1Now thereH8033was a manאִ֨ישׁ'ishH376fromRamathaim-zophimH7436from thehillמֵהַ֣רme.HarH2022countryH2022of Ephraimאֶפְרָ֑יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669,and his nameוּשְׁמ֡וֹu.she.MoH8034wasElkanahאֶ֠לְקָנָה'El.ka.nahH511the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Jerohamיְרֹחָ֧םye.ro.ChamH3395,the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Elihuאֱלִיה֛וּא'e.li.Hu'H453,the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Tohuתֹּ֥חוּTo.chuH8459,the sonבֶן־ven-H1121of Zuphצ֖וּףtzufH6689,an Ephraimiteאֶפְרָתִֽי׃'ef.ra.TiH673.
2And he hadtwoשְׁתֵּ֣יshe.TeiH8147wivesנָשִׁ֔יםna.ShimH802:the nameשֵׁ֤םshemH8034of oneאַחַת֙'a.ChatH259wasHannahחַנָּ֔הcha.NahH2584and the nameוְשֵׁ֥םve.ShemH8034of theotherהַשֵּׁנִ֖יתha.she.NitH8145Peninnahפְּנִנָּ֑הpe.ni.NahH6444;and Peninnahלִפְנִנָּה֙lif.ni.NahH6444hadוַיְהִ֤יvay.HiH1961childrenיְלָדִ֔יםye.la.DimH3206,but Hannahוּלְחַנָּ֖הu.le.cha.NahH2584hadH369noH369childrenיְלָדִֽים׃ye.la.DimH3206.
3Now thisהַה֤וּאha.Hu'H1931manהָאִ֨ישׁha.'IshH376would goH5927upH5927from his cityמֵֽעִירוֹ֙me.'i.RoH5892yearlyH3117to worshipH2331and to sacrificeוְלִזְבֹּ֛חַve.liz.Bo.achH2076to the Lordלַיהוָ֥הla.Yah.wehH3068of armiesצְבָא֖וֹתtze.va.'otH6635inShilohבְּשִׁלֹ֑הbe.shi.LohH7887.And the twoשְׁנֵ֣יshe.NeiH8147sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Eliעֵלִ֗י'e.LiH5941,Hophniחָפְנִי֙cha.fe.NiH2652and Phinehasוּפִ֣נְחָ֔סu.Fin.ChasH6372,were priestsכֹּהֲנִ֖יםko.ha.NimH3548to the Lordלַיהוָֽה׃la.Yah.wehH3068thereוְשָׁ֞םve.ShamH8033.
4When the dayהַיּ֔וֹםhai.YomH3117cameוַיְהִ֣יvay.HiH1961that Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֑ה'el.ka.NahH511sacrificedוַיִּזְבַּ֖חvai.yiz.BachH2076, hewould giveוְנָתַ֞ןve.na.TanH5414portionsמָנֽוֹת׃ma.NotH4490to his wifeאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ'ish.ToH802Peninnahלִפְנִנָּ֣הlif.ni.NahH6444and to allוּֽלְכָל־u.le.khol-H3605her sonsבָּנֶ֛יהָba.Nei.haH1121and daughtersוּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָu.ve.no.Tei.haH1323;
6Her rivalצָֽרָתָהּ֙tza.ra.TahH6869, moreover,would provokeוְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּהve.khi.'a.Sa.tahH3707her bitterlyגַּם־ כַּ֔עַסgam- Ka.'asH1571H3708to irritateהַרְּעִמָ֑הּha.re.'i.MahH7481her, becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068had closedסָגַ֥ר בְּעַ֥דsa.Gar be.'AdH5462H1157her wombרַחְמָֽהּ׃rach.MahH7358.
7And it happenedיַעֲשֶׂ֜הya.'a.SehH6213yearשָׁנָ֣הsha.NahH8141after yearבְשָׁנָ֗הve.sha.NahH8141,as oftenמִדֵּ֤יmi.DeiH1767as she wentH5927upH5927to the houseבְּבֵ֣יתbe.VeitH1004of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,that she would provokeתַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּהtakh.'i.Se.nahH3707her; so she weptוַתִּבְכֶּ֖הva.tiv.KehH1058and would not eatתֹאכַֽל׃to.KhalH398.
