Luke 7
The Faith of the Centurion
(Matthew 8:5–13; John 4:43–54)
1WhenG1894 Jesus had concludedG4137G3956 HisG846 discourseG4487 inG1519 theG3588 hearingG189 of theG3588 peopleG2992, He wentG1525 toG1519 CapernaumG2584. 2There aG5100 highly valuedG3739G1510G846G1784 servantG1401 of a centurionG1543 wasG2192 sickG2560 and aboutG3195 to dieG5053. 3WhenG1161 the centurion heardG191 aboutG4012 JesusG2424, he sentG649 some JewishG2453 eldersG4245 to askG2065 HimG846 to comeG2064 and healG1295 hisG846 servantG1401. 4They cameG3854 toG4314 JesusG2424 and pleaded withG3870 HimG846 earnestlyG4709, “This man isG1510 worthyG514 to have You grantG3930 thisG3778, 5forG1063 he lovesG25 ourG1473 nationG1484 andG2532 has builtG3618 ourG1473 synagogueG4864.”
6SoG1161 JesusG2424 wentG4198 withG4862 themG846. ButG1161 whenG2235 HeG846 was not farG3756G3112G568 fromG575 theG3588 houseG3614, theG3588 centurionG1543 sentG3992 friendsG5384 with the messageG3004G846: “LordG2962, do notG3361 trouble YourselfG4660, forG1063 I amG1510 notG3756 worthyG2425 to haveG2443 You comeG1525 underG5259 myG1473 roofG4721. 7That is whyG1352 I did not consider myself worthyG3761G515G1683 to comeG2064 toG4314 YouG4771. ButG235 just sayG2036 the wordG3056, andG2532 myG1473 servantG3816 will be healedG2390. 8ForG1063 IG1473 myself amG1510 a manG444 underG5021G5259 authorityG1849, withG2192 soldiersG4757 underG5259 meG1683. I tellG3004 one to goG4198, andG2532 he goesG4198, andG2532 anotherG243 to comeG2064, andG2532 he comesG2064. I tell myG1473 servantG1401 to doG4160 something, andG2532 he doesG4160 it.”
9When Jesus heardG3588G191 this, He marveled atG2296 the centurion. TurningG4762 to theG3588 crowdG3793 followingG190 HimG846, He saidG2036, “I tellG3004 youG4771, not evenG3761 inG1722 IsraelG2474 have I foundG2147 such greatG5118 faithG4102.” 10AndG2532 when theG3588 messengersG3992 returnedG5290 toG1519 theG3588 houseG3624, they foundG2147 theG3588 servantG1401 in good healthG5198.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son
Soon afterwardG1096G1722G3588G1836, Jesus wentG4198 toG1519 a townG4172 calledG2564 NainG3484. HisG846 disciplesG3101 went withG4848 HimG846, accompanied byG2532 a largeG4183 crowdG3793. 12AsG5613 He approachedG1448 theG3588 townG4172 gateG4439, He sawG2400 a dead manG2348 being carried outG1580, the onlyG3439 sonG5207 ofG3588 hisG846 motherG3384, andG2532 sheG846 wasG1510 a widowG5503. AndG2532 a largeG2425 crowdG3793 from theG3588 townG4172 wasG1510 withG4862 herG846.
13WhenG2532 theG3588 LordG2962 sawG3708 herG846, He had compassionG4697 onG1909 herG846 andG2532 saidG2036, “Do notG3361 weepG2799.” 14ThenG2532 He went upG4334 and touchedG680 theG3588 coffinG4673,1 andG1161 thoseG3588 carrying itG941 stood stillG2476. “Young manG3495,” He saidG2036, “I tellG3004 youG4771, get upG1453!” 15AndG2532 theG3588 deadG3498 man sat upG339 andG2532 beganG756 to speakG2980! ThenG2532 Jesus gaveG1325 him backG846 toG3588 hisG846 motherG3384.
A sense of aweG5401 swept overG2983 allG3956 of them, andG2532 they glorifiedG1392 GodG2316. “A greatG3173 prophetG4396 has appearedG1453 amongG1722 usG1473!” they saidG3004. “GodG2316 has visitedG1980 HisG846 peopleG2992!” 17AndG2532 the newsG3056 aboutG4012 Jesus spreadG1831 throughoutG1722G3650 JudeaG2449 andG2532 allG3956 theG3588 surrounding regionG4066.
