Jesus before Pilate
11EarlyG2117 in the morningG4404 the chiefG749 priestsG749 with the eldersG4245, scribesG1122, and the entireG3650 23CouncilG4892 immediatelyG2117 heldG4160 a consultationG4824; and they boundG1210 JesusG2424 and ledG667 Him awayG667, and turnedG3860 Him overG3860 to PilateG4091. 24PilateG4091 questionedG1905 Him: “So You are the KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” And He answeredG611G3004 him, “It is as you sayG3004.” 3And the chiefG749 priestsG749 started accusingG2723 Him 5of manyG4183 thingsG4183. 4But PilateG4091 questionedG1905 Him againG3825, sayingG3004, “Do You offerG611 nothingG3762 inG611 answerG611? SeeG2396 howG4214 manyG4214 chargesG2723 they are bringingG2723 againstG2723 You!” 5But JesusG2424 6saidG611 nothingG3762 furtherG3765 inG611 answerG611, soG5620 PilateG4091 wasG2296 amazedG2296.
67NowG1161 at the Passover FeastG1859 he used to releaseG630 for them any oneG1520 prisonerG1198 whomG3739 they requestedG3868. 7And the one namedG3004 BarabbasG912 had beenG1510 imprisonedG1210 with the rebelsG4714 whoG3748 had committedG4160 murderG5408 in the revoltG4714. 8And the crowdG3793 wentG305 upG305 and beganG757 askingG154 Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to doG4160 for them. 9PilateG4091 answeredG611 them, sayingG3004, “Do you wantG2309 me to releaseG630 for you the KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” 10For he was awareG1097 that the chiefG749 priestsG749 had handedG3860 Him overG3860 becauseG1223 of envyG5355. 11But the chiefG749 priestsG749 stirredG383 upG383 the crowdG3793 8to ask him to releaseG630 BarabbasG912 for them insteadG3123. 12And respondingG611 againG3825, PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “ThenG3767 whatG5101 shall I doG4160 with Him whomG3739 you callG3004 the KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” 13They shoutedG2896 9backG3825, “CrucifyG4717 Him!” 14But PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “WhyG1063, whatG5101 10evilG2556 has He doneG4160?” But they shoutedG2896 allG4057 theG4057 moreG4057, “CrucifyG4717 Him!” 15IntentG1014 on satisfyingG4160G2425 the crowdG3793, PilateG4091 releasedG630 BarabbasG912 for them, and after having JesusG2424 11floggedG5417, he handedG3860 Him overG3860 to be crucifiedG4717.
Jesus Is Mocked
1612NowG1161 the soldiersG4757 tookG520 Him awayG520 into 13the 14palaceG833 (that is, the PraetoriumG4232), and they calledG4779 togetherG4779 the wholeG3650 Roman 1516cohortG4686. 17And they dressedG1737 Him in 17purpleG4209, and after twistingG4120 togetherG4120 a crownG4735 of thornsG174, they putG4060 it on Him; 18and they beganG757 salutingG782 Him: “HailG5463, KingG935 of the JewsG2453!” 19And they repeatedly beatG5180 His headG2776 with a 18reedG2563 and spitG1716 onG1716 Him, and kneelingG1119G5087, they bowedG4352 downG4352 beforeG4352 Him. 20And afterG3753 they had mockedG1702 Him, they tookG1562 the 19purpleG4209 cloak offG1562 Him and putG1746 His own garmentsG2440 on Him. And they ledG1806 Him outG1806 to crucifyG4717 Him.
2120And they compelledG29 a passer-byG3855 comingG2064 from the countryG68, SimonG4613 ofG2956 CyreneG2956 (the fatherG3962 of AlexanderG223 and 21RufusG4504), to carryG142 His crossG4716.
The Crucifixion
2222ThenG2532 they broughtG5342 Him to the placeG5117 23GolgothaG1115, whichG3739 is translatedG3177, PlaceG5117 of a SkullG2898. 23And they tried to giveG1325 Him 24wineG3631 mixedG4669 withG4669 myrrhG4669; but He did not takeG2983 it. 24And they crucifiedG4717 Him, and 25dividedG1266 upG1266 His garmentsG2440 amongG1266 themselves, castingG906 26lotsG2819 for them to decide 27whatG5101 eachG5101 manG5101 would takeG142. 25NowG1161 it was the 2829thirdG5154 hourG5610 30whenG2532 they crucifiedG4717 Him. 26The inscriptionG1923 of the chargeG156 against Him 31readG1924, “32THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWSG2453.”