8Then Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֣ה'el.ka.NahH511her husbandאִישָׁ֗הּ'i.ShahH376would sayוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to her, “Hannahחַנָּה֙cha.NahH2584,whyלָ֣מֶהLa.mehH4100do you weepתִבְכִּ֗יtiv.KiH1058,and whyוְלָ֙מֶה֙ve.La.mehH4100do you not eatתֹֽאכְלִ֔יtokh.LiH398,and whyוְלָ֖מֶהve.La.mehH4100isH7489your heartלְבָבֵ֑ךְle.va.VekhH3824sadH7489?Am I not betterט֣וֹבTovH2896to you thanH4480tenמֵעֲשָׂרָ֖הme.'a.sa.RahH6235sonsבָּנִֽים׃ba.NimH1121?”
9Then Hannahחַנָּ֔הcha.NahH2584gotH6965upH6965afterH310eatingאָכְלָ֥ה'a.khe.LahH398and drinkingשָׁתֹ֑הsha.TohH8354in Shilohבְשִׁלֹ֖הve.shi.LohH7887.Now Eliוְעֵלִ֣יve.'e.LiH5941the priestהַכֹּהֵ֗ןha.ko.HenH3548was sittingיֹשֵׁב֙yo.ShevH3427on the seatהַכִּסֵּ֔אha.ki.Se'H3678by the doorpostמְזוּזַ֖תme.zu.ZatH4201of thetempleהֵיכַ֥לhei.KhalH1964of the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.
11And shemadeוַתִּדֹּ֨רva.ti.DorH5087a vowנֶ֜דֶרNe.derH5088and saidוַתֹּאמַ֗רva.to.MarH559, “Lordיְהוָ֨הYah.wehH3068of armiesצְבָא֜וֹתtze.va.'otH6635,ifאִם־'im-H518You will indeedרָאֹ֥הra.'OhH7200lookתִרְאֶ֣ה׀tir.'EhH7200on the afflictionבָּעֳנִ֣יbo.'o.NiH6040of Your bond-servantאֲמָתֶ֗ךָ'a.ma.Te.khaH519and rememberוּזְכַרְתַּ֙נִי֙u.ze.khar.Ta.niH2142me, and not forgetתִשְׁכַּ֣חtish.KachH7911Your bond-servantאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ'a.ma.Te.khaH519,but will giveוְנָתַתָּ֥הve.na.ta.TahH5414Your bond-servantלַאֲמָתְךָ֖la.'a.ma.te.KhaH519asonזֶ֣רַעZe.ra'H2233H376,then I will giveוּנְתַתִּ֤יוu.ne.ta.TivH5414him to the Lordלַֽיהוָה֙la.Yah.wehH3068allכָּל־kol-H3605the daysיְמֵ֣יye.MeiH3117of his lifeH2425, anda razorוּמוֹרָ֖הu.mo.RahH4177shall neverH3808comeיַעֲלֶ֥הya.'a.LehH5927on his headרֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ro.ShoH7218.”
13As for Hannahוְחַנָּ֗הve.cha.NahH2584,she was speakingמְדַבֶּ֣רֶתme.da.Be.retH1696in her heartלִבָּ֔הּli.BahH3820,onlyH7534her lipsשְׂפָתֶ֣יהָse.fa.Tei.haH8193were quiveringנָּע֔וֹתna.'otH5128,but her voiceוְקוֹלָ֖הּve.ko.LahH6963was not heardיִשָּׁמֵ֑עַyi.sha.Me.a'H8085.So Eliעֵלִ֖י'e.LiH5941thoughtוַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָvai.yach.she.Ve.haH2803that she was drunkלְשִׁכֹּרָֽה׃le.shi.ko.RahH7910.
