Jesus before Pilate

(Matthew 27:11–14; John 18:28–40)

1ThenG2532 theG3588 wholeG537 councilG4128G846 roseG450 and ledG71 Jesus awayG846 toG1909 PilateG4091. 2AndG1161 they beganG756 to accuseG2723 HimG846, sayingG3004, “We foundG2147 thisG3778 man subvertingG1294 ourG1473 nationG1484, forbiddingG2967 payment of taxesG5411G1325 to CaesarG2541, andG2532 proclaimingG3004 HimselfG1438 to beG1510 ChristG5547, a KingG935.”

3SoG1161 PilateG4091 askedG2065 HimG846, “AreG1510 YouG4771 theG3588 KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453?”

“YouG4771 have saidG3004 so,” Jesus repliedG611.

4ThenG1161 PilateG4091 saidG2036 toG4314 theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG2532 theG3588 crowdsG3793, “I findG2147 noG3762 basis for a chargeG159 againstG1722 thisG3778 manG444.”

5ButG1161 they kept insistingG2001G3004, “He stirs upG383 theG3588 peopleG2992 allG3650 overG2596 JudeaG2449 with His teachingG1321. He beganG756 inG575 GalileeG1056 and has come all the wayG2193 hereG5602.”

Jesus before Herod

6WhenG1161 PilateG4091 heardG191 this, he askedG1905 ifG1487 theG3588 manG444 wasG1510 a GalileanG1057. 7AndG2532 learningG1921 thatG3754 Jesus wasG1510 underG1537 Herod’sG2264 jurisdictionG1849, he sent HimG375G846 toG4314 HerodG2264, who himselfG846G2532 wasG1510 inG1722 JerusalemG2414 atG1722 thatG3778 timeG2250.

8WhenG1161 HerodG2264 sawG3708 JesusG2424, he wasG1510 greatlyG3029 pleasedG5463. He had wantedG2309 to seeG3708 HimG846 forG1537 a longG2425 timeG5550, becauseG1223 he had heardG191 aboutG4012 HimG846 andG2532 was hopingG1679 to seeG3708 HimG846 performG1096 aG5100 miracleG4592. 9Herod questionedG1905 Jesus atG1722 greatG2425 length, butG1161 HeG846 gave no answerG611G846G3762.

10MeanwhileG1161, theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG2532 scribesG1122 stood thereG2476, vehementlyG2159 accusingG2723 HimG846. 11AndG1161 evenG2532 HerodG2264 andG4862 hisG846 soldiersG4753 ridiculedG1848G846 andG2532 mockedG1702 Him. Dressing Him inG4016 a fineG2986 robeG2066, they sent Him backG375G846 toG3588 PilateG4091.

12ThatG1722G3588G846 dayG2250 HerodG2264 andG2532 PilateG4091 becameG1096 friendsG5384; before thisG4391 time they had beenG1510 enemiesG1722G2189G4314G848.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

(Matthew 27:15–23; Mark 15:6–11)

13ThenG1161 PilateG4091 called togetherG4779 theG3588 chief priestsG749, theG3588 rulersG758, andG2532 theG3588 peopleG2992, 14and saidG2036 toG4314 themG846, “You broughtG4374 meG1473 thisG3778 manG444 asG5613 one who was incitingG654 theG3588 people to rebellionG2992. IG1473 have examinedG350 Him hereG2400 in your presenceG1799G4771 and foundG2147 Him notG3762 guiltyG159 ofG3739 your chargesG2723 againstG2596 HimG846. 15NeitherG3761 has HerodG2264, forG1063 he sent Him backG375G846 toG4314 usG1473. As you can seeG2400, HeG846 hasG1510 doneG4238 nothingG3762 deservingG514 of deathG2288. 16ThereforeG3767 I will punishG3811 HimG846 and releaseG630 Him.”1

18ButG1161 they all cried outG349 in unisonG3826G3004: “Away withG142 thisG3778 man! ReleaseG630 BarabbasG912 to usG1473!” 19(Barabbas had been imprisonedG906G1722G3588G5438 forG1223 anG5100 insurrectionG4714 inG1722 theG3588 cityG4172, andG2532 for murderG5408.)

