2And somePhariseesΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiG5330cameπροσελθόντεςproselthontesG4334upG4334to Jesus, testingπειράζοντεςpeirazontesG3985Him, and beganquestioningἐπηρώτωνepērōtōnG1905Him whetherεἰeiG1487it was lawfulἔξεστινexestinG1832for a manἀνδρὶandriG435todivorceἀπολῦσαιapolusaiG630hiswifeγυναῖκαgunaikaG1135.

3And He answeredἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisG611and saidG3004to them,“WhatτίtiG5101did MosesΜωϋσῆς;MōusēsG3475commandἐνετείλατοeneteilatoG1781you?”

4They saidG3004, “MosesΜωϋσῆςMōusēsG3475permittedἐπέτρεψενepetrepsenG2010a manto writeγράψαιgrapsaiG1125acertificateβιβλίονbiblionG975of divorceἀποστασίουapostasiouG647andsendἀπολῦσαι.apolusaiG630his wifeawayG630.”

5But JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidG3004to them, “BecauseπρὸςprosG4314of your hardnessσκληροκαρδίανsklērokardianG4641ofG4641heartG4641he wroteἔγραψενegrapsenG1125you thisταύτην·tautēnG3778commandmentἐντολὴνentolēnG1785.

6Butfrom the beginningἀρχῆςarchēsG746of creationκτίσεωςktiseōsG2937, GodcreatedἐποίησενepoiēsenG4160them maleG733and femaleθῆλυthēluG2338.

7For thisτούτουtoutouG3778reasonἕνεκενhenekenG1752a manἄνθρωποςanthrōposG444shall leaveκαταλείψειkataleipseiG2641his fatherπατέραpateraG3962and motherμητέραmēteraG3384,

8and the twoδύοduoG1417shall becomeεἰςeisG1510 G1519oneμίανmianG1520fleshσάρκαsarkaG4561;soὥστεhōsteG5620they are noG3765longerG3765twoδύοduoG1417,but oneμίαmiaG1520fleshσάρξ.sarxG4561.

9ThereforeοὖνounG3767,whatὃhoG3739GodθεὸςtheosG2316has joinedG4801togetherσυνέζευξεν,sunezeuxenG4801,noμὴmēG3361personἄνθρωποςanthrōposG444is to separateχωριζέτω.¶chōrizetōG5563.”

10And in the houseοἰκίανoikianG3614the disciplesμαθηταὶmathētaiG3101againπάλινpalinG3825beganquestioningἐπηρώτωνepērōtōnG1905Him aboutπερὶperiG4012thisτούτουtoutouG3778.

11And He saidλέγειlegeiG3004to them, “Whoeverὃς ἂνhos anG3739 G302divorcesἀπολύσῃapolusēG630his wifeγυναῖκαgunaikaG1135and marriesγαμήσῃgamēsēG1060anotherG243womanG243commitsG3429adulteryμοιχᾶταιmoichataiG3429againstἐπ᾽ep᾽G1909her;

12andifἐὰνeanG1437she herselfG846divorcesἀπολύσασαapolusasaG630her husbandἄνδραandraG435and marriesγαμήσῃgamēsēG1060anotherG243manG243,she is committingG3431adulteryμοιχᾶται.¶moichataiG3429.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13And they were bringingπροσέφερονprosepheronG4374childrenπαιδίαpaidiaG3813to Him soG2443thatG2443He would touchἅψηται·hapsētaiG681them; but the disciplesμαθηταὶmathētaiG3101rebukedἐπετίμησανepetimēsanG2008them.

14But when JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424sawG3708this,He was indignantἠγανάκτησενēganaktēsenG23and saidG3004to them,“AllowἄφετεapheteG863the childrenπαιδίαpaidiaG3813to comeἔρχεσθαιerchesthaiG2064to Me; do notforbidκωλύετεkōlueteG2967them,for the kingdomβασιλείαbasileiaG932of Godθεοῦ.¶theouG2316belongsἐστὶνestinG1510to suchG5108asG5108theseG5108.

