Context of Jonah 2:3

1Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish, 2and he said, “I called out of my distress to the Lord, And He answered me. I called for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. For You threw me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current flowed around me. All Your breakers and waves passed over me. 4So I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ 5Water encompassed me to the point of death. The deep flowed around me, Seaweed was wrapped around my head.

Commentaries on Jonah 2:3

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3All thy billows and thy waves passed over me - This may be understood literally; while the fish, in whose belly he was, sought its pleasure or sustenance in the paths of the deep, the waves and billows of the sea were rolling above. This line seems borrowed from Psalm 42:7.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3For Thou hadst (“didst”) cast me into the deep - Jonah continues to describe the extremity of peril, from which God had already delivered him. Sweet is the memory of perils past. For they speak of God‘s Fatherly care. Sweet is it, to the prophet to tell God of His mercies; but this is sweet only to the holy, for God‘s mercy convicts the careless of ingratitude. Jonah then tells God, how He had cast him vehemently forth into the “eddying depth,” where…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-9Jonah realized that the Lord had kindly saved him by sending the fish. He then created a prayer similar to a psalm. The prayer's careful structure follows the pattern of a personal song of thanks. This suggests Jonah may have written it after the event, as he remembered his feelings and worries.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. thou hadst cast ... thy billows ... thy waves--Jonah recognizes the source whence his sufferings came. It was no mere chance, but the hand of God which sent them. Compare Job's similar recognition of God's hand in calamities, Job 1:21; 2:10; and David's, 2Sa 16:5-11.Read the comment
