1Now it cameH1961aboutH1961afterאַחֲרֵי֙'a.cha.ReiH310the deathמ֣וֹתMotH4194of Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091that the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478inquiredוַֽיִּשְׁאֲלוּ֙vai.yish.'a.LuH7592of the Lordבַּיהוָ֖הba.Yah.wehH3068,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Whoמִ֣יmiH4310shall goיַעֲלֶה־ya.'a.leh-H5927upH5927firstבַּתְּחִלָּ֖הba.te.chi.LahH8462for usagainstאֶל־'el-H413the Canaanitesהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛יha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669,to fightלְהִלָּ֥חֶםle.hi.La.chemH3898against them?”
3Then Judahיְהוּדָה֩ye.hu.DahH3063saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his brotherאָחִ֜יו'a.ChivH251Simeonלְשִׁמְע֨וֹןle.shim.'onH8095, “GoH5927upH5927with me intothe territoryH1486allottedH1486me, and let’s fightוְנִֽלָּחֲמָה֙ve.ni.la.cha.MahH3898the Canaanitesבַּֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔יba.ke.na.'a.NiH3669; andI inH1571turnH1571will goוְהָלַכְתִּ֧יve.ha.lakh.TiH1980with you intothe territoryH1486allottedH1486you.” So Simeonשִׁמְעֽוֹן׃shim.'onH8095wentוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980with him.
4Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063wentH5927upH5927, andthe Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068handedבְּיָדָ֑םbe.ya.DamH5414H3027overH5414to them the Canaanitesהַכְּנַעֲנִ֥יha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669and the Perizzitesוְהַפְּרִזִּ֖יve.hap.pe.ri.ZiH6522, and theydefeatedוַיַּכּ֣וּםvai.ya.KumH5221tenעֲשֶׂ֥רֶת'a.Se.retH6235thousandאֲלָפִ֖ים'a.la.FimH505menאִֽישׁ׃'IshH376at Bezekבְּבֶ֔זֶקbe.Ve.zekH966.
7And Adoni-bezekH137saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Seventyשִׁבְעִ֣ים׀shiv.'ImH7657kingsמְלָכִ֡יםme.la.KhimH4428with their thumbsבְּֽהֹנוֹת֩be.ho.nOtH931and their bigH931toesוְרַגְלֵיהֶ֜םve.rag.lei.HemH931H7272cutמְקֻצָּצִ֗יםme.ku.tza.TzimH7112offH7112used to gatherמְלַקְּטִים֙me.la.ke.TimH3950upH3950scrapsunderתַּ֣חַתTa.chatH8478my tableשֻׁלְחָנִ֔יshul.cha.NiH7979;as I have doneעָשִׂ֔יתִי'a.Si.tiH6213,soכֵּ֥ןkenH3651Godאֱלֹהִ֑ים'E.lo.HimH430has repaidשִׁלַּם־shi.lam-H7999me.” So they broughtוַיְבִיאֻ֥הוּvay.vi.'U.huH935him to Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַ֖םye.ru.sha.LimH3389,and he diedוַיָּ֥מָתvai.Ya.motH4191thereשָֽׁם׃ פShamH8033.
8Then the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Judahיְהוּדָה֙ye.hu.DahH3063foughtוַיִּלָּחֲמ֤וּvai.yi.la.cha.MuH3898againstJerusalemבִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔םbi.Ru.sha.LimH3389and capturedוַיִּלְכְּד֣וּvai.yil.ke.DuH3920it, and struckוַיַּכּ֖וּהָvai.ya.Ku.haH5221it with the edgeלְפִי־le.fi-H6310of the swordחָ֑רֶבCha.revH2719,and setשִׁלְּח֥וּshi.le.ChuH7971the cityהָעִ֖ירha.'IrH5892on fireבָאֵֽשׁ׃va.'EshH784.
9Afterwardוְאַחַ֗רve.'a.CharH310,the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063wentH3381downיָֽרְדוּ֙ya.re.DuH3381to fightלְהִלָּחֵ֖םle.hi.la.ChemH3898against the Canaanitesבַּֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑יba.ke.na.'a.NiH3669livingיוֹשֵׁ֣בyo.ShevH3427in the hillהָהָ֔רha.HarH2022countryH2022, and in theNegevוְהַנֶּ֖גֶבve.ha.Ne.gevH5045,and in the lowlandוְהַשְּׁפֵלָֽה׃ve.ha.she.fe.LahH8219.