15TrulyἈμὴνAmēnG281I sayλέγωlegōG3004to you,whoeverὃς ἂνhos anG3739 G302does not receiveδέξηταιdexētaiG1209the kingdomβασιλείανbasileianG932of GodθεοῦtheouG2316likeὡςhōsG5613a childπαιδίον,paidionG3813will not enterεἰσέλθῃeiselthēG1525it atμὴmēG3361allμὴmēG3361.”

16And HetookG1723them inG1723His armsG1723and beganblessingG2721them, layingτιθεὶςtitheisG5087His handsχεῖραςcheirasG5495on them.

The Rich Young Ruler

17As He was settingG1607outG1607on a journeyὁδὸνhodonG3598,a manεἷςheisG1520ranπροσδραμὼνprosdramōnG4370upG4370to Him andkneltG1120beforeG1120Him, and askedἐπηρώταepērōtaG1905Him, “Goodἀγαθέ,agatheG18TeacherδιδάσκαλεdidaskaleG1320,whatτίtiG5101shall I doποιήσωpoiēsōG4160soG2443thatG2443I mayinheritκληρονομήσω;¶klēronomēsōG2816eternalαἰώνιονaiōnionG166lifeζωὴνzōēnG2222?”

18But JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidG3004to him,“WhyτίtiG5101do you callG3004Me goodἀγαθόν;agathonG18?NoG3762oneοὐδεὶςoudeisG3762is goodἀγαθὸςagathosG18exceptG1508Godθεός.theosG2316aloneεἷςheisG1520.

19You knowG3609the commandmentsἐντολὰςentolasG1785: ‘Do not murderφονεύσῃς,phoneusēsG5407,Do not commitμοιχεύσῃς,moicheusēsG3431adulteryG3431,Do not stealκλέψῃς,klepsēsG2813,Do not giveG5576falseψευδομαρτυρήσῃς,pseudomarturēsēsG5576testimonyG5576,Do not defraudἀποστερήσῃς,aposterēsēsG650,HonorτίμαtimaG5091your fatherπατέραpateraG3962and motherμητέρα.mēteraG3384.’”

20And he saidἔφηephēG5346to Him, “Teacherδιδάσκαλε,didaskaleG1320,I have keptἐφυλαξάμηνephulaxamēnG5442allπάνταpantaG3956theseG3778thingsG3778from my youthνεότητόςneotētosG3503.”

21LookingἐμβλέψαςemblepsasG1689atG1689him, JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424showedG25loveG25to him and saidG3004to him,“OneἕνhenG1520thingG1520you lackὑστερεῖ·hustereiG5302:goὕπαγε,hupageG5217and sellπώλησονpōlēsonG4453allὅσαhosaG3745you possessἔχειςecheisG2192and giveδὸςdosG1325to the poorπτωχοῖςptōchoisG4434,and you will haveἕξειςhexeisG2192treasureθησαυρὸνthēsauronG2344in heavenοὐρανῷ.ouranōG3772;and comeδεῦρο,deuroG1204,followἀκολούθειakoloutheiG190Me.”

22But hewas deeplyG4768dismayedG4768bytheseG3588wordsλόγῳlogōG3056,and he wentG565awayἀπῆλθενapēlthenG565grievingλυπούμενος·lupoumenosG3076;for he was one who ownedἔχωνechōnG2192muchπολλά.pollaG4183propertyκτήματαktēmataG2933.

23And JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424,lookingπεριβλεψάμενοςperiblepsamenosG4017aroundG4017,saidλέγειlegeiG3004to His disciplesμαθηταῖςmathētaisG3101, “HowπῶςpōsG4459hardδυσκόλωςduskolōsG1423it will be for thoseG3588who are wealthyχρήματαchrēmataG5536to enterεἰσελεύσονται.eiseleusontaiG1525the kingdomβασιλείανbasileianG932of GodθεοῦtheouG2316!”

24And the disciplesμαθηταὶmathētaiG3101were amazedἐθαμβοῦντοethambountoG2284at His wordsλόγοιςlogoisG3056.But JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424respondedἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisG611againπάλινpalinG3825and saidλέγειlegeiG3004to them,“Childrenτέκνα,teknaG5043,howπῶςpōsG4459hardδύσκολόνduskolonG1422it is to enterεἰσελθεῖν.eiseltheinG1525the kingdomβασιλείανbasileianG932of GodθεοῦtheouG2316!

