Jesus and Zacchaeus
(Numbers 5:5–10)
1ThenG2532 Jesus enteredG1525 JerichoG2410 and was passing throughG1330. 2AndG2532 there was a manG435 namedG3686G2564 ZacchaeusG2195, a chief tax collectorG754, who was very wealthyG4145. 3He was tryingG2212 to seeG3708 whoG5101 JesusG2424 wasG1510, butG2532 could notG3756G1410 see overG575 theG3588 crowdG3793 becauseG3754 he wasG1510 smallG3398 in statureG2244. 4SoG2532 he ranG4390 onG1519 aheadG1715 and climbedG305G1909 a sycamore treeG4809 toG2443 seeG3708 HimG846, sinceG3754 Jesus was aboutG3195 to passG1330 thatG1565 way.
5WhenG2532G5613 Jesus cameG2064 toG1909 thatG3588 placeG5117, He looked upG308 and saidG2036G4314G846, “ZacchaeusG2195, hurryG4692 downG2597, forG1063 IG1473 mustG1163 stayG3306 atG1722 yourG4771 houseG3624 todayG4594.”
6SoG2532 Zacchaeus hurriedG4692 downG2597 andG2532 welcomedG5264 HimG846 joyfullyG5463. 7AndG2532 allG3956 who sawG3708 this began to grumbleG1234, sayingG3004, “He has goneG1525 to be the guestG2647 ofG3844 a sinfulG268 manG435!”
8ButG1161 ZacchaeusG2195 stood upG2476 and saidG2036 toG4314 theG3588 LordG2962, “LookG2400, LordG2962, halfG2255 ofG3588 myG1473 possessionsG5225 I giveG1325 to theG3588 poorG4434, andG2532 ifG1487 I have cheatedG4811 anyoneG5100, I will repayG591 it fourfoldG5073.”
JesusG2424 saidG2036 toG4314 himG846, “TodayG4594 salvationG4991 has comeG1096 to thisG3778 houseG3624, becauseG2530 this man tooG2532 isG1510 a sonG5207 of AbrahamG11. 10ForG1063 theG3588 SonG5207 of ManG444 cameG2064 to seekG2212 andG2532 to saveG4982 theG3588 lostG622.”
The Parable of the Ten Minas
(Matthew 25:14–30)
11WhileG1161 the people were listening toG191 this, Jesus proceededG4369 to tellG2036 them a parableG3850, becauseG1223 HeG846 wasG1510 nearG1451 JerusalemG2419 andG2532 theyG846 thoughtG1380 theG3588 kingdomG932 of GodG2316 wouldG3195 appearG398 imminentlyG3916. 12SoG3767 He saidG2036, “AG5100 manG444 of noble birthG2104 wentG4198 toG1519 a distantG3112 countryG5561 to lay claimG2983 to hisG1438 kingshipG932 and thenG2532 returnG5290. 13BeforehandG1161, he calledG2564 tenG1176 of hisG1438 servantsG1401 and gaveG1325 themG846 tenG1176 minasG3414.1 ‘Conduct businessG4231 with this untilG1722 I returnG2064,’ he saidG2036.
14ButG1161 hisG846 subjectsG4177 hatedG3404 himG846 andG2532 sentG649 a delegationG4242 afterG3694 himG846 to sayG3004, ‘We do not wantG3756G2309 thisG3778 man to ruleG936 overG1909 usG1473.’
15WhenG2532G1096G1722 heG846 returnedG1880 from procuringG2983 his kingshipG932, he summonedG2036G5455G846 the servantsG1401 to whomG3739 he had givenG1325 theG3588 moneyG694, toG2443 find outG1097 whatG5101 each oneG5101 had earnedG1281.
TheG3588 firstG4413 servant came forwardG3854 and saidG3004, ‘MasterG2962, yourG4771 minaG3414 has producedG4333 tenG1176 more minasG3414.’
His master repliedG2036G846, ‘Well doneG2095, goodG18 servantG1401! BecauseG3754 you have beenG1096 faithfulG4103 inG1722 a very small matterG1646, youG1510 shall haveG2192 authorityG1849 overG1883 tenG1176 citiesG4172.’
TheG3588 secondG1208 servant cameG2064 and saidG3004, ‘MasterG2962, yourG4771 minaG3414 has madeG4160 fiveG4002 minasG3414.’
19AndG1161G2532 to this oneG3778 he saidG2036, ‘YouG4771 shallG1096 have authority overG1883 fiveG4002 citiesG4172.’
20ThenG2532 anotherG2087 servant cameG2064 and saidG3004, ‘MasterG2962, here isG2400 yourG4771 minaG3414, whichG3739 I have laid awayG2192G606 inG1722 a piece of clothG4676.2 21ForG1063 I was afraid ofG5399 youG4771, becauseG3754 you areG1510 a harshG840 manG444. You withdrawG142 whatG3739 you did not depositG3756G5087 andG2532 reapG2325 whatG3739 you did not sowG3756G4687.’
22His master repliedG3004G846, ‘You wickedG4190 servantG1401, I will judgeG2919 youG4771 byG1537 yourG4771 own words. So you knewG1492 thatG3754 IG1473 amG1510 a harshG840 manG444, withdrawingG142 whatG3739 I did not depositG3756G5087 andG2532 reapingG2325 whatG3739 I did not sowG3756G4687? 23WhyG1223G5101 thenG2532 did you not depositG3756G1325 myG1473 moneyG694 inG1909 the bankG5132, andG2504 upon my returnG2064G302 I could have collectedG4238 itG846 withG4862 interestG5110?’
