Mark 7
Followers of Tradition
11The PhariseesG5330 and someG5100 of the scribesG1122 gatheredG4863 to Him after they cameG2064 2from JerusalemG2414, 2and sawG3708 that someG5100 of His disciplesG3101 were eatingG2068 their breadG740 with 34unholyG2839 handsG5495, that is, unwashedG449. 3(For the PhariseesG5330 and allG3956 the other JewsG2453 do not eatG2068 unlessG1437G3361 they 5carefullyG4435 washG3538 their handsG5495, thereby holdingG2902 firmlyG2902 to the 6traditionG3862 of the eldersG4245; 4and when they come from the marketplaceG58, they do not eatG2068 unlessG1437G3361 they 7completelyG907 cleanseG907 themselves; and there are manyG4183 otherG243 thingsG4183 whichG3739 they have receivedG3880 as traditions to firmlyG2902 holdG2902, such as the 8washingG909 of 9cupsG4221, pitchersG3582, and copperG5473 potsG5473.) 5And the PhariseesG5330 and the scribesG1122 askedG1905 Him, “WhyG1223G5101 do Your disciplesG3101 not walkG4043 inG2596 accordanceG2596 withG2596 the 10traditionG3862 of the eldersG4245, but eatG2068 their breadG740 with 1112unholyG2839 handsG5495?” 6But He saidG3004 to them, “RightlyG2573 did IsaiahG2268 prophesyG4395 aboutG4012 you hypocritesG5273, as it is writtenG1125: ‘13ThisG3778 peopleG2992 honorsG5091 Me with their lipsG5491, But their heartG2588 is farG4206 awayG568G4206 from Me.714And inG3155 vainG3155 do they worshipG4576 Me, TeachingG1321 as doctrinesG1319 the commandmentsG1778 of menG444.’ 8NeglectingG863 the commandmentG1785 of GodG2316, you holdG2902 to the 15traditionG3862 of menG444.”
9He was alsoG2532 sayingG3004 to them, “You are expertsG2573 at settingG114 asideG114 the commandmentG1785 of GodG2316 inG2443 orderG2443 toG2443 keepG5083 your 16traditionG3862. 10For MosesG3475 saidG3004, ‘17HonorG5091 your fatherG3962 and your motherG3384’; and, ‘18The one who speaksG2551 evilG2551 ofG2551 fatherG3962 orG2228 motherG3384, is 19certainly to be putG5053 to deathG2288’; 11but you sayG3004, ‘IfG1437 a personG444 saysG3004 to his fatherG3962 orG2228 his motherG3384, whateverG3739G1437 I haveG1537 that would helpG5623 you is 20CorbanG2878 (that is, 21givenG1435 to God),’ 12you noG3765 longerG3765 allowG863 him to doG4160 anythingG3762 for his fatherG3962 orG2228 his motherG3384; 13thereby invalidatingG208 the wordG3056 of GodG2316 by your 22traditionG3862 whichG3739 you have handedG3860 downG3860; and you doG4160 manyG4183 thingsG4183 suchG3946 as that.”
The Heart of Mankind
14After He calledG4341 the crowdG3793 to Him againG3825, He began sayingG3004 to them, “ListenG191 to Me, allG3956 of you, and understandG4920: 15there is nothingG3762 outsideG1855 the personG444 which canG1410 defileG2840 him if it goesG1531 into him; but the things which comeG1607 outG1607 of the personG444 are what defileG2840 the personG44423.”