25It is easierεὐκοπώτερόνeukopōteronG2123for a camelκάμηλονkamēlonG2574to goG1330throughδιὰdiaG1223the eyeτρυμαλιᾶςtrumaliasG5168of a needleῥαφίδοςrhaphidosG4476thanἢēG2228for a richπλούσιονplousionG4145personG4145to enterεἰσελθεῖν.eiseltheinG1525the kingdomβασιλείανbasileianG932of GodθεοῦtheouG2316.”

26And they were evenG4057moreG4057astonishedἐξεπλήσσοντοexeplēssontoG1605,and saidλέγοντεςlegontesG3004to Him, “ThenκαὶkaiG2532whoτίςtisG5101canδύναταιdunataiG1410be savedσωθῆναι;sōthēnaiG4982?”

27LookingἐμβλέψαςemblepsasG1689atG1689them, JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidλέγει·legeiG3004, “With peopleἀνθρώποιςanthrōpoisG444it is impossibleἀδύνατονadunatonG102,but not with Godθεῷ·theōG2316;for allG3956thingsπάνταpantaG3956are possibleδυνατὰdunataG1415with Godθεῷ.¶theōG2316.”

28PeterΠέτροςPetrosG4074beganἤρξατοērxatoG757to sayλέγεινlegeinG3004to Him, “BeholdἰδοὺidouG2400,we have leftἀφήκαμενaphēkamenG863everythingπάνταpantaG3956and have followedG190You.”

29JesusἸησοῦς·IēsousG2424saidἔφηephēG5346,“TrulyἀμὴνamēnG281I sayλέγωlegōG3004to you,there is noG3762oneοὐδείςoudeisG3762whoὃςhosG3739has leftἀφῆκενaphēkenG863houseοἰκίανoikianG3614orἢēG2228brothersἀδελφοὺςadelphousG80orἢēG2228sistersἀδελφὰςadelphasG79orἢēG2228motherμητέραmēteraG3384orἢēG2228fatherπατέραpateraG3962orἢēG2228childrenτέκναteknaG5043orἢēG2228farmsἀγροὺςagrousG68,for My sakeἕνεκενhenekenG1752and for the gospel’sεὐαγγελίου,euangeliouG2098sakeἕνεκενhenekenG1752,

30but that he will receiveλάβῃlabēG2983a hundredG1542timesG1542asG1542muchG1542nowνῦνnunG3568inthe presentτούτῳtoutōG3778ageκαιρῷkairōG2540,housesοἰκίαςoikiasG3614and brothersἀδελφοὺςadelphousG80and sistersἀδελφὰςadelphasG79and mothersμητέραςmēterasG3384and childrenτέκναteknaG5043and farmsἀγροὺςagrousG68,along with persecutionsδιωγμῶνdiōgmōnG1375; and inthe ageαἰῶνιaiōniG165to comeἐρχομένῳerchomenōG2064,eternalαἰώνιον.aiōnionG166lifeζωὴνzōēnG2222.

31ButmanyπολλοὶpolloiG4183who arefirstπρῶτοιprōtoiG4413will be lastἔσχατοιeschatoiG2078,and the lastἔσχατοιeschatoiG2078,firstπρῶτοι.¶prōtoiG4413.”

Jesus’ Sufferings Foretold

32NowG1161they were on the roadὁδῷhodōG3598goingG305upG305to JerusalemἹεροσόλυμα,Hi'erosolumaG2414,and JesusἸησοῦς,IēsousG2424was walkingG4254on aheadG4254of them; and theywere amazedἐθαμβοῦντο·ethambountoG2284,and thoseG3588who followedἀκολουθοῦντεςakolouthountesG190wereG5399fearfulG5399.And againπάλινpalinG3825He tookG3880the twelveδώδεκαdōdekaG1427asideG3880and beganἤρξατοērxatoG757to tellλέγεινlegeinG3004them whatG3588wasG3195goingG3195toG3195happenσυμβαίνεινsumbaineinG4819to Him,

