Mark 10
Jesus’ Teaching about Divorce
11SettingG450 outG450 fromG1564 thereG1564, Jesus wentG2064 to the regionG3725 of JudeaG2449 and beyondG4008 the JordanG2446; crowdsG3793 gatheredG4848 to Him againG3825, and, 2as He was accustomedG1486, He onceG3825 moreG3825 began to teachG1321 them.
2And some PhariseesG5330 cameG4334 upG4334 to Jesus, testingG3985 Him, and began questioningG1905 Him whetherG1487 it was lawfulG1832 for a manG435 to 3divorceG630 his wifeG1135. 3And He answeredG611 and saidG3004 to them, “WhatG5101 did MosesG3475 commandG1781 you?” 4They saidG3004, “4MosesG3475 permittedG2010 a man to writeG1125 a 5certificateG975 of divorceG647 and 6sendG630 his wife awayG630.” 5But JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “78BecauseG4314 of your hardnessG4641 ofG4641 heartG4641 he wroteG1125 you thisG3778 commandmentG1785. 6But 9from the beginningG746 of creationG2937, God 10createdG4160 them maleG733 and femaleG2338. 711For thisG3778 reasonG1752 a manG444 shall leaveG2641 his fatherG3962 and motherG338412, 813and the twoG1417 shall becomeG1510G1519 oneG1520 fleshG4561; soG5620 they are noG3765 longerG3765 twoG1417, but oneG1520 fleshG4561. 9ThereforeG3767, whatG3739 GodG2316 has joinedG4801 togetherG4801, noG3361 personG444 is to separateG5563.”
10And in the houseG3614 the disciplesG3101 againG3825 began questioningG1905 Him aboutG4012 thisG3778. 11And He saidG3004 to them, “14WhoeverG3739G302 15divorcesG630 his wifeG1135 and marriesG1060 anotherG243 womanG243 commitsG3429 adulteryG3429 againstG1909 her; 12and 16ifG1437 she herselfG846 17divorcesG630 her husbandG435 and marriesG1060 anotherG243 manG243, she is committingG3431 adulteryG3429.”
Jesus Blesses Little Children
1318And they were bringingG4374 childrenG3813 to Him soG2443 thatG2443 He would touchG681 them; but the disciplesG3101 rebukedG2008 them. 14But when JesusG2424 sawG3708 this, He was indignantG23 and saidG3004 to them, “AllowG863 the childrenG3813 to comeG2064 to Me; do not 19forbidG2967 them, 20for the kingdomG932 of GodG2316 belongsG1510 to suchG5108 asG5108 theseG5108. 15TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you, 21whoeverG3739G302 does not receiveG1209 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316 likeG5613 a childG3813 will not enterG1525 it atG3361 allG3361.” 16And He 22tookG1723 them inG1723 His armsG1723 and began blessingG2721 them, layingG5087 His handsG5495 on them.
The Rich Young Ruler
1723As He was settingG1607 outG1607 on a journeyG3598, a manG1520 ranG4370 upG4370 to Him and 24kneltG1120 beforeG1120 Him, and askedG1905 Him, “GoodG18 TeacherG1320, whatG5101 shall I doG4160 soG2443 thatG2443 I may 25inheritG2816 eternalG166 lifeG2222?” 18But JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “WhyG5101 do you callG3004 Me goodG18? NoG3762 oneG3762 is goodG18 exceptG1508 GodG2316 aloneG1520. 19You knowG3609 the commandmentsG1785: ‘26Do not murderG5407, Do not commitG3431 adulteryG3431, Do not stealG2813, Do not giveG5576 falseG5576 testimonyG5576, Do not defraudG650, HonorG5091 your fatherG3962 and motherG3384.’” 20And he saidG5346 to Him, “TeacherG1320, I have keptG5442 27allG3956 theseG3778 thingsG3778 from my youthG3503.” 21LookingG1689 atG1689 him, JesusG2424 showedG25 loveG25 to him and saidG3004 to him, “OneG1520 thingG1520 you lackG5302: goG5217 and sellG4453 allG3745 you possessG2192 and giveG1325 to the poorG4434, and you will haveG2192 28treasureG2344 in heavenG3772; and comeG1204, followG190 Me.” 22But he 29was deeplyG4768 dismayedG4768 by 30theseG3588 wordsG3056, and he wentG565 awayG565 grievingG3076; for he was one who ownedG2192 muchG4183 propertyG2933.
23And JesusG2424, lookingG4017 aroundG4017, saidG3004 to His disciplesG3101, “31HowG4459 hardG1423 it will be for thoseG3588 who are wealthyG5536 to enterG1525 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316!” 24And the disciplesG3101 32were amazedG2284 at His wordsG3056. But JesusG2424 respondedG611 againG3825 and saidG3004 to them, “ChildrenG5043, howG4459 hardG1422 it is to enterG1525 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316! 2533It is easierG2123 for a camelG2574 to goG1330 throughG1223 the eyeG5168 of a needleG4476 thanG2228 for a richG4145 personG4145 to enterG1525 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316.” 26And they were evenG4057 moreG4057 astonishedG1605, and saidG3004 to Him, “34ThenG2532 whoG5101 canG1410 be savedG4982?” 27LookingG1689 atG1689 them, JesusG2424 saidG3004, “35With peopleG444 it is impossibleG102, but not with GodG2316; for allG3956 thingsG3956 are possibleG1415 with GodG2316.”