20

WantingG2309 to releaseG630 JesusG2424, PilateG4091 addressedG4377 themG846 againG3825, 21butG1161 they kept shoutingG2019G3004, “CrucifyG4717 Him! CrucifyG4717 HimG846!”

22

A thirdG5154 time he saidG2036 toG4314 themG846, “WhatG5101 evilG2556 has thisG3778 man doneG4160? I have foundG2147 inG1722 HimG846 noG3762 offense worthyG159 of deathG2288. SoG3767 after I punishG3811 HimG846, I will releaseG630 Him.”

23ButG1161 they were insistentG1945, demandingG154 with loud voicesG5456G3173 forG846 Jesus to be crucifiedG4717. AndG2532 theirG846 clamorG54562 prevailedG2729. 24SoG2532 PilateG4091 sentencedG1948 that theirG846 demandG155 be metG1096. 25AsG1161 they had requestedG154, he releasedG630 theG3588 one imprisonedG906G1519G5438 forG1223 insurrectionG4714 andG2532 murderG5408, andG1161 he handedG3860 JesusG2424 over toG3588 theirG846 willG2307.

26

The Crucifixion

(Psalm 22:1–31; Matthew 27:32–44; Mark 15:21–32; John 19:16–27)

AsG5613 the soldiers led Him awayG520G846, they seizedG1949 SimonG4613 of CyreneG2956 on his way inG2064 fromG575 the countryG68, and they putG2007 theG3588 crossG4716 on himG846 to carryG5342 behindG3693 JesusG2424.

27

A greatG4183 numberG4128 of peopleG2992 followedG190 HimG846, includingG2532 womenG1135 whoG3739 kept mourningG2875 andG2532 wailingG2354 for HimG846. 28ButG1161 JesusG2424 turnedG4762 toG4314 themG846 and saidG2036, “DaughtersG2364 of JerusalemG2419, do notG3361 weepG2799 forG1909 MeG1473, butG4133 weepG2799 forG1909 yourselvesG1438 andG2532 forG1909 yourG4771 childrenG5043. 29LookG2400, the daysG2250 are comingG2064 whenG1722G3739 people will sayG2046, ‘BlessedG3107 are theG3588 barrenG4723 women, theG3588 wombsG2836 thatG3739 neverG3756 boreG1080, andG2532 breastsG3149 thatG3739 neverG3756 nursedG5142!’ 30At that timeG5119

‘they will sayG756G3004 to theG3588 mountainsG3735, “FallG4098 onG1909 usG1473!”andG2532 to theG3588 hillsG1015, “CoverG2572 usG1473!”’3

31ForG3754 ifG1487 men doG4160 these thingsG3778 while theG3588 treeG3586 is greenG5200, whatG5101 will happenG1096 when it is dryG3584?”

32

TwoG1417 othersG2087, who were criminalsG2557, were also led awayG2532G71 to be executedG337 withG4862 Jesus.

33

WhenG3753 they cameG2064 toG1909 theG3588 placeG5117 calledG2564 The SkullG2898,4 they crucifiedG4717 HimG846 thereG1563, along withG2532 theG3588 criminalsG2557, oneG3739 onG1537 His rightG1188 andG1161 the other onG1537 His leftG710.

34ThenG1161 JesusG2424 saidG2036, “FatherG3962, forgiveG863 themG846, forG1063 they do not knowG3756G1492 whatG5101 they are doingG4160.”5 AndG1161 they divided upG1266 HisG846 garmentsG2440 by castingG906 lotsG2819.6

35

TheG3588 peopleG2992 stoodG2476 watchingG2334, andG1161 theG3588 rulersG758 sneered atG1592 Him,7 sayingG3004, “He savedG4982 othersG243; let Him saveG4982 HimselfG1438 ifG1487 He isG1510 theG3588 ChristG5547 of GodG2316, theG3588 ChosenG1588 One.”

36

TheG3588 soldiersG4757 alsoG2532 mockedG1702 HimG846 and came upG4334 to offerG4374 HimG846 sour wineG3690.8 37“IfG1487 YouG4771 areG1510 theG3588 KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453,” they saidG3004, “saveG4982 YourselfG4572!”

38

AboveG1909 HimG846 wasG1510 posted an inscriptionG1923:9

THISG3778 IS THEG3588 KINGG935 OF THEG3588 JEWSG2453.