33saying,“BeholdἰδοὺidouG2400,we are goingἀναβαίνομενanabainomenG305upG305to JerusalemἹεροσόλυμα,Hi'erosolumaG2414, andthe SonυἱὸςhuiosG5207of ManἀνθρώπουanthrōpouG444will behandedG3860overG3860to the chiefἀρχιερεῦσινarchiereusinG749priestsG749and the scribesγραμματεῦσιν,grammateusinG1122;and they will condemnκατακρινοῦσινkatakrinousinG2632Him to deathθανάτῳthanatōG2288and willhandG3860Him overG3860to the GentilesἔθνεσινethnesinG1484.

34And they will mockἐμπαίξουσινempaixousinG1702Him andspitἐμπτύσουσινemptusousinG1716onG1716Him, and flogμαστιγώσουσινmastigōsousinG3146Him and killἀποκτενοῦσινapoktenousinG615Him;and threeτρεῖςtreisG5140daysἡμέραςhēmerasG2250laterμετὰmetaG3326He will riseἀναστήσεται.¶anastēsetaiG450from the dead.”

35JamesἸάκωβοςIakōbosG2385and JohnἸωάννης,IōannēsG2491,the twoG1417sonsυἱοὶhuioiG5207of ZebedeeΖεβεδαίου,ZebedaiouG2199,cameG4365upG4365toJesus, sayingλέγοντεςlegontesG3004to Him, “Teacherδιδάσκαλε,didaskaleG1320,we wantθέλομενthelomenG2309You to doποιήσῃςpoiēsēsG4160for us whateverὃ ἐὰνho eanG3739 G1437we askαἰτήσωμένaitēsōmenG154of You.”

36And He saidG3004to them,“WhatτίtiG5101do you wantθέλετέtheleteG2309Me to doποιήσωpoiēsōG4160for you?”

37They saidG3004to Him, “GrantδὸςdosG1325that wemay sitκαθίσωμενkathisōmenG2523,oneεἷςheisG1520on Your rightδεξιῶνdexiōnG1188and oneεἷςheisG1520on YourleftἀριστερῶνaristerōnG710,in Your gloryδόξῃdoxēG1391.”

38But JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidG3004to them,“You do not knowG3609whatτίtiG5101you are askingαἰτεῖσθε.aiteistheG154.Are you ableδύνασθεdunastheG1410to drinkπιεῖνpieinG4095the cupποτήριονpotērionG4221that I drinkπίνωpinōG4095,orἢēG2228to be baptizedβαπτίζομαιbaptizomaiG907with the baptismβάπτισμαbaptismaG908with whichG3739I am baptizedβαπτισθῆναι;baptisthēnaiG907?”

39They saidG3004to Him, “We are ableδυνάμεθα.dunamethaG1410.”And JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidG3004to them,“The cupποτήριονpotērionG4221that I drinkπίνωpinōG4095you shall drinkπίεσθε,piestheG4095;and you shall be baptizedβαπτίζομαιbaptizomaiG907with the baptismβάπτισμαbaptismaG908with whichG3739I am baptizedβαπτισθήσεσθε·baptisthēsestheG907.

40But to sitκαθίσαιkathisaiG2523on My rightδεξιῶνdexiōnG1188orἢēG2228on MyleftεὐωνύμωνeuōnumōnG2176is not MineG1699to giveδοῦναιdounaiG1325; but it isfor those for whomοἷςhoisG3739it has been preparedἡτοίμασται.¶hētoimastaiG2090.”

41HearingἀκούσαντεςakousantesG191this, the othertenδέκαdekaG1176beganἤρξαντοērxantoG757to feelG23indignantἀγανακτεῖνaganakteinG23withJamesἸακώβουIakōbouG2385and JohnἸωάννου.¶IōannouG2491.

42CallingπροσκαλεσάμενοςproskalesamenosG4341them to Himself, JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidλέγειlegeiG3004to them,“You knowG3609that thoseG3588who are recognizedδοκοῦντεςdokountesG1380as rulersἄρχεινarcheinG757of the GentilesἐθνῶνethnōnG1484domineerG2634overG2634them; and theirpeopleG3173inG3173highG3173positionG3173exerciseκατεξουσιάζουσινkatexousiazousinG2715authorityG2715overG2715them.