27And they crucifiedG4717 twoG1417 33rebelsG3027 with Him, oneG1520 on His rightG1188 and oneG1520 on His leftG2176.34 29ThoseG3588 passingG3899 by were 35hurlingG987 abuseG987 at Him, 36shakingG2795 their headsG2776 and sayingG3004, “HaG3758! You who are going to 37destroyG2647 the templeG3485 and rebuildG3618 it in threeG5140 daysG2250, 30saveG4982 YourselfG4572 by comingG2597 downG2597 from the crossG4716!” 31In the sameG3668 wayG3668 the chiefG749 priestsG749 alsoG2532, along with the scribesG1122, were mockingG1702 Him amongG4314 themselvesG240 and sayingG3004, “38He savedG4982 othersG243; 39He cannotG1410G3756 saveG4982 HimselfG1438! 32Let this ChristG5547, 40the KingG935 of IsraelG2474, comeG2597 downG2597 nowG3568 from the crossG4716, soG2443 thatG2443 we may seeG3708 and believeG4100!” 41ThoseG3588 who were crucifiedG4957 with Him were alsoG2532 insultingG3679 Him.
3342When the 4344sixthG1623 hourG5610 cameG1096, darknessG4655 45fellG1096 overG1909 the wholeG3650 landG1093 untilG2193 the 4647ninthG1729 hourG5610. 34At the 4849ninthG1729 hourG5610 JesusG2424 criedG994 outG994 with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, “50EloiG1682, EloiG1682, lemaG2982 sabaktaneiG4518?” whichG3739 is translatedG3177, “My GodG2316, My GodG2316, whyG1519G5101 have You forsakenG1459 Me?” 35And when someG5100 of the bystandersG3936 heardG191 Him, they began sayingG3004, “LookG2396! He is callingG5455 for ElijahG2243!” 36And someoneG5100 ranG5143 and filledG1072 a spongeG4699 with sourG3690 wineG3690, putG4060 it on a reedG2563, and gaveG4222 Him aG4222 drinkG4222, sayingG3004, “51LetG863 us seeG3708 ifG1487 ElijahG2243 comesG2064 to takeG2507 Him downG2507.” 3752But JesusG2424 letG863 outG863 a loudG3173 cryG5456, and 53diedG1606. 3854And the veilG2665 of the templeG3485 was tornG4977 in twoG1417 from topG509 to bottomG2736. 3955And when the centurionG2760, who was standingG3936 56rightG1727 inG1727 frontG1727 of Him, sawG3708 that He 57diedG1606 inG3779 thisG3779 wayG3779, he saidG3004, “TrulyG230 thisG3778 ManG444 was 58the SonG5207 of GodG2316!”
4059NowG1161 there were alsoG2532 some womenG1135 watchingG2334 from a distanceG3113, amongG1722 whomG3739 were MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094, MaryG3137 the motherG3384 of 60JamesG2385 61the 62LessG3398 and JosesG2500, and 63SalomeG4539. 41WhenG3753 He was in GalileeG1056, they used to followG190 Him and 64serveG1247 Him; and there were manyG4183 otherG243 womenG243 who cameG4872 up with Him to JerusalemG2414.
Jesus Is Buried
4265When eveningG3798 had alreadyG2235 comeG1096, sinceG1893 it was 66the preparationG3904 dayG3904, that is, the dayG4315 beforeG4315 theG4315 SabbathG4315, 43JosephG2501 of ArimatheaG707 cameG2064, a 67prominentG2158 memberG1010 ofG1010 theG1010 CouncilG1010, whoG3739 was himselfG846 alsoG2532 68waitingG4327 for the kingdomG932 of GodG2316; and he 69gatheredG5111 upG5111 courageG5111 and wentG1525 inG1525 beforeG4314 PilateG4091, and askedG154 for the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424. 44NowG1161 PilateG4091 wonderedG2296 ifG1487 He was deadG2348 byG2235 thisG2235 timeG2235, and summoningG4341 the centurionG2760, he questionedG1905 him as to whetherG1487 He was alreadyG2235 deadG599. 45And after learningG1097 this from 70the centurionG2760, he grantedG1433 the bodyG4430 to JosephG2501. 46Joseph boughtG59 a linenG4616 clothG4616, tookG2507 Him downG2507, wrappedG1750 Him in the linenG4616 clothG4616, and laidG2698 Him in a tombG3418 whichG3739 had beenG1510 cutG2998 outG2998 in the rockG4073; and he rolledG4351 a stoneG3037 againstG1909 the entranceG2374 of the tombG3419. 4771MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094 and MaryG3137 the mother of JosesG2500 were watchingG2334 to see whereG4226 He was laidG5087.