15But Hannahחַנָּ֤הcha.NahH2584answeredוַתַּ֨עַןva.Ta.'anH6030and saidוַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙va.To.merH559, “NoH369,my lordאֲדֹנִ֔י'a.do.NiH113,I am a womanאִשָּׁ֤ה'i.ShahH802despairingקְשַׁת־ke.shat-H7186in spiritר֙וּחַ֙Ru.achH7307;I have drunkשָׁתִ֑יתִיsha.Ti.tiH8354neitherלֹ֣אlo'H3808wineוְיַ֥יִןve.Ya.yinH3196norלֹ֣אlo'H3808strongוְשֵׁכָ֖רve.she.KharH7941drinkH7941, but Ihave pouredוָאֶשְׁפֹּ֥ךְva.'esh.PokhH8210outH8210my soulנַפְשִׁ֖יnaf.ShiH5315beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.
16Do notconsiderתִּתֵּן֙ti.TenH5414your bond-servantאֲמָ֣תְךָ֔'a.Ma.te.khaH519a uselessבְּלִיָּ֑עַלbe.li.Ya.'alH1100womanבַּת־bat-H1323,for I have spokenדִּבַּ֥רְתִּיdi.Bar.tiH1696untilעַד־'ad-H5704nowהֵֽנָּה׃He.nahH2008out of my greatמֵרֹ֥בme.RoH7230concernשִׂיחִ֛יsi.ChiH7879and provocationוְכַעְסִ֖יve.kha'.SiH3708.”
17Then Eliעֵלִ֛י'e.LiH5941answeredוַיַּ֧עַןvai.Ya.'anH6030and saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Goלְכִ֣יle.KhiH1980in peaceלְשָׁל֑וֹםle.sha.LomH7965;and may the Godוֵאלֹהֵ֣יve.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478grantיִתֵּן֙yi.TenH5414your requestשֵׁ֣לָתֵ֔ךְshe.la.TekhH7596that you have askedשָׁאַ֖לְתְּsha.'AltH7592of Him.”
18She saidוַתֹּ֕אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Let your bond-servantשִׁפְחָתְךָ֛shif.cha.te.KhaH8198findתִּמְצָ֧אtim.Tza'H4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580in your sightבְּעֵינֶ֑יךָbe.'ei.Nei.khaH5869.”So the womanהָאִשָּׁ֤הha.'i.ShahH802wentוַתֵּ֨לֶךְva.Te.lekhH1980on her wayלְדַרְכָּהּ֙le.dar.KahH1870and ateוַתֹּאכַ֔לva.to.KhalH398, andher faceוּפָנֶ֥יהָu.fa.Nei.haH6440was noלֹא־lo'-H3808longerעֽוֹד׃odH5750sad.
Samuel Is Born to Hannah
19Then they gotH7925upH7925earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּvai.yash.Ki.muH7925in the morningבַבֹּ֗קֶרva.Bo.kerH1242and worshipedH2331beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,and returnedוַיָּשֻׁ֛בוּ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּvai.ya.Shu.vu vai.ya.Vo.'uH7725H935againH7725to their houseבֵּיתָ֖םbei.TamH1004inRamahהָרָמָ֑תָהha.ra.Ma.tahH7414.And Elkanahאֶלְקָנָה֙'el.ka.NahH511hadH3045relationsH3045with Hannahחַנָּ֣הcha.NahH2584his wifeאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ'ish.ToH802, andthe Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068rememberedוַיִּֽזְכְּרֶ֖הָvai.yiz.ke.Re.haH2142her.
20It cameH1961aboutH1961in dueלִתְקֻפ֣וֹתlit.ku.FotH8622timeהַיָּמִ֔יםhai.ya.MimH3117,after Hannahחַנָּ֖הcha.NahH2584had conceivedוַתַּ֥הַרva.Ta.harH2029,that she gaveH3205birthH3205to a sonבֵּ֑ןBenH1121;and she namedוַתִּקְרָ֤א שְׁמוֹ֙va.tik.Ra' she.MoH7121H8034him Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֔לshe.mu.'ElH8050, saying, “Becauseכִּ֥יkiH3588I have askedשְׁאִלְתִּֽיו׃she.'il.TivH7592for him of the Lordמֵיְהוָ֖הme.Yah.wehH3068.”