John’s Inquiry
(Matthew 11:1–6)
18ThenG2532 John’s disciplesG3101 informedG518 him aboutG4012 allG3956 these thingsG3778. 19SoG2532 JohnG2491 calledG4341 twoG5100G1417 ofG3588 hisG846 disciplesG3101 and sentG3992 them toG4314 askG3004 theG3588 LordG2962, “AreG1510 YouG4771 theG3588 One who was to comeG2064, orG2228 should we look forG4328 someone elseG243?”
20When theG3588 menG435 cameG3854 toG4314 Jesus, they saidG2036, “JohnG2491 theG3588 BaptistG910 sentG649 usG1473 toG4314 askG3004, ‘AreG1510 YouG4771 theG3588 One who was to comeG2064, orG2228 should we look forG4328 someone elseG243?’”
21AtG1722 that veryG1565 hourG5610 Jesus healedG2323 manyG4183 people ofG575 their diseasesG3554, afflictionsG3148, andG2532 evilG4190 spiritsG4151, andG2532 He gaveG5483 sightG991 to manyG4183 who were blindG5185. 22SoG2532 He repliedG611G2036G846, “GoG4198 back and reportG518 to JohnG2491 whatG3739 you have seenG3708 andG2532 heardG191: The blindG5185 receive sightG308, the lameG5560 walkG4043, the lepersG30152 are cleansedG2511, the deafG2974 hearG191, the deadG3498 are raisedG1453, and the good news is preachedG2097 to the poorG4434. 23BlessedG3107 isG1510 theG3739 one who does not fall awayG4624G1437G3361 on account ofG1722 MeG1473.3”
Jesus Testifies about John
(Malachi 3:1–5; Matthew 11:7–19)
24AfterG1161 John’sG2491 messengersG32 had leftG565, Jesus beganG756 to speakG3004 toG4314 theG3588 crowdsG3793 aboutG4012 JohnG2491: “WhatG5101 did you go outG1831 intoG1519 theG3588 wildernessG2048 to seeG2300? A reedG2563 swayingG4531 inG5259 the windG417? 25OtherwiseG235, whatG5101 did you go outG1831 to seeG3708? A manG444 dressedG294 inG1722 fineG3120 clothesG2440? LookG2400, those whoG3588 wear elegantG1741 clothingG2441 andG2532 liveG5225 in luxuryG5172 are foundG1510 inG1722 palacesG934.
26WhatG5101 thenG235 did you go outG1831 to seeG3708? A prophetG4396? YesG3483, I tellG3004 youG4771, andG2532 moreG4053 than a prophetG4396. 27ThisG3778 is the oneG1510 aboutG4012 whomG3739 it is writtenG1125:
28I tellG3004 youG4771, amongG1722 those bornG1084 of womenG1135 there isG1510 no oneG3762 greaterG3173 than JohnG2491, yet evenG1161 theG3588 leastG3398 inG1722 theG3588 kingdomG932 ofG3588 GodG2316 isG1510 greaterG3173 than heG846.”
AllG3956 theG3588 peopleG2992 who heardG191 this, evenG2532 theG3588 tax collectorsG5057, acknowledged God’s justiceG1344G3588G2316. For they had received the baptismG907G3588G908 of JohnG2491. 30ButG1161 theG3588 PhariseesG5330 andG2532 experts in the lawG3544 rejectedG114 God’sG2316 purposeG1012 forG1519 themselvesG1438, because they had notG3361 been baptizedG907 byG5259 John.
31“To whatG5101, thenG3767, can I compareG3666 theG3588 menG444 of thisG3778 generationG1074? WhatG5101 are theyG1510 likeG3664? 32They areG1510 likeG3664 childrenG3813 sittingG2521 inG1722 the marketplaceG58 andG2532 calling outG4377 to one anotherG240G3739G3004:
33ForG1063 JohnG2491 theG3588 BaptistG910 cameG2064 neitherG3361 eatingG2068 breadG740 norG3383 drinkingG4095 wineG3631, andG2532 you sayG3004, ‘He hasG2192 a demonG1140!’ 34TheG3588 SonG5207 of ManG444 cameG2064 eatingG2068 andG2532 drinkingG4095, andG2532 you sayG3004, ‘LookG2400 at this gluttonG5314 andG2532 drunkardG3630, a friendG5384 of tax collectorsG5057 andG2532 sinnersG268!’ 35ButG2532 wisdomG4678 is vindicatedG1344 byG575 allG3956 herG846 childrenG5043.”