10So Judahיְהוּדָ֗הye.hu.DahH3063wentוַיֵּ֣לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980againstאֶל־'el-H413the Canaanitesהַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669who livedהַיּוֹשֵׁ֣בhai.yo.ShevH3427in Hebronבְּחֶבְר֔וֹןbe.chev.RonH2275(the nameוְשֵׁם־ve.shem-H8034of Hebronחֶבְר֥וֹןchev.RonH2275waspreviouslyלְפָנִ֖יםle.fa.NimH6440Kiriath-arbaH7153);and they struckוַיַּכּ֛וּvai.ya.KuH5221Sheshaiשֵׁשַׁ֥יshe.ShaiH8344,Ahimanאֲחִימַ֖ן'a.chi.ManH289,and Talmaiתַּלְמָֽי׃tal.MaiH8526.

12And Calebכָּלֵ֔בka.LevH3612saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whoeverאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834attacksיַכֶּ֥הya.KehH5221Kiriath-sepherH7158and capturesוּלְכָדָ֑הּu.le.kha.DahH3920it, I will giveוְנָתַ֥תִּיve.na.Ta.tiH5414him my daughterבִתִּ֖יvi.TiH1323Achsahעַכְסָ֥ה'akh.SahH5915as a wifeלְאִשָּֽׁה׃le.'i.ShahH802.”
13NowOthnielעָתְנִיאֵ֣ל'a.te.ni.'ElH6274the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Kenazקְנַ֔זke.NazH7073,Caleb’sכָלֵ֖בkha.LevH3612youngerהַקָּטֹ֣ן מִמֶּ֑נּוּha.ka.Ton mi.Me.nuH6996H4480brotherאֲחִ֥י'a.ChiH251,capturedוַֽיִּלְכְּדָהּ֙vai.yil.ke.DahH3920it; so he gaveוַיִּתֶּן־vai.yi.ten-H5414him his daughterבִתּ֖וֹvi.ToH1323Achsahעַכְסָ֥ה'akh.SahH5915as a wifeלְאִשָּֽׁה׃le.'i.ShahH802.
14Thenit happenedוַיְהִ֣יvay.HiH1961that when she cameבְּבוֹאָ֗הּbe.vo.'AhH935to him,she incitedוַתְּסִיתֵ֙הוּ֙va.te.si.Te.huH5496him to askלִשְׁא֤וֹלlish.'olH7592her fatherאָבִ֙יהָ֙'a.Vi.haH1for a fieldהַשָּׂדֶ֔הha.sa.DehH7704. Then later,she dismountedוַתִּצְנַ֖חva.titz.NachH6795fromher donkeyהַחֲמ֑וֹרha.cha.MorH2543,and Calebכָּלֵ֖בka.LevH3612saidוַיֹּֽאמֶר־vai.yo.mer-H559to her, “Whatמַה־mah-H4100do you want?”
15She saidוַתֹּ֨אמֶרva.To.merH559to him, “Giveהָֽבָה־ha.vah-H3051me a blessingבְרָכָ֗הve.ra.KhahH1293:sinceכִּ֣יkiH3588you have givenנְתַתָּ֔נִיne.ta.Ta.niH5414me the landאֶ֤רֶץ'E.retzH776of theNegevהַנֶּ֙גֶב֙ha.Ne.gevH5045,giveוְנָתַתָּ֥הve.na.ta.TahH5414me springsגֻּלֹּ֣תgu.LotH1543of waterמָ֑יִםMa.yimH4325also.” So Calebכָּלֵ֗בka.LevH3612gaveוַיִּתֶּן־vai.yi.ten-H5414her the upperעִלִּ֔ית'i.LitH5942springsגֻּלֹּ֣תgu.LotH1543and the lowerתַּחְתִּֽית׃ פtach.TitH8482springsגֻּלֹּ֥תgu.LotH1543.
16Now thedescendantsוּבְנֵ֣יu.ve.NeiH1121ofthe Keniteקֵינִי֩kei.NiH7017,Moses’מֹשֶׁ֜הmo.ShehH4872father-in-lawH2860,wentH5927upH5927from thecityH5892of palmsH8558with the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063,to the wildernessמִדְבַּ֣רmid.BarH4057of Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063whichאֲשֶׁ֖ר'a.SherH834is in the southבְּנֶ֣גֶבbe.Ne.gevH5045ofAradעֲרָ֑ד'a.RadH6166;and they wentוַיֵּ֖לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980and livedוַיֵּ֥שֶׁבvai.Ye.shevH3427with the peopleהָעָֽם׃ha.'AmH5971.