17And whenG3753 He later enteredG1525 a houseG3624, awayG575 from the crowdG3793, 24His disciplesG3101 askedG1905 Him about the parableG3850. 18And He saidG3004 to them, “Are you soG3779 lackingG801 inG801 understandingG801 asG2532 wellG2532? Do you not understandG3539 that whateverG3956 goesG1531 into the personG444 fromG1855 outsideG1855 cannotG1410G3756 defileG2840 him, 19becauseG3754 it does not goG1531 into his heartG2588, but into his stomachG2836, and 25is eliminatedG1519G856G1607?” (Thereby He declaredG2511 26allG3956 foodsG1033 27cleanG2511.) 20And He was sayingG3004, “28That which comesG1607 outG1607 of the personG444, that is what defilesG2840 the personG444. 21For fromG2081 withinG2081, out of the 29heartsG2588 of peopleG444, comeG1607 the evilG2556 thoughtsG1261, acts of sexualG4202 immoralityG4202, theftsG2829, murdersG5408, acts of adulteryG3430, 22deedsG4124 ofG4124 greedG4124, wickednessG4189, deceitG1388, indecentG766 behaviorG766, 3031envyG3788G4190, slanderG988, 32prideG5243, and foolishnessG877. 23AllG3956 theseG3778 evilG4190 thingsG4190 comeG1607 fromG2081 withinG2081 and defileG2840 the personG444.”
The Syrophoenician Woman
2433NowG1161 Jesus gotG450 upG450 and wentG565 fromG1564 thereG1564 to the regionG3725 of 34TyreG518435. And when He had enteredG1525 a houseG3614, He wantedG2309 noG3762 oneG3762 to knowG1097 about it; and yet He couldG1410 not escapeG2990 noticeG2990. 25But after hearingG191 aboutG4012 Him, a womanG1135 whoseG3739 littleG2365 daughterG2365 hadG2192 an uncleanG169 spiritG4151 immediatelyG2117 cameG2064 and fellG4363 at His feetG4228. 26NowG1161 the womanG1135 was a 36GentileG1674, of SyrophoenicianG4949 descentG1085. And she repeatedly askedG2065 Him to castG1544 the demonG1140 outG1544 of her daughterG2364. 27And He was sayingG3004 to her, “LetG863 the childrenG5043 be satisfiedG5526 firstG4413, for it is not 37goodG2570 to takeG2983 the children’sG5043 breadG740 and throwG906 it to the 38dogsG2952.” 28But she answeredG611 and saidG3004 to Him, “YesG3483, LordG2962, but evenG2532 the dogsG2952 underG5270 the tableG5132 feedG2068 on the children’sG3813 crumbsG5589.” 29And He saidG3004 to her, “BecauseG1223 of thisG3778 39answerG3056, goG5217; the demonG1140 has goneG1831 outG1831 of your daughterG2364.” 30And after goingG565 backG565 to her homeG3624, she foundG2147 the childG3813 40lyingG906 on the bedG2825, and the demonG1140 goneG1831.
3141AgainG3825 He leftG1831 the regionG3725 of 42TyreG5184 and cameG2064 throughG1223 SidonG4605 to 43the SeaG2281 of GalileeG1056, withinG303G3319 the regionG3725 of 44DecapolisG1179. 32And they broughtG5342 to Him oneG2974 who was deafG2974 and hadG3424 difficultyG3424 speakingG3424, and they beggedG3870 Him to 45layG2007 His handG5495 on him. 33And Jesus 46tookG618 him asideG618 from the crowdG3793, by himselfG2398, and putG906 His fingersG1147 in his earsG3775, and after 47spittingG4429, He touchedG681 his tongueG1100 with the saliva; 34and lookingG308 upG308 to heavenG3772 with a deepG4727 48sighG4727, He saidG3004 to him, “EphphathaG2188!” that is, “Be openedG1272!” 35And his earsG189 were openedG455, and the 49impedimentG1199 of his tongueG1100 was 50removedG3089, and he began speakingG2980 plainlyG3723. 36And 51He gaveG1291 them ordersG1291 not to tellG3004 anyoneG3367; but the moreG3745 He orderedG1291 them, the moreG3123 widelyG4053 they 52continued to proclaimG2784 it. 37And they were utterlyG5249 astonishedG1605, sayingG3004, “He has doneG4160 allG3956 thingsG3956 wellG2573; He makesG4160 evenG2532 those who are deafG2974 hearG191, and those who are unableG216 toG216 talkG216, speakG2980.”