24ThenG2532 he toldG2036 thoseG3588 standing byG3936, ‘TakeG142 theG3588 minaG3414 fromG575 himG846 andG2532 giveG1325 it to theG3588 one who hasG2192 tenG1176 minasG3414.’
25‘MasterG2962,’ they saidG2036, ‘he already hasG2192 tenG1176!’
26He replied, ‘I tellG3004 youG4771 thatG3754 everyoneG3956 whoG3588 hasG2192 will be givenG1325 more; butG1161 theG3588 one who does notG3361 haveG2192, evenG2532 whatG3739 he hasG2192 will be taken awayG142 fromG575 him. 27AndG4133 theseG3778 enemiesG2190 of mineG1473 whoG3588 were unwillingG3361G2309 for meG1473 to ruleG936 overG1909 themG846, bringG71 them hereG5602 andG2532 slayG2695 themG846 in front ofG1715 meG1473.’”
The Triumphal Entry
(Zechariah 9:9–13; Matthew 21:1–11; Mark 11:1–11; John 12:12–19)
28AfterG2532 Jesus had saidG2036 thisG3778, He went onG4198 aheadG1715, going upG305 toG1519 JerusalemG2414.
AsG1096G5613 He approachedG1448G1519 BethphageG967 andG2532 BethanyG963 atG4314 theG3588 MountG3735 ofG2564 OlivesG1636, He sent outG649 twoG1417 ofG3588 His disciplesG3101, 30sayingG3004, “GoG5217 intoG1519 theG3588 villageG2968 aheadG2713 of you, and as you enterG1722G3739G1531 it, you will findG2147 a coltG4454 tiedG1210 there, onG1909 whichG3739 no oneG3762G444 has everG4455 satG2523. UntieG3089 itG846 and bringG71 it here. 31IfG1437 anyoneG5100 asksG2065, ‘WhyG1223G5101 are you untyingG3089 it?’ tellG2046 him, ‘TheG3588 LordG2962 needsG2192G5532 itG846.’”
32SoG1161 thoseG3588 who were sentG649 went outG565 and foundG2147 it just asG2531 Jesus had toldG2036 themG846. 33AsG1161 theyG846 were untyingG3089 theG3588 coltG4454, itsG846 ownersG2962 askedG2036, “WhyG5101 are you untyingG3089 theG3588 coltG4454?”
“TheG3588 LordG2962 needsG2192G5532 itG846,” they answeredG2036. 35ThenG2532 they ledG71 the colt toG4314 JesusG2424, threwG1977 theirG846 cloaksG2440 overG1909 it, and put Jesus onG1913G3588G2424 it.
As HeG846 rode alongG4198, the people spreadG5291 theirG1438 cloaksG2440 onG1722 theG3588 roadG3598. 37AndG1161 as HeG846 approachedG1448G2235 theG3588 descentG2600 from theG3588 MountG3735 of OlivesG1636, theG3588 wholeG537 multitudeG4128 ofG3588 disciplesG3101 beganG756 to praiseG134 GodG2316 joyfullyG5463 in a loud voiceG3173G5456 forG4012 allG3956 the miraclesG1411 they had seenG3708:
39ButG2532 someG5100 of theG3588 PhariseesG5330 inG575 theG3588 crowdG3793 saidG2036 toG4314 HimG846, “TeacherG1320, rebukeG2008 YourG4771 disciplesG3101!”
40“I tellG3004 youG4771,” He answeredG611G2036, “ifG1437 theyG3778 remain silentG4623, the veryG3588 stonesG3037 will cry outG2896.”
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
(Isaiah 29:1–16)
AsG5613 Jesus approachedG1448 Jerusalem and sawG3708 theG3588 cityG4172, He weptG2799 overG1909 itG846 42and saidG3004, “If onlyG1487 you had knownG1097 onG1722 thisG3778 dayG2250 whatG3588 would bring youG4771 peaceG1515! ButG1161 nowG3568 it is hiddenG2928 fromG575 yourG4771 eyesG3788. 43ForG3754 the daysG2250 will comeG2240 uponG1909 youG4771 when yourG4771 enemiesG2190 will barricadeG3925G5482 youG4771 andG2532 surroundG4033 youG4771 andG2532 hem you inG4912G4771 on every sideG3840. 44They will level you to the groundG1474—youG4771 andG2532 the childrenG5043 withinG1722 yourG4771 walls. They will not leaveG3756G863 one stoneG3037 onG1909 another, becauseG473G3739 you did not recognizeG3756G1097 theG3588 timeG2540 of yourG4771 visitationG1984 from God.5”
Jesus Cleanses the Temple
(Matthew 21:12–17; Mark 11:15–19; John 2:12–25)
45ThenG2532 Jesus enteredG1525G1519 theG3588 templeG2411 courts6 and beganG756 to drive outG1544 those whoG3588 were sellingG4453 there. 46He declaredG3004 to themG846, “It is writtenG1125: ‘MyG1473 houseG3624 will beG1510 a houseG3624 of prayerG4335.’7 ButG1161 youG4771 have madeG4160 itG846 ‘a denG4693 of robbersG3027.’8”
Jesus wasG1510 teachingG1321 atG1722 theG3588 templeG2411 everyG2596 dayG3588G2250, butG1161 theG3588 chief priestsG749, scribesG1122, andG2532 leadersG4413 of theG3588 peopleG2992 were intentG2212 on killingG622 HimG846. 48YetG2532 they could not findG3756G2147 a wayG5101 to doG4160 so, becauseG1063 allG537 theG3588 peopleG2992 hungG1582 on His wordsG846G191.