17Then Judahיְהוּדָה֙ye.hu.DahH3063wentוַיֵּ֤לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980with his brotherאָחִ֔יו'a.ChivH251Simeonשִׁמְע֣וֹןshim.'onH8095,and they struckוַיַּכּ֕וּvai.ya.KuH5221the Canaanitesהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖יha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669livingיוֹשֵׁ֣בyo.ShevH3427in Zephathצְפַ֑תtze.FatH6857,and utterlyH2763destroyedוַיַּחֲרִ֣ימוּvai.ya.cha.Ri.muH2763it. So the nameשֵׁם־shem-H8034of the cityהָעִ֖ירha.'IrH5892was calledוַיִּקְרָ֥אvai.yik.Ra'H7121Hormahחָרְמָֽה׃cha.re.MahH2767.
19Now the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068was with Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063,and they tookH3423possessionH3423of the hillהָהָ֑רha.HarH2022countryH2022; but they could notdriveH3423outH3423the inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵ֣יyo.she.VeiH3427of the valleyהָעֵ֔מֶקha.'E.mekH6010,becauseH3588they hadironבַּרְזֶ֖לbar.ZelH1270chariotsרֶ֥כֶבRe.khevH7393.
20Then they gaveוַיִּתְּנ֤וּvai.yi.te.NuH5414Hebronחֶבְר֔וֹןchev.RonH2275to Calebלְכָלֵב֙le.kha.LevH3612,as Mosesמֹשֶׁ֑הmo.ShehH4872hadpromisedדִּבֶּ֣רdi.BerH1696;and he droveH3423outH3423from thereמִשָּׁ֔םmi.ShamH8033the threeשְׁלֹשָׁ֖הshe.lo.ShahH7969sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Anakהָעֲנָֽק׃ha.'a.NakH6061.
21But the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Benjaminבִנְיָמִ֑ןvin.ya.MinH1144did not driveH3423outH3423theJebusitesהַיְבוּסִי֙hay.vu.SiH2983who livedיֹשֵׁ֣בyo.ShevH3427in Jerusalemיְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔םye.ru.sha.LimH3389;so the Jebusitesהַיְבוּסִ֜יhay.vu.SiH2983have livedוַיֵּ֨שֶׁבvai.Ye.shevH3427with the sonsבְּנֵ֤יbe.NeiH1121of Benjaminבִנְיָמִן֙vin.ya.MinH1144in Jerusalemבִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔םbi.Ru.sha.LimH3389to thisהַזֶּֽה׃ סha.ZehH2088dayהַיּ֥וֹםhai.YomH3117.
24And the spiesהַשֹּׁ֣מְרִ֔יםha.Sho.me.RimH8104sawוַיִּרְאוּ֙vai.yir.'UH7200a manאִ֖ישׁ'ishH376comingH3318outH3318of the cityהָעִ֑ירha.'IrH5892,and they saidוַיֹּ֣אמְרוּvai.Yo.me.ruH559to him, “Pleaseנָא֙na'H4994showהַרְאֵ֤נוּhar.'E.nuH7200us the entranceמְב֣וֹאme.Vo'H3996to the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892, andwe will treatוְעָשִׂ֥ינוּve.'a.Si.nuH6213you kindlyחָֽסֶד׃Cha.sedH2617.”
25So he showedוַיַּרְאֵם֙vai.yar.'EmH7200them the entranceמְב֣וֹאme.Vo'H3996to the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892,and they struckוַיַּכּ֥וּvai.ya.KuH5221the cityהָעִ֖ירha.'IrH5892with the edgeלְפִי־le.fi-H6310of the swordחָ֑רֶבCha.revH2719,but they letH7971the manהָאִ֥ישׁha.'IshH376and allכָּל־kol-H3605his familyמִשְׁפַּחְתּ֖וֹmish.pach.ToH4940goשִׁלֵּֽחוּ׃shi.Le.chuH7971freeH7971.
26Then the manהָאִ֔ישׁha.'IshH376wentוַיֵּ֣לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to the landאֶ֖רֶץ'E.retzH776of the Hittitesהַחִתִּ֑יםha.chi.TimH2850and builtוַיִּ֣בֶןvai.Yi.venH1129a cityעִ֗יר'IrH5892,and namedוַיִּקְרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙vai.yik.Ra' she.MahH7121H8034it Luzל֔וּזLuzH3870,whichה֣וּאhu'H1931is its nameשְׁמָ֔הּshe.MahH8034to thisהַזֶּֽה׃ פha.ZehH2088dayהַיּ֥וֹםhai.YomH3117.