21Then the manהָאִ֥ישׁha.'IshH376Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֖ה'el.ka.NahH511wentH5927upH5927with allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605his householdבֵּית֑וֹbei.ToH1004to offerלִזְבֹּ֧חַliz.Bo.achH2076to the Lordלַֽיהוָ֛הla.Yah.wehH3068the yearlyהַיָּמִ֖יםhai.ya.MimH3117sacrificeזֶ֥בַחZe.vachH2077and to payhis vowנִדְרֽוֹ׃nid.RoH5088.
22But Hannahוְחַנָּ֖הve.cha.NahH2584did not goH5927upH5927,for she saidאָמְרָ֣ה'a.me.RahH559to her husbandלְאִישָׁ֗הּle.'i.ShahH376, “I will not gountilH5704the childהַנַּ֙עַר֙ha.Na.'arH5288is weanedיִגָּמֵ֤לyi.ga.MelH1580; then I willbringוַהֲבִאֹתִ֗יוva.ha.vi.'o.TivH935him, so that he may appearוְנִרְאָה֙ve.nir.'AhH7200beforeפְּנֵ֣יpe.NeiH6440the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068andstayוְיָ֥שַׁבve.Ya.shavH3427thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033for lifeעוֹלָֽם׃o.LamH5769.”
23Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֨ה'el.ka.NahH511her husbandאִישָׁ֜הּ'i.ShahH376saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to her, “Doעֲשִׂ֧י'a.SiH6213whatH2896seems bestH2896to you. Stayשְׁבִי֙she.ViH3427untilעַד־'ad-H5704you have weanedגָּמְלֵ֣ךְga.me.LekhH1580him; onlyאַ֛ךְ'akhH389may the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068confirmיָקֵ֥םya.KemH6965His wordדְּבָר֑וֹde.va.RoH1697.”So the womanהָֽאִשָּׁה֙ha.'i.ShahH802stayedוַתֵּ֤שֶׁבva.Te.shevH3427and nursedוַתֵּ֣ינֶקva.Tei.nekH3243her sonבְּנָ֔הּbe.NahH1121untilעַד־'ad-H5704she weanedגָּמְלָ֖הּga.me.LahH1580him.
24Now whenH3512she had weanedגְּמָלַ֗תּוּge.ma.La.tuH1580him,she tookH5927him upH5927with her, with a three-year-oldשְׁלֹשָׁה֙she.lo.ShahH7969bullבְּפָרִ֤יםbe.fa.RimH6499,oneאַחַ֥ת'a.ChatH259ephahוְאֵיפָ֨הve.'ei.FahH374of flourקֶ֙מַח֙ke.machH7058,and a jugוְנֵ֣בֶלve.Ne.velH5035of wineיַ֔יִןYa.yinH3196,and broughtוַתְּבִאֵ֥הוּva.te.vi.'E.huH935him tothe houseבֵית־veit-H1004of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068in Shilohשִׁל֑וֹshi.LoH7887,although the childוְהַנַּ֖עַרve.ha.Na.'arH5288was youngנָֽעַר׃Na.'arH5288.
26And she saidוַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙va.To.merH559, “Pardonבִּ֣יbiH994me, my lordאֲדֹנִ֔י'a.do.NiH113!As your soulנַפְשְׁךָ֖naf.she.KhaH5315livesחֵ֥יcheiH2416,my lordאֲדֹנִ֑י'a.do.NiH113,I am the womanהָאִשָּׁ֗הha.'i.ShahH802who stoodהַנִּצֶּ֤בֶתha.ni.Tze.vetH5324hereבָּזֶ֔הba.ZehH2088besideעִמְּכָה֙'i.me.KhahH5973you, prayingלְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖לle.hit.pa.LelH6419to the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.
28So I have alsoוְגַ֣םve.GamH1571dedicatedהִשְׁאִלְתִּ֙הוּ֙hish.'il.Ti.huH7592him to the Lordלַֽיהוָ֔הla.Yah.wehH3068;asH3605H3117longH3605H3117as he livesהָיָ֔הha.YahH1961he isdedicatedשָׁא֖וּלsha.'UlH7592to the Lordלַֽיהוָ֑הla.Yah.wehH3068.” Andhe worshipedH2331the Lordלַיהוָֽה׃ פla.Yah.wehH3068thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033.
