sayingG657 goodbyeG657 to them, He leftG565 68for the mountainG3735 to prayG4336.

47When it was eveningG3798, the boatG4143 was in the middleG3319 of the seaG2281, and He was aloneG3441 on the landG1093. 48SeeingG3708 them 69strainingG928 at the oarsG1643--for the windG417 was againstG1727 them--at aboutG4012 the 7071fourthG5067 watchG5438 of the nightG3571, He cameG2064 to them, walkingG4043 on the seaG2281; and He intendedG2309 to passG3928 by them. 49But when they sawG3708 Him walkingG4043 on the seaG2281, they thoughtG1380 that it was a ghostG5326, and they criedG349 outG349; 50for they allG3956 sawG3708 Him and were 72terrifiedG5015. But immediatelyG2117 He spokeG2980 with them and saidG3004 to them, “73TakeG2293 courageG2293; it is I, 74do not beG5399 afraidG5399.” 51ThenG2532 He gotG305 into 75the boatG4143 with them, and the windG417 stoppedG2869; and they were utterlyG3029G1537G4053 astonishedG1839, 52for 76they 77had not gainedG4920 any insightG4920 from the incident of the loavesG740, but 78their heartsG2588 79were hardenedG4456.

Healing at Gennesaret

5380When they had crossedG1276 overG1276 they cameG2064 to landG1093 at GennesaretG1082, and mooredG4358 at the shore. 54And when they gotG1831 outG1831 of the boatG4143, immediatelyG2117 the people recognizedG1921 Him, 55and ranG4063 aboutG4063 that entireG3650 countryG5561 and beganG757 carryingG4064 hereG4064 andG4064 thereG4064 on their palletsG2895 thoseG3588 who were sickG2560, 81to whereverG3699 they heardG191 He was. 56And whereverG3699 He enteredG1531 villagesG2968, orG2228 citiesG4172, orG2228 a countrysideG68, they were layingG5087 the sickG770 in the marketplacesG58 and imploringG3870 Him that they might justG2579 82touchG681 83the fringeG2899 of His cloakG2440; and allG3745 whoG3745 touchedG681 it were being 84healedG4982.