2836PeterG4074 beganG757 to sayG3004 to Him, “BeholdG2400, we have leftG863 everythingG3956 and have followedG190 You.” 29JesusG2424 saidG5346, “TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you, 37there is noG3762 oneG3762 whoG3739 has leftG863 houseG3614 orG2228 brothersG80 orG2228 sistersG79 orG2228 motherG3384 orG2228 fatherG3962 orG2228 childrenG5043 orG2228 farmsG68, for My sakeG1752 and for the gospel’sG2098 sakeG1752, 3038but that he will receiveG2983 a hundredG1542 timesG1542 asG1542 muchG1542 nowG3568 in 39the presentG3778 ageG2540, housesG3614 and brothersG80 and sistersG79 and mothersG3384 and childrenG5043 and farmsG68, along with persecutionsG1375; and in 40the ageG165 to comeG2064, eternalG166 lifeG2222. 31But 41manyG4183 who are firstG4413 will be lastG2078, and the lastG2078, firstG4413.”
Jesus’ Sufferings Foretold
3242NowG1161 they were on the roadG3598 goingG305 upG305 to JerusalemG2414, and JesusG2424 was walkingG4254 on aheadG4254 of them; and they 43were amazedG2284, and thoseG3588 who followedG190 wereG5399 fearfulG5399. And againG3825 He tookG3880 the twelveG1427 asideG3880 and beganG757 to tellG3004 them whatG3588 wasG3195 goingG3195 toG3195 happenG4819 to Him, 33saying, “BeholdG2400, we are goingG305 upG305 to JerusalemG2414, and 44the SonG5207 of ManG444 will be 45handedG3860 overG3860 to the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the scribesG1122; and they will condemnG2632 Him to deathG2288 and will 46handG3860 Him overG3860 to the GentilesG1484. 34And they will mockG1702 Him and 47spitG1716 onG1716 Him, and flogG3146 Him and killG615 Him; and threeG5140 daysG2250 laterG3326 He will riseG450 from the dead.”
354849JamesG2385 and JohnG2491, the twoG1417 sonsG5207 of ZebedeeG2199, cameG4365 upG4365 to 50Jesus, sayingG3004 to Him, “TeacherG1320, we wantG2309 You to doG4160 for us whateverG3739G1437 we askG154 of You.” 36And He saidG3004 to them, “WhatG5101 do you wantG2309 Me to doG4160 for you?” 37They saidG3004 to Him, “51GrantG1325 that we 52may sitG2523, oneG1520 on Your rightG1188 and oneG1520 on Your leftG710, in Your gloryG1391.” 38But JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “You do not knowG3609 whatG5101 you are askingG154. Are you ableG1410 53to drinkG4095 the cupG4221 that I drinkG4095, orG2228 54to be baptizedG907 with the baptismG908 with whichG3739 I am baptizedG907?” 39They saidG3004 to Him, “We are ableG1410.” And JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “The cupG4221 that I drinkG4095 55you shall drinkG4095; and you shall be baptizedG907 with the baptismG908 with whichG3739 I am baptizedG907. 40But to sitG2523 on My rightG1188 orG2228 on My leftG2176 is not MineG1699 to giveG1325; 56but it is for those for whomG3739 it has been preparedG2090.”
4157HearingG191 this, the other tenG1176 beganG757 to feelG23 indignantG23 with 58JamesG2385 and JohnG2491. 42CallingG4341 them to Himself, JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “You knowG3609 that thoseG3588 who are recognizedG1380 as rulersG757 of the GentilesG1484 domineerG2634 overG2634 them; and their 59peopleG3173 inG3173 highG3173 positionG3173 exerciseG2715 authorityG2715 overG2715 them. 43But it is not thisG3779 wayG3779 amongG1722 you; 60ratherG235, whoeverG3739G302 wantsG2309 to becomeG1096 61prominentG3173 amongG1722 you shall be your servantG1249; 44and whoeverG3739G302 wantsG2309 to be firstG4413 amongG1722 you shall be slaveG1401 of allG3956. 45For evenG2532 the SonG5207 of ManG444 62did not comeG2064 to be servedG1247, but to serveG1247, and to giveG1325 His 63lifeG5590 as a ransomG3083 for manyG4183.”
Bartimaeus Receives His Sight
4664ThenG2532 they cameG2064 to JerichoG2410. And later, 65as He was leavingG1607 JerichoG2410 with His disciplesG3101 and a largeG2425 crowdG3793, a beggarG4319 who was blindG5185 named BartimaeusG924, the sonG5207 of TimaeusG5090, was sittingG2521 by the roadG3598. 47And when he heardG191 that it was JesusG2424 the 66NazareneG3479, he beganG757 to cryG2896 outG2896 and sayG3004, “JesusG2424, 67SonG5207 of DavidG1160, haveG1653 mercyG1653 on me!” 48ManyG4183 were sternlyG2008 tellingG2008 him to be quietG4623, but he kept cryingG2896 outG2896 allG4183 the moreG3123, “68SonG5207 of DavidG1160, haveG1653 mercyG1653 on me!” 49And JesusG2424 stoppedG2476 and saidG3004, “CallG5455 him here.” SoG2532 they calledG5455 the manG5185 whoG5185 wasG5185 blindG5185, sayingG3004 to him, “69TakeG2293 courageG2293, standG1453 upG1453! He is callingG5455 for you.” 50And throwingG577 offG577 his cloakG2440, he jumpedG375 up and cameG2064 to JesusG2424. 51And replyingG611 to him, JesusG2424 saidG3004, “WhatG5101 do you wantG2309 Me to doG4160 for you?” And the manG5185 whoG5185 wasG5185 blindG5185 saidG3004 to Him, “7071RabboniG4462, I want to regainG308 my sightG308!” 52And JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “GoG5217; 72your faithG4102 has 73madeG4982 you wellG4982.” And immediatelyG2117 he regainedG308 his sightG308 and began followingG190 Him on the roadG3598.