A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus
(Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; John 12:1–8)
36ThenG1161 oneG5100 of theG3588 PhariseesG5330 invitedG2065 Jesus toG2443 eatG5315 withG3326 himG846, andG2532 He enteredG1525G1519 theG3588 Pharisee’sG5330 houseG3624 and reclined at the tableG2625. 37WhenG2532G2400 a sinfulG3748G1510G268 womanG1135 fromG1722 that townG4172 learnedG1921 thatG3754 Jesus was diningG2621 there, she broughtG2865 an alabaster jarG211 of perfumeG3464. 38As she stoodG2476 behind HimG3694 atG3844 HisG846 feetG4228 weepingG2799, she beganG756 to wetG1026 HisG846 feetG4228 withG3588 her tearsG1144 andG2532 wipeG1591 them withG3588 her hairG2359G3588G846G2776. ThenG2532 she kissedG2705 HisG846 feetG4228 andG2532 anointedG218 them with theG3588 perfumeG3464.
39WhenG1161 theG3588 PhariseeG5330 whoG3588 had invitedG2564 Jesus sawG3708 this, he saidG2036 toG1722 himselfG1438, “IfG1487 thisG3778 man wereG1510 a prophetG4396, He would knowG1097 whoG5101 this is andG2532 what kindG4217 ofG3588 womanG1135 is touchingG680 HimG846—forG3754 she isG1510 a sinnerG268!”
40ButG2532 JesusG2424 answeredG611G2036G4314 himG846, “SimonG4613, I haveG2192 somethingG5100 to tellG2036 youG4771.”
“TellG2036 me, TeacherG1320,” he saidG5346.
41“TwoG1417 men wereG1510 debtorsG5533 to a certain moneylenderG5100G1157. OneG1520 owedG3784 him five hundredG4001 denariiG1220,5 andG1161 theG3588 otherG2087 fiftyG4004. 42When theyG846 were unableG2192G3361 to repayG591 him, he forgaveG5483 bothG297 of them. WhichG5101 one, thenG3767, will loveG25 himG846 moreG4119?”
43“I supposeG5274 theG3739 one who was forgivenG5483 moreG4119,” SimonG4613 repliedG611G2036.
“You have judgedG2919 correctlyG3723,” Jesus saidG2036.
44AndG2532 turningG4762 towardG4314 theG3588 womanG1135, He saidG5346 to SimonG4613, “Do you seeG991 thisG3778 womanG1135? When I enteredG1525G1519 yourG4771 houseG3614, you did not giveG1325G3756 Me waterG5204 forG1909 MyG1473 feetG4228, butG1161 she wetG1026 MyG1473 feetG4228 with herG3778 tearsG1144 andG2532 wipedG1591 them withG3588 herG846 hairG2359. 45You did not greetG3756G1325 MeG1473 with a kissG5370, butG1161 sheG3778 has not stoppedG3756G1257 kissingG2705 MyG1473 feetG4228 sinceG575G3739 I arrivedG1525. 46You did not anointG3756G218 MyG1473 headG2776 with oilG1637, butG1161 sheG3778 has anointedG218 MyG1473 feetG4228 with perfumeG3464. 47ThereforeG5484 I tellG3004 youG4771, herG846 manyG4183 sinsG266 have been forgivenG863, forG3754 she has lovedG25 muchG4183. ButG1161 he whoG3739 has been forgivenG863 littleG3641 lovesG25 littleG3641.”
48ThenG1161 Jesus saidG2036 to herG846, “YourG4771 sinsG266 are forgivenG863.”
49ButG2532 thoseG3588 at the tableG4873 beganG756 to sayG3004 toG1722 themselvesG1438, “WhoG5101 isG1510 thisG3778 whoG3739 evenG2532 forgivesG863 sinsG266?”
50AndG1161 Jesus toldG2036G4314 theG3588 womanG1135, “YourG4771 faithG4102 has savedG4982 youG4771; goG4198 inG1519 peaceG1515.”