39

OneG1520 of theG3588 criminalsG2557 who hungG2910 there heaped abuse onG987 HimG846. “Are YouG1510G4771 notG3780 theG3588 ChristG5547?” he saidG3004. “SaveG4982 YourselfG4572 andG2532 usG1473!”

40ButG1161 theG3588 otherG2087 one rebukedG611G2008 himG846, sayingG5346, “Do youG4771 not evenG3761 fearG5399 GodG2316, sinceG3754 you areG1510 underG1722 theG3588 sameG846 judgmentG2917? 41WeG1473 are punished justlyG1346, forG1063 we are receivingG618 whatG3739 our actionsG4238 deserveG514. ButG1161 this manG3778 has doneG4238 nothingG3762 wrongG824.” 42ThenG2532 he saidG2036, “JesusG2424, rememberG3403 meG147310 whenG3752 You comeG2064 intoG1519 YourG4771 kingdomG932!”

43AndG2532 Jesus saidG2036 to himG846, “TrulyG281 I tellG3004 youG4771, todayG4594 you will beG1510 withG3326 MeG1473 inG1722 ParadiseG3857.”

The Death of Jesus

(Psalm 31:1–24; Matthew 27:45–56; Mark 15:33–41; John 19:28–30)

It was nowG2235G1510 aboutG5616 the sixthG1623 hourG5610, andG2532 darknessG4655 cameG1096 overG1909 allG3650 theG3588 landG1093 untilG2193 the ninthG1766 hourG5610.11 45TheG3588 sunG2246 was darkenedG1587,12 andG1161 theG3588 veilG2665 of theG3588 templeG3485 was tornG4977 down the middleG3319.

46ThenG2532 JesusG2424 called outG5455 in a loud voiceG3173G5456G2036, “FatherG3962, intoG1519 YourG4771 handsG5495 I commitG3908 MyG1473 SpiritG4151.”13 And whenG1161 He had saidG2036 thisG3778, He breathed His lastG1606.

47WhenG1161 theG3588 centurionG1543 sawG3708 whatG3588 had happenedG1096, he gave gloryG1392 to GodG2316, sayingG3004, “SurelyG3689 thisG3778 wasG1510 a righteousG1342 manG444.14” 48AndG2532 when allG3956 theG3588 peopleG3793 who had gatheredG4836 forG1909 thisG3778 spectacleG2335 sawG2334 whatG3588 had happenedG1096, they returnedG5290 home beatingG5180 their breastsG4738. 49ButG1161 allG3956G575 those whoG3588 knewG1110 Jesus, includingG2532 the womenG1135 whoG3588 had followedG4870 HimG846 fromG575 GalileeG1056, stoodG2476 at a distanceG3113 watchingG3708 these thingsG3778.

The Burial of Jesus

(Isaiah 53:9–12; Matthew 27:57–61; Mark 15:42–47; John 19:38–42)

50NowG2532 there was a Council memberG435G5225G2532G1010 namedG3686 JosephG2501, a goodG18 andG2532 righteousG1342 manG435, 51who had not consentedG1510G3756G4784 toG3588 theirG846 decisionG1012 or actionG4234. He was fromG575 the Judean townG4172G3588G2453 of ArimatheaG707 and was waiting forG4327 theG3588 kingdomG932 of GodG2316. 52HeG3778 wentG4334 to PilateG4091 to askG154 for theG3588 bodyG4983 of JesusG2424. 53ThenG2532 he took it downG2507, wrappedG1794 itG846 in a linen clothG4616, andG2532 placedG5087 itG846 inG1722 a tombG3418 cut into the rockG2991, whereG3739 no oneG3762G3756 had yetG3768G1510 been laidG2749. 54It wasG1510 PreparationG3904 DayG2250, andG2532 the SabbathG4521 was beginningG2020.15

55

TheG3588 womenG1135 whoG3748 had come withG1510G4905 Jesus fromG1537 GalileeG1056 followedG2628, and they sawG2300 theG3588 tombG3419 andG2532 howG5613 HisG846 bodyG4983 was placedG5087. 56ThenG1161 they returnedG5290 to prepareG2090 spicesG759 andG2532 perfumesG3464. AndG2532 they restedG2270 on theG3588 SabbathG4521, according toG2596 theG3588 commandmentG1785.