43But it is not thisG3779wayG3779amongἐνenG1722you;ratherἀλλ᾽all᾽G235,whoeverὃς ἂνhos anG3739 G302wantsθέλῃthelēG2309to becomeγενέσθαιgenesthaiG1096prominentμέγαςmegasG3173amongἐνenG1722you shall be your servantδιάκονος·diakonosG1249;

44and whoeverὃς ἂνhos anG3739 G302wantsθέλῃthelēG2309to be firstπρῶτος,prōtosG4413amongἐνenG1722you shall be slaveδοῦλος.doulosG1401of allπάντωνpantōnG3956.

45For evenG2532the SonυἱὸςhuiosG5207of ManἀνθρώπουanthrōpouG444did not comeἦλθενēlthenG2064to be servedδιακονηθῆναιdiakonēthēnaiG1247,but to serveδιακονῆσαιdiakonēsaiG1247,and to giveδοῦναιdounaiG1325HislifeψυχὴνpsuchēnG5590as a ransomλύτρονlutronG3083for manyπολλῶν.¶pollōnG4183.”

Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

46ThenG2532they cameἔρχονταιerchontaiG2064to JerichoἸεριχώ.IerichōG2410. And later,as He was leavingἐκπορευομένουekporeuomenouG1607JerichoἸεριχὼIerichōG2410with His disciplesμαθητῶνmathētōnG3101and a largeἱκανοῦhikanouG2425crowdὄχλουochlouG3793,a beggarG4319who was blindτυφλὸςtuphlosG5185namedBartimaeusΒαρτιμαῖος,BartimaiosG924,the sonυἱὸςhuiosG5207of TimaeusΤιμαίουTimaiouG5090,was sittingἐκάθητοekathētoG2521by the roadὁδόν.hodonG3598.

47And when he heardἀκούσαςakousasG191that it was JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424theNazareneΝαζαρηνόςNazarēnosG3479,he beganἤρξατοērxatoG757to cryκράζεινkrazeinG2896outG2896and sayλέγειν·legeinG3004, “JesusἸησοῦ,IēsouG2424,SonυἱὲhuieG5207of DavidG1160,haveG1653mercyἐλέησόνeleēsonG1653on me!”

48ManyπολλοὶpolloiG4183were sternlyG2008tellingG2008him to be quietσιωπήσῃ.siōpēsēG4623,but he kept cryingἔκραζεν·ekrazenG2896outG2896allπολλῷpollōG4183the moreμᾶλλονmallonG3123, “SonυἱὲhuieG5207of DavidG1160,haveG1653mercyἐλέησόνeleēsonG1653on me!”

49And JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424stoppedστὰςstasG2476and saidλέγοντεςlegontesG3004,“CallφωνήσατεphōnēsateG5455him here.”SoG2532they calledφωνοῦσινphōnousinG5455the manτυφλὸνtuphlonG5185whoG5185wasG5185blindG5185,sayingG3004to him, “Takeθάρσει,tharseiG2293courageG2293,standG1453upG1453!He is callingφωνεῖphōneiG5455for you.”

50And throwingG577offG577his cloakἱμάτιονhimationG2440,he jumpedG375up and cameἦλθενēlthenG2064to JesusἸησοῦν.IēsounG2424.

51And replyingἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisG611to him, JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidG3004,“WhatτίtiG5101do you wantθέλειςtheleisG2309Me to doποιήσω;poiēsōG4160for you?”And the manτυφλὸςtuphlosG5185whoG5185wasG5185blindG5185saidG3004to Him, “Rabboniραββουνι,rabbouniG4462, I wantto regainG308my sightἀναβλέψω.anablepsōG308!”

52And JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidG3004to him,“Goὕπαγε,hupageG5217;your faithπίστιςpistisG4102hasmadeG4982you wellG4982.”And immediatelyG2117he regainedG308his sightἀνέβλεψενaneblepsenG308and beganfollowingἠκολούθειēkoloutheiG190Him on the roadὁδῷ.¶hodōG3598.
